The rulers of the city state of Lagash in southern #Mesopotamia, located about 270 km southeast of Baghdad, were among the first who left official inscriptions during the 3rd millennium BCE. The city state of Lagash consisted of three important sites: Lagash (modern al-Hiba) and Nigin/Nina (Surghul) in the southern part of the city state and the important religious center Girsu (Tello) in the north. Majority of texts come from the latter. Directly adjacent to the northwest lies the city state of Umma. The site of Umma was heavily looted in the past and official inscriptions left by their rulers are comparatively scarce for the mid-third millennium BCE. Therefore, we are best informed through the inscriptions from Lagash, even though they are skewed towards portraying the Lagashite rulers in a positive light. The important historical inscription in the image was inscribed on this and a few other objects. The object is usually interpreted as a vase. The text starts with a historical introduction, according to which the highest god in the #Sumerian pantheon, Enlil, decided on the boundary between the two city states. Then it relays a series of conflicts. The ruler of Umma violated the boundary, before the ruler of Lagash defeated him and re-established the boundary, adding a no-man’s land. The ruler of Umma took a loan on barley that belonged to Lagash, but was unable to pay back the impossible compound interest. Clearly visible on the vase are four deep round depressions with smaller depressions inside (see the second image), which represent an interest of 8,640,000 gur of barley (1 gur = c. 80 US gallons). The ruler of Umma ravaged through the border region and crossed the boundary, but the next ruler of Lagash, Enmetena, the protagonist of this text, defeated him too. Unfortunately, we only learn of all these events from the side of Lagash. Maybe one day inscriptions will come to light that will detail Umma's perspective. Igi—il2 𒅆𒅍 = to look at (raise the eye) Teš-bi 𒌨𒁉= all Together Hur-sağ 𒄯𒊕= Mountain Dağal 𒂼 = wide/broad Sig/si-ig 𒋛𒅅 = to put onto/to drive into Nam 𒉆 = modifies the verb Breakdown: First sentence we have "Kur Gu2-bi2-na-ce3" which literally means to the mountain of Gubin. Igi—il2 is a compound verb meaning to raise the eye or lift the gaze. The chain in the middle is being used to highlight the verb being transitive and the 3rd person animate marker (Enlil). This would mean "He lifted his Gaze to the mountains of Gubin". Next up, We have a noun and an adjective "hursağ Dağal" which literally means "Wide Mountain". Then we have the phrase Teš2-bi which means "All together". Now here is the tricky bit "Nam-ta-an-si-ig" The verbal base here si-ig is a form of "Sig" which I believe here means "to put or place upon/pile up or to drive into". Nam is being used to modify the verb, which in this context we can denote the use is going from "to place upon" to "descent/descend." In addition to this, we also see the ablative prefix -ta (from somewhere) appear in the Verbal chain which can carry a nuanced meaning here, maybe confirming the verbs contextual meaning in this sentence "to come down from the mountains" this also co-oberates the translation conclusion I have made above. This use of the language for me creates imagery of the people from the mountains swarming and piling into Agade ferociously like some sort of ravenous horde of doom. So both lines together we have something like: "To the Gubin Mountains he (Enlil) lifted his gaze, All together (they from) the Broad mountains descended." ❤🙏

Ancient Mardin, was an important post on the Silk Road between the Euphrates and the Tigris rivers for trade goods from the far east to the west. Life here hasn’t changed a lot with donkeys doing the trash collection and an entire narrow street of trader shops with uniform shopfronts showing metal or textile workers working and selling their wares. The muezzins’ echoing call to prayer throughout the day gives off an almost haunting feeling. Aquí surgió la lengua sumeria, considerada como la lengua escrita más antigua del mundo. . Fue la capital del Reino de Babilonia, un estado ubicado en la antigua Mesopotamia, y aquí residieron personajes históricos como Hammurabi o Nabucodonosor II. . No se conserva nada de la Babilonia original, ya que fue destruida en su totalidad por los asirios. La reconstrucción actual es de época de Sadam Hussein y está basada en la ciudad de Nabucodonosor II (siglos VII y VI a.C.). . Algunos de los sitios de interés de Babilonia son: . - Puerta de Ishtar: era una de las puertas de la muralla y estaba dedicada a Ishtar, diosa de la fertilidad, el amor y la guerra. En la actualidad únicamente se conserva la estructura y una reconstrucción, ya que la puerta original está en el Museo de Pérgamo de Berlín. . - Jardines Colgantes: fueron una de las 7 Maravillas del Mundo Antiguo, aunque no se conservan en la actualidad. Se encontraban junto al Palacio del Rey y fueron construidos por iniciativa de Nabucodonosor II para su mujer Amitis. . - Palacio Real o Palacio de Nabucodonosor II, una ciudadela de planta rectangular formada por varios patios, un salón del trono, un harén y un laberinto, que se construyó para impedir que los invasores pudieran acceder al centro de la ciudad. . - León de Babilonia: es una escultura de 2600 años de antigüedad descubierta a finales del siglo XIX. Representa a un león mesopotámico sobre un humano tumbado en el suelo. . - Etemenanki: este zigurat era la bíblica Torre de Babel. “I saw the great mound of Brak for the first time on hot afternoon in November, 1934, when, together with my wife and Mr. Macartney, I was examining the ancient sites in the Khabur and Jagjagha valleys of northern Syria….’ So begins Max Mallowan’s account of his 1930s excavations of Tell Brak, written and published after he was released from service with the RAF in 1945. Among the many objects Mallowan found at Tell Brak were the small biscuit-shaped figures that he called ‘Eye Idols’, thousands of which he excavated from the foundations of a temple building, the so-called ‘Eye Temple’. These small figures show a rudimentary body and two large eyes. Some have markings, or double heads, others seem to be mother-and-child figures. All reduce the human form to the basic act of looking. Mallowan speculated that they were votive objects, prayer tokens to some great Eye Goddess. Whatever their intention, they are doubtlessly the first images of human consciousness and perception — the first images of looking. They stand at the beginning of the long history of images of human consciousness and spiritual aspiration. For me they are among the first truly religious images. I will be looking at these captivating objects in the next LIFE AND AFTERLIFE OF ART lecture, this Wednesday at 7.30 pm at the Printroom Studio, Sweffling, Suffolk IB172BU. 🇮🇶 EL GRAN ARCO DE CTESIFONTE El Taq Kasra (Iwan de Cosroes), es un hito en la historia de la arquitectura por ser un arco de 1.400 años de antigüedad, el más grande del mundo, y también conocido como el Arco de Ctesifonte, ya que es la única estructura visible que queda de la antigua ciudad de Ctesifonte, en el actual Irak, que fue, durante siete siglos, desde el siglo II a. C. hasta el siglo VII d. C., la capital principal de las dinastías sucesoras del Imperio Persa: partos y sasánidas. La construcción del arco comenzó en el año 540 d. C. durante las largas guerras de la dinastía persa sasánida con el Imperio Romano de Oriente y formaba parte de un conjunto palaciego iniciado tres siglos antes. La estructura que hoy queda es el pórtico principal de la sala de audiencias de los sasánidas. La sala arqueada del iwan, abierta en el lado de la fachada, tenía unos 37 metros de alto, 26 metros de ancho y 50 metros de largo, construida con ladrillos no reforzados fue la bóveda independiente más grande hecha por el hombre hasta los tiempos modernos.
