Dag 3 in London!☀️ Vanochtend zijn wij gestart in het Natural History Museum. Heel erg aan te raden! Wij waren er zeker een uurtje of 3, want er is zoveel te zien👍 Na de lunch besloten wij, met een heerlijk zonnetje, te gaan wandelen naar Buckingham Palace. Mijn richtingsgevoel is zo goed, dat we gewoon een extra rondje eraan vast geplakt hebben🙈 Ach ja, hebben we de mooie wijk Chelsea ook eens van dichtbij gezien (en nog een celebrity gespot ook!) Daarna toch echt onze stops gemaakt: Bucks Palace, St James Park (met een heleboel grijze eekhoorns, ganzen en kuikentjes😍), Big Ben en Parlement, Westminster Abbey & Cathedrale, Horse Guards (helaas waren ze al naar binnen) en London Eye. Daarna met de tube terug, één station eerder uitgestapt en héérlijk gegeten in een pub😋. En dat er weer afgewandeld, onderweg terug naar het hotel. Onze stappenteller maakt overuren deze vakantie, haha. Sia chiaro, non me la sentirei di suggerirvi di andare PIACENZA solo per vedere il suo MUSEO DI STORIA NATURALE, ma se ci dovete andare comunque vi consiglio di aggiungerlo alla lista di luoghi da vedere. Non perché contenga chissà quali collezioni (anzi, forse è un po' scarno), ma PER COME È FATTO. Ho visto vari musei di storia naturale ultimamente e spesso sono molto simili tra loro: fossili, animali, minerali, qualche video, un po' di simpatia per strizzare l'occhio ai bambini. Questo museo invece dà più spazio alle spiegazioni e al CONTESTO rispetto all'oggetto in sé, mostra i vari habitat, crea ambienti e spazi, per esempio mostra visivamente a quale profondità vivono i pesci. A me è piaciuto. Occhio che è aperto solo la mattina (d'estate forse gli orari cambiano?). Fantastica poi la collezione di MINERALI al piano superiore, collezione privata donata al museo. (Foto mie).
The details in historic dioramas are often overlooked and one component that certainly comes to mind are the plants. Many visitors do not realize some plants are models, let alone carefully hand constructed from simple materials such as cotton, paper and beeswax. However, lets start at the very beginning. These models are usually made with the aid of plaster molds made of the plants while in the field. An arduous task usually performed under very primitive conditions. Here we see R.C. ALAMOSAURUS SANJUANENSIS Alamosaurus (que significa "lagarto Ojo Alamo") é um gênero de dinossauros saurópodes titanossauros opisthocoelicaudiine contendo uma única espécie conhecida, Alamosaurus sanjuanensis , da era Maastrichtiana do Cretáceo Superior. período no que hoje é o sudoeste da América do Norte . Vértebras e ossos de membrosisolados indicam que ele atingiu tamanhos comparáveis ao Argentinosaurus e ao Puertasaurus , o que o tornaria o maior dinossauro conhecido da América do Norte. Seus fósseis foram recuperados de uma variedade de formações rochosas que abrangem a era Maastrichtiana. Espécimes de um Alamosaurus sanjuanensis juvenil foram recuperados apenas alguns metros abaixo da fronteira do Cretáceo-Paleógeno, no Texas, tornando-o uma das últimas espécies sobreviventes de dinossauros não-aviários. What would you do if you saw one of these tusks poking out of a river near you? 🤯 That has happened before - a stranded narwhal was found in the river Medway in Kent, soon before another was found in the Thames! Otherwise known as ‘unicorns of the sea’, narwhals are toothed whales that live primarily in Arctic Coastal waters. These mythic mammals have two teeth, but in most cases only one erupts as a spear-shaped canine. As you can see, there are exceptions to the rule- and sometimes, a second spiraling tusk may emerge. Narwals use their curious canines for a variety of reasons: 🌊 To detect changes to water temperature, salt content or pressure 💗 To attract females for mate-selection 🐟 To stun and spear their prey 💪 To intimidate each other during combat – many adults have the battle scars to prove it! The surface of their amazing tusks is covered in open pores leading to a central core full of thousands of exposed nerve endings and blood vessels. #WPY59’s Michael Eastwell pulled over on a busy road to rescue this eastern long-necked turtle, that had been trying to cross the road to reach water. 🐢 This turtle was the first of two Michael rescued that day. Usually, he would have stood guard while the animal crossed, but this time the danger was too great, and the turtle was obviously on its way to find water. He carried it to a lay-by, checked it for injuries and then released it on the dam side of the road, where it had been heading. On one side of the road was a dried-up riverbed and on the other was a dam trapping water. Turtles and other wildlife often cross busy roads looking for water when streams and rivers dry up in the summer. I visited Wollaton Hall on Saturday. It was nice to do this so close to our visit to another Elizabethan mansion, Hardwick Hall also designed by the same architect. We got to tour the upper rooms and go on the roof…. Amazing views! It’s full of natural history curiosities and I found a lovely embroidered sampler, featuring the building,stashed at the back of a display cabinet. There was a great exit bonus… the gardeners had been dividing the plants in the gardens around the camellia house and left a giant bag of unwanted heuchera plants for people to take home! Bothriechis nitidus, una especie que recientemente revalidada en un trabajo extensivo de descripción del complejo de víboras de pestañas que abarcaba la especie "Bothriechis schlegelii ". Sin dudas una de las especies más conspicuas de este género, una maravilla del chocó Ecuatoriano. Esta ilustración sale como complemento de el artículo científico publicado recientemente por @alejandroarteagath @khamai.bio @cr.wild @cesarbarrioamoros @abelbat. Originalmente descrita en 1859 como Lachesis nitidus por el naturalista anglo alemán Albert Günther dentro de las magníficas obras conocidas como Proceeding of the zoological society of London. Aquí como siempre le rindo un homenaje a la historia natural con este estilo de ilustración clásico pero actualizado que incluye esquemas de morfología hemipenial, escamación, representación general, y figuras de variación cromática, algo que característico y aún sin explicación evolutiva propio de este complejo único de víboras.
