First impressions : I was delighted by the light. The bright light of this country captivated me, enchanted me. The right match of colors, on clothes, houses, walls. Everything was beautifully disordered, but I could find this disorder, this mess in myself. So I could relate. It was not strange to me, it felt familiar. Phnom Penh, a city full of surprises. Our introduction? A peaceful 6-hour bus ride, winding through Cambodia's rice fields and lush countryside, setting the stage for the city's layered tales. Looking out from our hotel each morning, the palace grounds were awe-inspiring. My morning walks in the park were a relaxed scene – locals playing sepak takraw (kick volleyball), kids doing their thing, and just the overall vibe of city life easing into the day. The heaviness of our visits to the killing fields and S21 resonated deep within. The stories of survivors we met there? They'll stay with me forever. But the city also taught us to find balance. After reflecting on its past, we embraced its vibrant present. From the evening's rush of tuk-tuks to the thumping beats at the clubs to karaoke with locals, the energy was palpable. And for those post-club hunger pangs? A little hole-in-the-wall all-night restaurant nearby became our Cambodian Waffle House. Yet, amidst it all, there were pockets of peace. The Mekong River cruise and a dip in the rooftop pool, overlooking the entire city, offered peaceful escapes and opportunity to reflect. It's not just the big moments, but also the shared smiles, the surprise food stops, and the park's casual observations that make Phnom Penh so special. In Siem Reap, the landscape is dotted with numerous beauty salons, a testament to the Cambodian people's determination to create their livelihoods in a region where government support may be limited. Our meeting was followed by a delightful meal that not only tantalized our taste buds but also enriched our understanding of Cambodian culture and camaraderie. Then this Friday, the day dawned with renewed energy as I continued my quest to find a remedy for my persistent back issue. Another visit to the local shaman, who had become a significant part of my journey, filled me with both hope and apprehension. He applied a patch with healing ointments, instructing me to keep it for three days. Unlike traditional healing rituals, the shaman chose to employ a more Western-style bandage. The road to recovery is a winding one, but I remained steadfast, committed to my healing journey. Chiro to Phnom Penh after an amazing Homestay experience with Tida and her family. The house behind me is basically the same as what I stayed in last night. There’s no WiFi, no TV, none of the luxuries that we all take for granted. Tida sells marrows that she’s grown in her garden from a stall (more like a wood table with a parasol and hammock) she sets up on Road 308 to Kampong Cham. So Chiro is a new place for me to visit. I’ve passed through 2 or 3 times now on my way to Kampong Cham but never knew that there’s an NGO organisation within the village. OBT is a Homestay and English teaching project within a small area of the village where some of the money that you pay to stay goes towards schools in the village and to the families that provide a Homestay.
