🏯Shinda Shima (Danger Man, 1968) is the last episode of the series, and the second to be produced in colour. Directed by Peter Yates - who would soon go on to direct Steve McQueen police thriller Bullitt - it is connected to the events of the previous episode, Koroshi. (The two episodes were combined into a movie, with bridging material added.) In Shinda Shima, John Drake (Patrick McGoohan) goes undercover in a Bond-like adventure - similar territory to You Only Live Twice, though Danger Man was completed before its release - taking on the identity of a leading electronics security expert, Edward Sharp, who has suddenly resigned from the British Government’s Q department (Secret Operations) before flying to Tokyo. Kenneth Griffith, who would later appear in The Prisoner, plays an expat recluse, Richards. The Blofeld-like Controller is played by George Coulouris (who also turns up in The Prisoner - in Checkmate). Maxine Audley is the jigsaw enthusiast Drake encounters in the Two Tailed Dragon Bar. Yoko Tani plays Miho, who is out for revenge after her sister was murdered in Koroshi. Drake discovers that the same enemy network featured in Koroshi wants Sharp to break the United Nations’ top-secret UNI code. Koroshi and Shinda Shima (meaning the ‘murdered island’, where the Controller and his network are based) make great use of colour, though lack the complexity and ingenuity of earlier plots. 🇯🇵 Koroshi (Danger Man, 1968) is set in Tokyo where John Drake (Patrick McGoohan) has been sent to investigate the death of M9 contact Ako Nakamura. In a record store, Drake meets Cultural Attaché Potter (Christopher Benjamin) who refers to Drake as the ‘lone wolf from London’. A character called Potter, also played by Benjamin, appears as the shoeshine man in The Girl Who was Death, an episode of The Prisoner. Drake is undercover as Basil Edwards, a radio news reporter covering the Festival of Fragrance. Burt Kwouk plays embassy chauffeur Tanaka, while Amanda Barrie is postgraduate student Rosemary Riley. The penultimate episode of the series, Koroshi is first of two parts (and the first in colour). It features a six-minute Japanese Kabuki theatre version of Hamlet Act V. Drake is attacked in the Kabuki costume storeroom by a sword-wielding assailant. Ronald Howard plays Nigel Sanders, the villain of the piece. The director was Michael Truman. 🏴☠️ Not So Jolly Roger (Danger Man, April 1966) sees John Drake (Patrick McGoohan) go undercover as a disc jockey - Johnny Drake - at a pirate radio station, the Jolly Roger. It is suspected of somehow transmitting military secrets. With one M9 agent who had been undercover as a DJ at the Jolly Roger already disposed of, Drake has been sent out to complete the mission. Station manager Marco Janson is played by Edwin Richfield, while Lisa Daniely is his flirtatious wife, Linda. The drunken cook Corrigan (Wilf Lawson) and menacing captain’s ’mate’ Mullins (Andrew Faulds) are the other unhappy residents of the ironically named Jolly Roger. Patsy Ann Noble is bored DJ Suzie Wade. In real life, Noble had just released the single He Who Rides A Tiger, which features on the episode. We hear numerous other pop songs being broadcast over the airwaves. The title refers to John Drake’s quest as he follows the trail of stolen top-secret documents before they irretrievably vanish. Drake is in Rome helping old friend Gordon Symonds, First Secretary at the British Embassy - owner of the missing papers. Drake goes undercover as Troy Davidson during a poker marathon with Eddie Gelb (Kenneth J Warren), a bewigged, egotistical actor whose apartment has framed photographs of himself in exotic-looking roles. Peter Swanwick (later the Supervisor in The Prisoner) is a fellow poker player. Joan Greenwood is excellent as the seductive Nandina. John Drake (Patrick McGoohan) has been ordered to take a holiday after his cover is blown during an unsuccessful mission to capture an enemy agent, Solby (Hugh McDermott). Bernard Lee (M in the Bond movies) plays Drake’s M9 colleague Derringham, who has ventured into the field - and is glad to be getting back to his desk job after the botched Solby operation, during which Derringham was taken prisoner, until Drake’s arrival. Robert Urquhart plays Monckton, a fellow guest at the Spanish hotel where Drake is staying, and a Solby associate. A comic character, Monckton wrongly assumes Drake is on a mission in Banolas, setting in train a series of farcical events. Drake’s Spanish friend is Gomez (Paul Curran) and together with Maruja they go into the woods to ‘shoot’ wolves - in fact, they’re recording the creatures using rifles which have film reel in the butts. 📞 I’m Afraid You Have the Wrong Number (Danger Man, March 1966): John Drake (Patrick McGoohan) goes undercover as Mr Kenton, an insurance adjudicator for law firm Seymour & Hyatt, looking into the death of Mr Standfast - an M9 spymaster in Geneva. Drake must verify whether a man who died in a car crash is indeed Standfast - and whether he was betrayed by one of his own agents. The episode features a wonderful (but too brief) performance by Paul Eddington as Captain Schulman, head of the security branch of the Federal Police. Eddington went on to appear in the first episode of The Prisoner, Arrival (September 1967), playing Cobb, a former colleague of Number 6. There are plenty of gadgets in this Danger Man episode. Drake listens in to a bugged phone call via a transmitter which also records, disguised as a cigarette packet. The three agents suspected of betraying Standfast are Leontine (Guy Deghy), Aurel (John Cazabon), and Leanka (Jeanne Moody).
