This week was all those days of spirits and the dead and saints and those can seem spooky like shadows hanging over you. But as I get older I try to think of when I don’t remember the dead or the saints that have gone before us. It seems like their lives are the impetus to live my own. I find myself seeing my grandparents on old buildings in Seattle with Paul Bunyan stories! Daughter was asked to make some kind of representation of an altar for #diodelosmuertos for her Spanish class. Honoring someone who has passed. And they will write an accompanying paragraph about this person in Spanish. (Though only given one night. ;) to make said drawing…) only rule was it must contain at least five elements from traditional altars. Daisy chose to honor Robert Frost, as she loves poetry and his work. She turned it into a painting collage on a small canvas we had. She used a photo of Frost to do a drawing and painted the background in acrylics. She then painted marigolds. She did traditional paper cut outs and affixed them with good old #modgepodge. You can’t see the edges of the frame but there are small pictures of sugars skulls all around the border and more cut outs. She then used the glue to adhere salt at the four corners. Hoping it would look also a bit like snow, and referenced #stoppingbywoodsonasnowyevening in corners as well. She then found fragments from his poems that reference flowers, sweets, skulls, bread etc and placed it around. I love it!! #artlover #daughtersarethebest #becreativeeveryday #alwaysdoyourbest

And now, the tiniest mollusk I’ve ever seen. Collecting leaves for my @eldergrow class tomorrow and this little guy made its way inside on the haul. Such a tiny small, vulnerable little being is an unlikely reminder of the things that matter to me in this life. My grandfather has been heavy on my brain this week as we approach a year since losing him. It’s been a blur and I can’t believe how fast life goes. Stopping to be present and appreciate small things is a valuable lesson I’m trying to practice.

To celebrate Dio De Los Muertos, Señora Sanchez's and Señora Liot's San Jose Middle School Students worked together to create an Ofrenda (altar) to honor their loved ones who have passed away. 5th graders contributed Mariposas Monarcas (Monarch Butterflies) and cempasúchil (marigolds), 6th graders brought Calaveras (skulls) and Alebrijes (Mexican folk Art -colorful imaginary creatures), 7th graders made Calacas/Catrinas (skeletons), and 8th graders chose a person to honor and made frames for the altar, including papel picado, flowers, butterflies, and skulls. They also made their chosen person's favorite foods and drinks using clay.
