Greetings from Scarborough! I’m at the beach in an oversized furry coat and shades. It’s nippy to say the least and whilst this part of the country is rather kiss-me-quick (if you know British seaside towns ….) and scream-if-you-want-to-go-faster than quintessential, it is very special because one of my bestest oldest friends resides here (until I can get her back down south). It’s a pain in the neck to get to in an electric car from my home town but when I do eventually get there we watch movies, walk on the beach and day drink in pubs of the kind you don’t find much in my town!. We eat cake, drink tea and talk and talk and talk. Not much has changed between us in the 35 ish years we have been friends to be fair, and we never tire of each other. She listens, I talk. She favours black clothes, I favour colour. She rarely makes a decision, I am decisive. She drinks rum, I drink gin. She’s easy going, I’m complicated. Growing old is a strange journey… If my soul feels ancient, it seems to me that I’ve just started becoming Me and yet i’m about half way through my existence. There’s a slight panic underlying this truth, a sudden urgency to do, see, create, experience, learn, explore more. All the years lived have left marked. Wrinkles and scars are stories my tongue isn’t telling. Of course, there’s more to this life journey than a piece of neatly ironed skin, there’s more to this body than supple contours - it’s messed up in so many ways by the bumps onto all the life corners, the falls, the hurts, the traumas, the tears carving furrows, the unspoken piercing holes into my heart - so, yes. there is more to all of Me, but somehow, after half a century, i’m still trying to figure out what that is… To be honest, the younger version of Me didn’t believe they would make it past 30… but years of relentless inner work took me out of the darkness towards the light, toward being alive again. And here I am, today, stepping into a new decade with deep, strong, mixed feelings. The past couple of years, i’ve had this heavy and sad feeling of loss, I lost myself somewhere along the way, caught up in trying to make a living to afford this incredible City, working 2 jobs, stuck in the hamster wheel, spinning, enduring an odd schedule isolating me, resulting in deep exhaustion and loneliness. But everything is only temporary, i keep telling myself, change is the only constant. And I am on my way to something different, everyday I must remind myself I am anew. So be quiet, my mind. be open my heart, be free my spirit, be in peace my soul, all we have is only Now. This to me was a meh-de-la-meh-meh book. So let me explain this...... I wanted so much more from this book! Although this book is about Judy's inspiring, informative take on embracing "the" next stage of life, (60 yrs and over) I was surprised that she used quotes and circumstance from well known people, throughout her book (alot of name dropping) which didn't sit very well with me, infact it bloody well irked me so much, it just seemed so un-natural. So much, "such n such quoted this n that". I dnf'd this book because of it, infact I would have hurled it across the room, but figured it wasn't worth that type of energy. It was like ..... "oh I will just mention you in my book" (I'm wondering whether they will get any royalties for that) Judy must have seived through heaps of footage media wise as well ..... just saying 😁 However, in saying that if you are looking for inspiring quotes throughout, and you don't mind the "he said, she said," then sure, give this book a go ..... these will definitely see you through as these are thoughtful and useful, just that I was after something more personal, that's all. Alot of the book is about common sense really, and if you wanting more of a "refreshing of ideas that you had forgotten about" then definitely pick this book up. Since I have children, I really wonder why we celebrate birthdays. Why do we celebrate the person? Why don’t we celebrate their mother who suffered for hours to give birth to them? And even better... Why should I be happy to grow old? This year, many events have made me realize that in fact, we don’t celebrate a birth, we celebrate the last year... We celebrate the fact of still being alive. To be able to live longer, to have the chance to live more happy moments, to see our children grow, to see the world evolve. This year, I have seen several wrinkles appear on my face. Little crow’s feet at the corners of my eyes, lines on the edge of my mouth, where my smile lands. My cheeks are hollowing out... I pull out white hairs every day! From a distance, I still catch faint snippets of other people's conversations in my ears as they continue on their way – while I quietly open my front door again, blissfully tired, and make my way under the warming covers of my home, my safe refuge from the world outside, which remains as fascinating and yet simultaneously terrifying. So frightening and so helpless. This world and the people. So bewildering that war can be spelled again. Who knows how it will go on, how it will be tomorrow? Who knows how many tomorrows there will be, today and now, in this world and with everything, it is and doesn't let go of anyone anymore. Final thoughts and memories of other, more peaceful times before sleep takes me on a journey into my dreams and tells me how it used to be. Sometime, somewhere, and with hope for a better tomorrow.
