“OUT OF THIS WORLD: Works by Steve Tobin” was a prominent exhibition of works by Steve Tobin at @michenerart Art Museum in 2014. It was presented to the public at the opening with a troupe of dancers exploring movements with the artist’s large signature STEEL ROOT sculptures, playing with notions of positive and negative space. Although the metaphor of the roots is evocative of tree formations, these magnificent sculptures are not literally drawn from nature. They are distilled imagery from Asian calligraphy. The treeptych - on display SCX Stage 2 from 10-3pm April 29-May 1st We need to unequivocally love our planet and the people in it and treat it like the loving home it provides before it is too late A three-panel installation of !plastiglomerates!, WOUND and Cricket Feet. Each film tells a different abstract story of climate change and modern humanity and technology’s effect on it. They are commemorative trees built by people in a future without them - tombstones for a nature that once was, in a desolate campsite with specific warnings on each. These people live in a world torn apart by ecological disasters - not too-dissimilar from our own. With sea surface temperatures breaking records almost daily, the AMOC on the verge of collapse, all-time highs around the globe, more than one million species on the brink of extinction, the treeptych is meant to spread awareness about the effects of industry, capitalism, and technology on our planet and draw a parallel between the world of the treeptych and ours. They eulogize an aspect of nature and humanity lost to such change - the self, other people, and loss on a spiritual/existential level. !plastiglomerates! is how the self deteriorates when the planet does. WOUND is how the human family does. Cricket Feet shows the doom presented by climate change for all species and their inherent connectivity through this. The installation is made of recycled/found wood cut and refashioned covered in dead palms and leaves with monitors fit in the front. These discarded dead objects given new form represent the decaying state of our planet and the ways technology will live on and change us in ways that the trees won’t. They are imaginative trees of this future age, dead and unlike any tree in our nature but omitting bright, high-tech lights and images. They have twisted and grown around the monitors - a nature permanently distorted by tech that will live on amongst our creations but consumed by them. It was inspired by Nam June Paik, specifically TV Garden, Hawkins Bolden, Lonnie Holley, Joe Minter, Mary T. Smith, and Clancy Philbrick.
