The Million Masks Of God was the best record Manchester Orchestra has released so far, so it’s nice to have this cinematic little companion to pair with it. “Capital Karma” is an excellent opener here, picking up right where the band left off, building from that deliberate, intimate beginning to the point where it takes off in the bridge and opens up into all of those “oohs” at the end. I like how “The Way” immediately transitions into the tighter, percussive production and how it really utilizes Andy’s voice with those lines in the chorus. “Quietly” follows a similar sort of dynamic build as “Capital Karma,” but makes nice use of repetition and does some really cool stuff with the instrumental section in the last minute. “Letting Go” is probably my overall favorite here, with the best set of lyrics of the bunch (just out the next song) and the vocal samples giving the backing music such an interesting texture. It’s nice to hear a more natural guitar and straightforward song in “Lose You Again.” The harmonies in that one are pretty special, and the backtracked(?) sounds at the end are a pretty nice touch, too. “Rear View” is a wonderful closer, with that incredible fragility in the chromaticism and that layered section near the end before it all pulls back. It’s kind of crazy that something this intricate and good is closing an EP and not a full album. If this is any indication of what’s to come next from this band, we’re in for something special. I like how well they paired this album art with such a beautiful vinyl variant. It’s always a pleasant surprise to pull this one out of the sleeve. This is the last of my top EPs from 2023 to post, so my favorite albums from the year are up next. Anberlin has been one of my favorite bands for close to half of my life, so it’s always going to be good when they release some of the best music of a given year. With that said, it’s a shame that we won’t be getting to hear the band continue to develop the sound on Convinced and Silverline, because this EP in particular feels like a fresh take on what the band is, true to form while adding some exciting new elements. That’s especially true where they add in the heaviness and darker electronic elements; it fills out the more artistic rock parts that have always been there and just elevates everything to another level. This sort of vision and execution is what has made the band special to me over their career, and it’s so great to have something like “Animals” in 2023 after leaving their 2014 farewell tour fully believing I might never hear another new Anberlin song. “Lacerate” and “Decoder” open the EP with all of the energy that you’d expect, but the hooks aren’t quite as infused with the pop sensibilities of their earlier work, and it gives them a sense of maturity that works really well. The band has always brought in 80s elements uniquely, and “Banshee” and “Nothing More” both do so about as effectively as they ever have. That latter song is one of my favorites of the year, and its sense of finality hits even harder knowing what we know now. I might have some reservations about the band moving forward (I’ll still be listening), but it was nice to get this last set of songs from the canonical lineup. This half & half splatter pressing turned out really nicely, too; it has the same sort of motion as the album art. Now that last year’s busyness is (mostly) over, I’m hoping to get back into posting regularly this year, starting with some of my favorite things from 2023. I don’t know where The Brightest Days would’ve landed on my EOTY list if it were a full-length, but it made for an easy pick as my top EP of the year. After a few short, solid releases in 2022, this feels like the next big step forward from the excellent Gami Gang, another set of songs just packed with hooks and fun ideas in a way that reminds me more of Relient K and Motion City Soundtrack than basically anything I’ve ever heard (without losing this band’s own identity at all). That big dynamic build of the title track is so good, and then you get the shreddy head-fake at the beginning of “Thank You New Jersey” before it turns into the best beach rock song of the year. “Picture Frame” makes its money with that little earworm of a riff at the beginning, and then the guys just push it to its absolute limit. I love the zip of “Kobayashi Maru (My Very Own)” and the way they turn the line “I wonder what I’m gonna screw up this time” into something optimistic by the end (and also that breakdown). “Second Best Friend” really steals the show when you flip the record over, with a vulnerable, novel, and catchy take on wanting more out of a friendship. I can’t think of another song like it. “Looking Out” works as a nice little flip side to that one, while “My PG Summer” does its best to prime you for “Few And Far Between,” which is one of the best songs of the whole year. Every single element of that one is perfect, and it’s everything this band does well (including bringing the whole thing back to the beginning perfectly in the outro). This is definitely a summery EP, but I’ve found that it works just as well in every season I’ve had it. The A/B pressing isn’t too shabby, either.
