The past several months I’ve been trying to stay in the moment during shows as close to completely as possible and therefore taking VERY few pictures or videos during them, but I can’t resist quickly snapping one or two, no matter how terrible they come out because I’m not bothering about it. What an absolute delight to finally get to see Belle and Sebastian again after two years, and what a lovely set list. Then I saw that Mike Pinder from the Moody Blues passed away yesterday and it made me think of my dad. He’s been gone for 8 years now and I still miss him every damn day. My dad gave me so many wonderful gifts - artistic ability, a goofy laugh, love of nature, and best of all, adoration for music. Morning coffee and… Cannonball Adderley, “Poppin’ in Paris Live at L’Olympia 1972”. I picked up this RSD release at @popmusicto earlier this week. I was a bit unsure of purchasing a 1970’s record by an artist most noted for his 1960’s, hard bop material but thankfully my hesitancy was completely unfounded. This two disc live set slaps! It is the perfect mix of 70’s fusion and post bop. George Duke’s “Black Messiah” composition is 20 minutes of jazz heaven and one of many highlights on this album! Vor 1983 hatte ich bereits ein starkes Interesse an Musik. Ich hatte verschiedene Künstler und Bands entdeckt und einige davon favorisiert. Das Interesse stieg immer mehr und wurde natürlich durch Mitschüler und eifrigem TV und Radiokonsum befeuert. Einige Alben aus dieser Zeit gehören zu denen, die ich bis heute schätze. Das multimediale Meisterwerk „Purple Rain“ von Prince & The Revolution steht natürlich an erster Stelle. Es ist eines dieser Alben, die meiner Meinung nach perfekt gelungen sind. Es gibt keinen Filler und durchweg nur sehr gute Songs. Es ist für mich vom ersten bis letzen Ton magisch. Bei dem Album „Some Great Reward“ von Depeche Mode habe ich bereits oft genug erwähnt, wie sehr ich es schätze. Natürlich darf es auch in der Jahresliste nicht fehlen. Songs und Sound haben noch immer extremen Einfluss auf meine Lauschgewohnheiten. Die Achtziger sind auch das Jahrzehnt der Superstars und den Alben mit denen sie ihr Superstardasein definierten. Dazu gehören unter anderem „Born In the U.S.A.“ von Bruce Springsteen und „Privat Dancer“ von Tina Turner. Es ist Tina‘s Comeback Album und machte sie zur „Queen of Rock 'n' Roll". Beim Boss zementiert es, was schon jeder wusste, dass er die Zukunft des Rock’n’Roll sei. Die meisten der Alben wecken Teenagererinnerungen. Zum Beispiel Genesis, die mich mit klangvollem Poprock Sound überzeugten oder Howard Jones mit dem populären SynthPop dieser Zeit. Die Eurythmics begeisterten mich mit kunstvoll arrangiertem New Wave und Sade mit coolem stilvollem Jazz Pop. Van Halen erobern mich mit schwungvollem Hardrock und Billy Idol rebellierte mit zahlreichen Ohrwürmern. Noch heute bin ich begeistert über die musikalische Vielfalt dieser Zeit. Viele Werke haben sich bis heute gut gehalten und der Sound ist noch immer beliebt.
