Hey Ramvets, As we welcome Women’s History Month, we want to pay tribute to WW II Coast Guard Veteran and Fordham professor emerita of psychology, Olivia Hooker. She passed away on Nov 21, 2018 at the age of 103. We honor her service, sacrifice and her bravery, becoming the first black woman to serve on active duty in the Coast Guard. She was a student veteran after WW II, earning her master’s degree in psychological services from Columbia University. She taught at Fordham from ‘63 to ‘85. Olivia served from 1945-1946 and was known as one of the last surviving members of the Tulsa race riots of 1921. This month we honor all the women who answered the call. Thank you for your impeccable service to our country. Happy Women’s History Month!😊 #Ramvets #FordhamUniveristy #FordhamVeteranAlumni #SVALEADS #WeAreSVA #WomensHistoryMonth #WomenVeterans

My Fellow Fordham Veterans,  Today is the birthday of Fordham Alum, Father Vincent Capodanno.  Father Capodanno was a Navy Chaplain who died in the service of God and Country administering comfort and aid to wounded Marines.   It was during his second tour on September 4, 1967, with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines in Viet Nam, that Father Vincent Capodanno made the ultimate sacrifice.  Let us remember him with honor and affection.    #Ramvets #FordhamUniveristy #FordhamVeteranAlumni #SVALEADS #WeAreSVA

On this day in 1775, British and American soldiers exchanged fire in the Massachusetts towns of Lexington and Concord... Thus the American Revolutionary War began! Above, is the drawing, "Study for The Death of General Montgomery in the Attack on Quebec" by John Trumbull (1756-1843). Trumbull was often criticized for depicting battles from the Revolutionary War in which American forces were defeated, as was the case at Quebec, where American forces fought bravely against superior British forces. The goal of Trumbull’s history paintings, however, was not simply to narrate important events from the Revolution. Rather, Trumbull was concerned with displaying moments of eternal virtue, bravery, and courage that transcend all national boundaries. You can find more of Trumbull's sketches by visiting the University Libraries' Digital Collections! #FordhamUniveristy #FordhamLibraries

On this day in 1784, the Treaty of Paris was ratified by the Continental Congress. With that, the U.S. officially became an independent and sovereign nation. The treaty had been signed in Paris on September 3, 1783, but required Congress to ratify and return the document to England within six months. They were cutting it close - as late as January 1784, they were missing representatives from 6 out of the 13 states - but managed to get approval from all of the delegates necessary. The Visual Arts Department is thrilled to share “Highlights from the Senior Seminar”, a group exhibition in the Lipani Gallery. Each fall, Fordham students working on their thesis projects in architecture, graphic design, film & video, painting & drawing, and photography come together for the Senior Seminar to present their work, provide constructive criticism, and develop their personal vision. The semester culminates in the annual Highlights exhibition, featuring a selection of student works. These works (forthcoming) will offer a sampling of the student exhibitions that will be on display in the spring of 2022. Special thanks to seniors, Lara Foley and Mateo Solis Prada for the exhibition poster design! #fordhamvisualarts #fordhamuniveristy

Thinking of my dad on Veteran’s Day and came across this photo that I have often wondered if was taken by Slim Aarons. (Swipe 👈) Before traveling the world photographing the rich and the famous, George “Slim” Aarons @slimaaronsofficial was a WWII Army photographer for Yank magazine. According to Town & Country (Sept 2016), Slim recorded the siege of Monte Cassino in Italy and was wounded during the invasion of Anzio when the Germans blew up a dock along an Italian beachhead. He reached Rome in time to see it fall to the Allies and took a now famous shot of an American soldier holding a baby in font of joyful crowds massing in the streets. It was on the cover of Yank in July 1944. (Swipe 👉) My father also served in Italy during WWII and basically had the same tour of duty. Dad served in the 5th Army, which fought the battles of Monte Cassino, the Anzio landings, and the liberation of Rome. Sound familiar? And who else would photograph soldiers playing tennis during the war if not Slim! I need to confer with Aarons’ Archivist Shawn Waldron @shawn_waldron on this, but according to T&C, Slim vowed that he’d never photograph death or destruction again: “I’d wandered through enough concentration camps and bombed-out villages. I’d slept in the mud and been shot at. I owed myself some easy, luxurious living. I wanted to be on the sunny side of the street,” he said. After 19 months “at the front,” my dad felt the same way. In fact, he arrived home with PTSD and had to attend Fordham University - instead of Harvard, where he was both captain and coach of the tennis team! He said his faith in God got him through it all and when I was growing up he had nerves of steel. He never discussed the war with me but the more I read about his experience, the more grateful I am for all he and so many others sacrificed for our feeedom ❤️🙏🏻🇺🇸 #feelinggrateful #veteransdays2021 #thanksdad #usarmy #WWII #tennis #service #yankmagazine #slimaarons #thepelhamsun #fredkraisjr #fordhamuniveristy #fordhamtennis #1940s
