Gabriele Di Paola was born on June 8, 1920 in Italy. He was a student of medicine. Beginning in 1922, Italy was governed by Benito Mussolini, a violent fascist dictator. Upon the fall of the dictator, the country was quickly taken by the Nazis. During the Nazi regime in Italy, Gabriele was most likely involved with the Italian resistance. On June 21, 1944, Gabriele treated a wounded partisan. For this, he was denounced and shot. At the young age of twenty-four, he was killed in front of his family and friends for a noble cause. On December 12, 1946, he was posthumously awarded an honorary degree in medicine and surgery. His family was deeply impacted by his sacrifice and death and wishes that no one should ever suffer for a reason like this again. Gabriele was a hero of the Italian resistance and deserves the utmost respect. May he rest peacefully. Thank you for your heroism, Gabriele. REMEMBER GABRIELE DI PAOLA. “It was the luckiest day of my life … I couldn't believe my eyes.” Gina Rappaport was among about 2,500 prisoners from Bergen-Belsen concentration camp stranded after their German guards had abandoned them in a train in April 1945. Gina saw someone in the distance. “I was sure it was a dream, but still it was true.” The man was an American, and his fellow soldiers were just as stunned by what they saw. George C. Gross, a tank commander, was struck by the “skeletal figures” who approached and the bodies left in the train cars. Gina, who had once taught languages and literature, offered to act as George’s translator, introducing the troops to the passengers. “She spoke English very well and was evidently conversant with several other languages besides her native Polish,” George later wrote. “We stood in front of the tank as a long line of men, women, and little children formed itself spontaneously, with great dignity and no confusion, to greet us. It is a time I cannot forget, for it was terribly moving to see the courtesy with which they treated each other, and the importance they seemed to place on reasserting their individuality in some seemingly official way.” Gina had survived two years in Bergen-Belsen following imprisonment in the Tarnów ghetto, where she saw Jewish women and children senselessly shot to death in the streets. But on this day, she posed for photos in front of the tanks. 𝐎𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐠 Escorting the ‘Big Friends’ By the end of 1944, the 8th’s conversion of its FGs from P-38 and P-47 to the P-51 was all but complete, with 14 of 15 groups converted. This steady rise in numbers of the definitive high altitude fighter spelt a corresponding decline for the Jagdwaffe, as the Fw 190 and latest versions of the Bf 109 were outclassed. Efforts like the Ta 152 were effective at altitude, but constructed in too small a number to turn the tide. The Netherlands Carillon, a 127-foot bell tower, is located just outside Arlington National Cemetery. It was given to the United States from the people of the Netherlands in the 1950s, in recognition of the US’ efforts to liberate the Netherlands from Nazi occupation during WWII. The Carillon features 53 bells, each inscribed with poetry and symbols representing Dutch society and culture. The bells chime every 15 minutes, and you can even hear live concerts played on them on specific dates in the fall. On 27 April 1944, after receiving clearance from the control tower, PFC Wilson along with 9 crew members aboard B-24J Liberator #44-40359 lifted off from Wheeler Army Air Force Base in Hawaii for a 10 hour reconnaissance mission over the Pacific Ocean around the Hawaiian Islands. They were never seen nor heard from again. The entire crew of 10 remain Missing today. Gordon attended the University of Kentucky before enlisting. This cenotaph is in Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Darkness Calls the Tiger by @janyretromp A deep heartfelt read about the daughter of a missionary bound to save her people, and a new missionary from the US determined to prove himself, his faith and his trust. Another amazing WWII read but this is unlike many of the others out there. Based on the story of Japan intent on taking over mainland Asia, and this story specifically focuses on Burma and the war in that region. Kai has never really felt belonging in her village but through her survival of a tiger attack and knowledge of the land, stories some would call folklore proceeds her and so when war comes to them, she knows what she must do to survive. Ryan, the new missionary to this parts needs to prove himself and so when the other missionary John leaves the village for a different mission, he leaves things in Ryan's hands, who has made an impossible promise. As the Japanese descend and the truth of the horrors of war unfolds before Kai's eyes, she takes things into her own hands determined to get revenge for those she has lost and for the anger she has long held inside. As they continue to fight for their lives and work to save the refugees they have to overcome the struggle that they just may need each other if they want to survive these mountains and war. This was a really deep read and you really feel for the characters. Thank you to the publisher and author for the complementary novel and for allowing me to be a part of the launch team. According to statements by veterans of the 116th PD and residents the tank fell over due to detonation pressure by dropped bombs into the Ourthe river, or the bridge collapsed and the panther landed on the turret. The crew died because of the impact or drowned. This Panther was recovered out of the river Ourthe by French engineers on 20th September 1947, the remains of the crew killed in the attack were discovered when the Panther was pulled from the river. The Panther was pulled from the riverbank in the 1950's and placed in the town. In the 1960's it was placed as a monument on the Rue de Bastogne. It was repainted a few times and replaced on a new spot a few meters from the parkinglot. A few years ago it was send to the Bastogne Barracks to be restored for static display as a monument. M4(75) Sherman - Walkaround - wiltz. Walkaround video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAal8esx_R4 The M4 Sherman, officially Medium Tank, M4, was the most widely used medium tank by the United States and Western Allies in WWII. The M4 Sherman proved to be reliable, relatively cheap to produce, and available in great numbers. It was also the basis of several other armored fighting vehicles including self-propelled artillery, tank destroyers, and armored recovery vehicles. The M4(75) Sherman would have had a cast nose, turret and a welded hull, with a 75mm cannon. It would have had applique armour welded in front of the crew positions and additional armour welded to the sides. M4 was fitted a Continental R975-C1 or -C4 9 cylinder radial gasoline engine. The M4 would see service with other countries like Britain, France and Poland. Production would stop in 1944 after 6748 were produced. This Sherman with serial number 30270, RN 3038800, was manufactured by Pullman standard in May, 1943. It was abandoned on December 19, 1944, after it ran into a dung pit, and got stuck. It was removed and placed on the Place Des Martyrs. During the start of the Battle of the Bulge this Command Sherman, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel R. W. Ripple, had to retreat from it's position at Erpeldange, and moved to Wiltz. Arriving at Wiltz, the Sherman came under fire and Ripples driver reversed the Sherman into a house,that collapsed instantly, the tank was now stuck under a lot of rubble,the Sherman made it's way out but ran into a dung pit, were it got stuck again. The crew abandoned the Sherman, but were captured, and send to a POW camp, for the remainder of the war. Lieutenant Colonel Richard W. Ripple, returned to the town of Wiltz in 1994, and was pleasantly surprised, that his tank had become a monument to the Battle. Richard W.
