On April 30th, National Military Brats Day during the Month of the Military Child honors the children of military personnel. About 1 in 25 Americans is a Military Brat. Since the Department of Defense did not keep precise records of military personnel's children, no one knows the exact number. None the less, those children make up a cultural group whose members live in all 50 states, in most American Territories and numerable foreign countries. While they choose varied careers and interests, they also share a common culture. Once a nomadic band who struggled to stay in touch, Military Brats are leveraging Social Media to pick up and reconnect the disjointed pieces of their childhood. Unlike most children who shared the same classmates K-12, Brats often attend 4, 6, even 10 - 12 different schools. They seldom stay in the same place for more than a year or two. Many whose childhood homes were on military installations aren’t allowed to “go home again” unless they join the services as adults. Through significant sites such as the Military Brats Registry, Operation Foot Locker, American Overseas Schools Historical Society, and others, Brats are finding lost friends. They are sharing stories and experiences. Brats are also organizing around causes important to them. National Military Brats Day offers us an opportunity to celebrate children in the military. The day includes those whose parents are currently serving and veterans, too. When considering the sacrifices of military personnel, include the youngest military members, their children. Just got around to photographing a few more uniforms so today will be a double post. This uniform belonged to William F. Siedschlag. William enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on August 5th, 1942. William was eventually assigned to Company E, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment on August 17th, 1943. His MOS was 504 which meant he was an ammo carrier. William would get his first taste of combat during the Battle of Tarawa. On November 21st, 1943, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines landed at Bairiki (2 miles east of Betio) to prevent the withdrawal from the Japanese forces at Betio where the major fight was happening. On November 24th, 1943, one day after Betio was cleared of Japanese forces, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines were sent to Eita (20 miles east of Betio) to clean up enemy resistance in the remaining islands which make up Tarawa Atoll. On the night of November 26th, 1943, while on Buariki Island (northern Tarawa Atoll), 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines caught up with the fleeing Japanese garrison. A battle ensued with Company E and Company G leading the attack. The marines fought late into the night and into the early morning of November 27th, 1943, until they reached the other side of Buariki. In the fight, the marines killed 175 Japanese defenders at the cost of 34 marines killed (19 from Company E) and 59 marines wounded. Luckily, William made it through the battle unscathed. This uniform belonged to Robert W. Miner. Robert was born on November 6th, 1918 in Marshall County, West Virginia. In 1919/1920, Roberts’ family moved from West Virginia to Ravenna, Ohio. In 1938, when Robert was 20, he married Norma Taylor. They together had a son named Wayne In 1942. On May 27th, 1944, Robert was drafted into the United States Marine Corps. After completing training, he was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines which were attached to the 6th Marine Division. Robert was assigned to a Light Machine Gun crew. On April 1st, 1945, Robert along with 1st Battalion, 4th Marines landed on the Western Coast of Okinawa at 8:37 am. When the Marines landed, they encountered little to no resistance, and found the landing beaches deserted. The only Japanese met were a couple stragglers. The 4th Marines suffered only 3 casualties in the landing. 1st Battalion, 4th Marines began to rapidly move inland. They encountered little resistance, and captured Youtan Airfield at 10:30 am. The 4th Marines continued to advance well past the airfield, and dug in for the night. At 7:30 am, April 2nd, the 4th Marines continued their advance towards the east coast of Okinawa. There was little resistance until midday. While 1st Battalion, 4th Marines were advancing, they were suddenly attacked from all approaches and pinned down by multiple Japanese machine gun positions. In this ambush, Robert received a bullet wound to his right foot. Robert’s best friend was also shot down and killed beside him. Robert was shortly thereafter evacuated off Okinawa. Robert would undergo multiple surgeries and eventually have a steel plate put into his foot. Robert was discharged from the Marine Corps on March 8th, 1946. After the war, Robert would work as a machinist for an electrical company. Robert sadly passed away on July 21st, 1996. Tammy Smith is a retired Army Major General. At the conclusion of her 35-year career, she was serving at the Pentagon as the Military Advisor to the Assistant Secretary of the Army. She was responsible for developing innovative policy and providing oversight for the Army Quality of Life portfolio. Upon her promotion to Brigadier General in 2012, mere months after the repeal of Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell (DADT), then Brigadier General Smith gained unexpected visibility as the US military’s first openly LGBT General/Flag officer.
