#gangaramayatemple Don Bastian (de Silva Jayasuriya Goonewardane, Mudaliyar), a 19th-century shipping merchant who was seeking suitable land to build a temple for the Matara Sri Dharmarama thero, bought a beautiful tract belonging to three Moors, and filled and prepared the land at great expense. The land was bordered on two sides by the Moragoda Ela and the Pettigala Ela was used to build the temple, which was subsequently named the Padawthota Gangaramaya Viharaya. The Mudaliyar, with the assistance of the people built a great ‘Chaitya’ (Dagaba) of 30 Riyans, and built a great decorative arch (thorana) and a ‘Sandakada pahana’ modeled on the ones found at Anuradhapura, at the entrance to the temple. A ‘Bo’ sapling brought from the great Sri Maha Bhodiya in Anuradhapura, was planted with his own hands and nurtured. The country of cinammon and tea. Ceylon. Sri Lanka. And my first few days in Colombo and Sigiriya. Starting this adventure with the poya (full moon celebrations), wandering through the chaotic, lively markets by the day, pausing at midday to catch the warm rain into my hands by the Gangaramaya Temple. Followed by the gratfulness as I watch the sun disappearing into the sea. As I arrive after 4h in Sigiryia, the locals nod their head to say no, shake sideways to say yes, point left to the right... but we find a way to climb 2 rocks in Sigiryia - Pidurangala and Sigiryia's Lion Rock. 11km across the land, infinity steps towards the sky. So the sky is the limit - they say. And so it is! I almost kill all the mosquitos in Sigiryia when spraying the repellant onto my sunburnt arms (along with my asthma-suffering companion), but in return I save a monkey which is squinting its eyes and almost smiling, covered in white powder as it munches on a pack of medicine pills. To the rescue! (I sent my hero to climb the rock! But I've spotted it - hence, I'm the rescuer!). Antihistamine meds left the monkey sleepy, as we climb the rock to watch another sleepy sun. Leaving Sigiryia for another destination. But just before I hop into the car (hoping I survive this journey while they constantly beep and overtake 3 cars sideways at once) I catch a few breaths on the sun terrace. "I shall close this unbrella", I think. And I shut it on my head. Almost 2 killed, but one rescued. Life is all about the balance - so Inés to the rescue on my next stop. Trip to Sri Lanka! 7-16th Feb.,2024 観光編 Day 7-8 Hikkaduwa 3日目は日がな一日ゴーグルをして潮だまりに沈んでは熱帯魚を眺めていた。魚の世界にお邪魔しているようでとても楽しい。 ウニを手に取ったガイドさんが今度は小さなウツボが２匹隠れているのを教えてくれた。私はウツボがとても苦手。目が怖い。だけどなんだか目が離せなくて、何時間もそこで費やした。 翌日４日目はHikkaduwaからColomboへ移動する日。午前中もしつこく魚を見て、名残惜しい中昼ごろ出発。一応HikkaduwaのTips、岩場が多いのでマリンシューズを持参すべし。Uberのタクシーで高速を飛ばし約2.5時間、Colomboのホテルが行っている14時半からの市内無料観光ツアーにギリギリ間に合った。 今日の宿Marino Beach Hotel Colomboの無料ツアーは車中から名所を眺めるだけかと思ったら、意外と3時間くらいかけてじっくり観光するものだった。まずは国立博物館へ。45分の自由時間で、仏像や昔の宝物などゆっくり鑑賞した。 その後独立記念広場、ガンガーラーマ マハー ウィハーラというColomboで一番古い寺院（棚のカオスな感じが良かった）、海辺のGalle Face Greenという広場（凧あげやラグビーを楽しむ人々がいた）を回った。 私たちはその後の予定が迫っていたため、広場でツアーを抜けてホテルへ戻り、元ホーチミン市在住の友人家族との夕食へ。TukTukのおじちゃんは相変わらずものすごく吹っ掛けてくるので無視し、Uberのタクシーで待ち合わせのレストランへ向かう。 今までは地方都市ばかり回っていたのでColomboの都会感がちょっと新鮮。海岸線に建物が並ぶ景色、夕日の雰囲気は、なんとなくフィリピンのマニラを思い出した。 久しぶりの再会＆乾杯しながらコロンボでの生活の話を聞くと、ホーチミン市がいかに便利かを実感した。私と友人が過ごしたこの10年で特に日本人が便利に暮らせる方向に発展したんだな。コロンボは都会で近代的なモールもあるし、レストランのあるホテルはとても煌びやかだったけれど、日系スーパーどころか韓国系スーパーも見かけない。 そんなコロンボの、良いところを見つけて生活している友人は本当に頼もしい！ 友人と別れた後、大きなスーパーに寄ってちょっと買い物（目が怖いビスケットの広告）、そしてホテルに戻りこの日は終了。 #スリランカ旅行記 #スリランカ #ヒッカドゥワ #Colombo#コロンボ #SriLanka #SriLankaTrip #Hikkaduwa#ガンガーラーママハーウィハーラ #GangaramayaTemple #Gangaramaya #GalleFaceGreen#ゴールフェイスグリーン
