The Palazzo Butera is a very large palazzo in the Kalsa district of Palermo (my favourite area, a bit like the Marais in Paris), fronting the water. Magnificently restored into a private gallery space (open to the public). Contemporary art (a lot of it quite good) and decorative arts (art nouveau etc). I wish they had focused more on the wall (frescoes) than the magnificent ceilings (it’s a thing in Sicily). It is so large that it is really worthwhile spending a leisurely few hours here. The courtyard and terrace were covered in an abundance of flowers - sadly it rained, but I will go back for photos when the sky is blue. The Palazzo Butera was owned by the Princes of Butera. The Prince Pietro Lanza Galletti and his wife Giulia Florio d’Ondes still resided in the palace during World War II; two of their sons died during the war. After 1950, the palace had various owners of local government institutions, housing a tourism institute. In 2016, the palace was purchased by the gallery owner Massimo Valsecchi and his wife Francesca, who have led a restoration of the structure for use as museum and cultural events. The Consequences : Fishing Quarter Gallery Brighton ( between the piers ) 17/18/19th May @amydouglas71 @gavinfry1147 ... be there and face the consequences. The three artists used the game of consequences to establish this show quickly and here are some of those initial drawings, open to you the visitor/viewer to untangle any psychological interpretation you can summon. Clearly identifiably the works of three artists but making one coherent show skilfully curated in this lovely brick arched gallery on the beach promenade level with great footfall and a predominantly new audience for art. As Capability Brown said of his visits to landscapes he was about to transform. “There Are Capabilities”. Here too and for a couple of years many fine shows have been “underneath the arches” which brings to mind best wishes to Gilbert and George, one of whom I hear has been unwell. But what of this show? Amy Douglas’s reworking of broken Staffordshire ornaments transforms and improves many of these Victorian Knick-knacks that I associate with my grandma’s cottage. Gavin Fry shows collages of images and lace and embroidery, referencing complex consequences of a life in teaching and art and David Harkins has a new set of paintings of single humans which suggest to me a Sartre character such as Antoine Roquentin, in Nausea seeking to understand humans place and purpose in the world. I have never been a massive fan of #gilbertandgeorge (too self-involved) but seeing their works in a palazzo in Palermo is something else! 🌟 @palazzobutera hosts the collection of Francesco and Massimo Valsecchi; they were previously based in London and their collection was shown at the Fitzwilliam and the Ashmolean. Now it is housed in this grand palazzo, previously the home of the Branciforte family, in the cool neighbourhood of Kalsa. This is an amazing example of how to do a historical renovation, and how to build a collection with a very strong aesthetic and thematic coherence 🧡 The flashy and the abject are in dialogue with minimalist and conceptual pieces, all enhanced by incredible furniture and glass. Looking Back: ‘THE MEAL’ held 55 years ago today! ‘THE MEAL’, 8pm Wednesday 14th May 1969, Gilbert and George and their guest David Hockney dined in the music room at Ripley, Bromley, Kent. The menu was from Isabelle Beeton, Doreen Marriott was the cook and Richard Wood the butler. An audience viewed the Sculpture. 1, 3 & 7. Slides of ‘THE MEAL’ 2. Ticket for ‘THE MEAL’ 4. Invitation to ‘THE MEAL’ ‘THE MEAL’, one of their very first sculptural works, was an elaborate dinner party which included thirteen guests, properly served by maid and butler, a chef who prepared a meal from a Victorian cookery manual: Mrs. Beeton’s Book of Household Management originally published in 1861, and the sculptor's guest, England's best-known painter David Hockney. Devoted to art and culture's outward usages, Gilbert and George bear no grudge against those who have made peace with established social form and instead displaced formal civility into the aesthetic spotlight. As they announced in 1978, 'We uphold Traditional Values.?’ They announced their early shows with cards of the sort sent out by posh shops. The menu of The Meal (1969), distributed in limited numbers after the event, offers a stained-in sample of each dish beside its name - shades of the forensic laboratory's court displays. 💫 𝑪𝑶𝑴𝑰𝑵𝑮 𝑺𝑶𝑶𝑵 💫 Our upcoming exhibition 𝑇𝑜𝑔𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 – 𝐶𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝐴𝑟𝑡 𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑒𝑠 aims to challenge the myth of the solitary artist and explore the unique dynamics of collective creativity. Nothing but artworks that were produced by collectives, artist duos, one-time collaborators, as well as artworks intentionally designed to facilitate other artworks are showcased – think of iconic duos and collectives such as Marina Abramović & Jan Hoet, Gilbert & George, Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys or Ex-artists’ collective (Anikó Loránt & Kaszás Tamás), just to name a few. By showing artworks that resulted from artists working closely together, the exhibition aims to illuminate the diverse landscape of collaborative art practices and challenges the prevailing narrative of the individual artist. 🖼️ 𝐴 = 𝐵, 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐚 & 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐞 (1992, 62 x 84 mm).
