Too beautiful not to share! This Epiphyllum opened it’s first blossom on Easter Sunday and is really putting on a show now! Epiphyllums are epiphytic (a plant that grows in trees) cacti that are very easy to grow and very easy to root in a good well draining cactus mix, which we have available at the nursery. They’re virtually thornless, too, wouldn’t you know! This gorgeous Cymbidium Orchid was gifted to us by one of our customers, and is now on display as a specimen plant here at the nursery. Cymbidiums are a terrestrial orchid, and are one of the only species of orchids that can be successfully grown outdoors in our Southern California climate. They perform well with minimal care in locations with a few hours of direct morning or late afternoon sun, and protection from hard frosts. They bloom best when potbound, and when the leaves have a bit of a yellowish color (despite the semi-stressed appearance it gives them). Repot every few years after blooming, selecting a pot that is an appropriate size to allow them to become rootbound, with a terrestrial orchid soil mix. Let them dry ever-so-slightly between thorough soakings, and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer twice monthly after watering. More complicated fertilizer schedules and care instructions exist for those who want to become seasoned Cymbidium hobbyists.
