🌲🌿NEW🌿🌲 Douglas Fir Yarrow Hydrosol is now available! This synergistic hydrosol was just distilled a few days ago and smells amazing! Crafted from the fresh, vibrant, spring growth of wild Douglas Fir tips and the verdant leaves of yarrow fresh from the garden. It concentrates and captures the aromatic essence and energy of spring in the lush, conifer forests of far Northern California and the vibrant, new growth of spring herbs typified in yarrow. Two medicinal plants long connected to the human psyche with archetypal energies of protection, healing and tranquility. I love creating these co-distillations, as unique elements emerge in the alchemy of the plants’ union and transmutation. Terpene rich, citrus notes classic of Doug fir and other true fir needles, blend with green herbaceous notes of yarrow. Deeper still there are very ethereal, subtle undertones of violet and spring sunshine warming the vital waters of the trees. For me, this distillation was a synesthetic experience, the notes wafting from the still and hydrosol evoking waves of color ranging from green to blue throughout the process. My neural pathways processing the scent in both olfactory and visual ways, leaving me without the proper words to describe the awe of it all. Many steps were involved to create this hydrosol. I collected the fresh new growth of young Douglas fir tips on a sunny spring morning and soaked them overnight in the pot of the still to break down the waxy cuticle and prime the needles for extraction. The following morning, fresh yarrow leaves were harvested from the garden and packed in the column. A slow, low distillation yielded a truly unique and beautiful spring hydrosol with many medicinal and energetic applications. Warning: Long rambling post ahead... Some days in the shop, as in life, are more difficult than others. I was excited to get more work done on this wall cabinet today. Was going to cut my first dovetails in over two years and get it from "chunks of wood" into something that starts to resemble a project. I remembered how the process is SUPPOSED to go. But nothing FELT right. As things were progressing, I kept telling myself things like, "it's just a shop cabinet," and, "these are your first ones in years! Of course they're not gonna be great!" But the truth is....it bothered me. "You're better than this." "Why do you bother if this is the kind of work you're gonna put into the world?" Well, I'll tell you what, Me! I bother because even the worst handcut dovetail shows that it was a PERSON making this thing. A person who has bad days, as we all do. And you know what else, Me? That carcass is dead-on square and those corners are plenty tight enough to keep it that way well into the future. Not every day can be your best day. And not every thing you put into the world will be the best thing you've ever put into the world. But that doesn't mean there won't be better things, and better days, still to come. Maybe tomorrow you won't cut yourself with a Japanese hand saw. The design and making of Acute And Obtuse was an iterative process. Using only reclaimed materials, we adapted quickly to their availability and characteristics in a fast pace festival timeline, without losing design ambition. The toxicity and risk of welding thin galvanised steel meant another material was needed as joints. Working with fabricator @rosiestricklanddesign , Douglas Fir beams, reclaimed from a demolished Victorian army barrack, were incorporated to complete the construction of the pieces. To balance and contrast the visual sharpness of the steel, the Douglas Fir pieces adopted clean rounded forms. Signs of ageing on the reclaimed wood were intentionally left unpolished to display its history or were even made central to the design. Massive credit to @rosiestrickland__ who led the fabrication and enriched the design so much with her material knowledge and passion for ecological building practice. Sweet douglas fir bar for this home in Stratford! This project started with an old counter from an old general store in Montague years ago that was owned by a relative of the customer. They had been saving it with hopes of someday salvaging it into something useable. We started with stripping down the old counter to see what we were working with. Once we knew what wood the original counter was made out of we headed over to @eastcoastspecialtyhardwoods to pick up our beautiful douglas fir lumber. The counter needed a few additions including being extended up to bar height and a new end panel as the counter is just a portion of what was originally in the store. The back wall of cabinetry is made with small intentional details that bring the two peices together like the v groove panelling we made and the matching crown we had @markanwoodmillersinc mill for us. This evergreen is the most commonly grown tree for Christmas trees in N America! and is pretty good firewood too. It will grow in moist to dry sites (they require sufficient watering to get established) fulls un to part shade. These trees are an important food source for many wildlife species, from squirrels, to birds, to deer! Deer will graze the young shoots in spring - be forewarned. Been through a lot lately…. This unexpected Douglas Fir tree fell on my shop recently. What you aren’t seeing in the picture is the 73’ F250 that also took a huge hit and load. If it weren’t for the truck, and the steel shelving I store my veneer on, ( with perfect placement vertically/ structurally, I have no doubt this 100’ tree would’ve been far deeper than where it stopped in the roof. The trucks a loss, but it saved a far worse potential outcome. Damaged about 10 sheets of Anegre veneer, absolutely no big deal there! Roof is fixed, shelves mostly bent back, interior sheeting’s done, and I’m moving the veneer back onto the shelves. It’s been incredibly physically demanding to say the least.
