How did Winter Park get its street names? From time to time, CWP will provide those answers. Today’s lesson: HARPER STREET—off W Morse Blvd and home to the Winter Park Library. Also related to Harper’s Tavern (now the #RavenousPig) Named for Jim Harper, 3 time WP city commissioner and founder of Harper Plumbing and Heating (1911), responsible for providing equipment and technology for some of the most recognizable buildings in Central Florida: the original Orange Co Courthouse, Rollins, UCF and Valencia campuses, the Hamilton Hotel on Park Ave (now Park Plaza), Florida Hospital on E Rollins, OIA Airsides, and NASA complex (1961-1981), including the massive Vehicle Assembly Plant In 1934 Harper donated land to Rollins College for use as a recreational venue. It became present day Harper-Shepherd Field, home to Rollins Baseball. Despite not specifically advertising their burger, many people say it’s their go-to choice in the area. It also came highly recommended by a follower of BMB, @Hammy_361. I decided to try the Hollywood Cheese Burger which is a ½ pound certified black angus burger with lettuce tomato, onion, mayo, and green pepper. I added bacon and asked for it to be cooked medium rare. @Hammy_361 chose the plain cheeseburger, medium well. The burger was pub style and was displayed very nicely with the bacon laid on the burger like a pinwheel. Everything looked great. The only thing I did not understand was the hunk of raw green pepper — I thought it would have been sautéed. The burger reminded me of the other pub burgers I have had (Murphy’s Loft and Glass Lounge). It was nestled in a kaiser roll and was very flavorful. After a few bites, I noticed that the burger was not cooked medium rare. I looked over at Hammy_361’s burger and his burger was — they had accidentally mixed up the patties. Regardless the burger was very good and flavorful. I would definitely recommend if you are in the area of Jonestown, PA, or Fort Indiantown Gap to stop in and try this burger. I would stick with just the cheeseburger instead of the Hollywood Burger. Thank you to @Hammy_361 for the recommendation. 🍔 Beyond the Burger: Harpers Tavern is considered casual fine dining, with a full menu of classic dishes from steaks, seafood and pasta to daily drink and food specials. 🍔 Outside the Bun: The Tavern has a rich history and is a staple in the area of Fort Indiantown Gap. The original tavern was built as early as 1730. In 1761, the land was purchased by German immigrant Adam Harper, one of the first settlers of Hanover Township. Adam’s son, John’s original building (circa 1804) includes what is now the bar area and dining room known as “The Library.” This is not only a popular hangout for the locals but also for soldiers training at the Gap. December 6. Glimpses of beautiful blue sky today! And this great old house and property. From the mailboxes in front, it is clearly apartments now. It is located near an historic tavern which was built in 1804. I was unable to find specific information on this property, but it may be what was Harper’s Homestead.
