Das Galaxien Paar M65 und M66 im Sternbild Löwe bilden zusammen mit der Galaxie Ngc 3628 das berühmte Leo Triplett. Sie sind schätzungsweise 32 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernt, und in etwa so groß wie unsere Milchstraße. Sie strahlen vergleichsweise hell, durch ein großes Amateurteleskop könnte man sie immerhin als schwaches Fleckchen visuell wahrnehmen. Für die Details wie zum Beispiel die Spiralarme usw. reicht es aber natürlich nicht, da muss man mit Kameras ran. Meistens werden alle 3 Galaxien in einem Bild festgehalten. Dafür müsste ich das kleinere Teleskop nehmen, jedoch hat dieser den Hauptspiegel nicht perfekt sauber, was das fotografieren ohne Filterung praktisch unmöglich macht. I used the popular broadband approach (LRGB), but also gathered more than 100 hours in narrow band filters in order to see the star forming regions and rich nebulae in this neighbouring galaxy. The image also shows some IFN around M33. The resulting image has more than 150 hours of exposure captured from my backyard observatory, located Prades in a Bortle 4 dark sky in the south of Barcelona. I highlighted a faint nebula detected in the [OIII] and Ha channels that has been finally published as a new discovery. It was published as a Research Note of the American Astronomical Society. I named it Roig1 Prades Sky in the memory of my grandfather, Jaume Roig, who introduced me into astronomy back in the 80’s when I was a child. 21 hours in Death Valley meant: 4 hours sleep to get up before sunrise 20 miles over the speed limit to reach the summit 6 trailheads that I decided were too sketch for my MINI 51 minutes riding my bike below sea level because obvi 5.1 minutes psyching myself up to cross a narrow ridge 3-second decision to stay late and chance the sunset (no-brainer) 2 scary hours on a deserted road afterwards in order to save 25 minutes on the drive home… 834 photos (no joke)… 10 billion stars (estimate) in the Gold Tier/largest Dark Sky National Park in the nation (fun fact)… …and a once-in-a-lifetime chance (kind of) to see 1 foot of water revive the 120,000 year old Lake Manly in the normally dry Badwater Basin, 282 feet below sea level. It was incredible!! Pretty bummed that I was four days too late to be allowed to take my kayak or paddle board out on it, but the sunset + reflection made up for it and more. I accidentally captured my second galaxy photo last month when I trying to capture the comet 12P/ Pons-Brooks. I did not realize it until go through some old photos yesterday. My first galaxy photo is the Andromeda galaxy. It is a beginner must photo object due to it is an easy target. But what I is not realize is that the there’s another near by. That is the M33. It is abit smaller more dimmer. This photo I was aiming to shot the comet and andromeda galaxy together. But then when I proceeded the photo, I saw another fussy object on the top left corner. I was like wow!! I got two galaxies there! Too bad the comet soon to be more like south hemisphere target and I couldn’t capture it anymore. But I am so happy to get to know more celestial objects in the sky.
