How am I already headed out the door again??? It's just a domestic trip this time, but I am flying all the way across the country...to Seattle, Washington, hence the rain boots! Although I've been to Seattle 3 other times & never experienced rain there, the forecast is not looking good for this trip! I think my streak is up. I'm going to Seattle to visit @isabelamcm, her husband Lucas, & their daughter Isla. The last time I was in Seattle was over 2.5 years ago in August 2020 to meet Isla when she was 3 months old. Now she's turning 3 years old in less than 2 months! I can't believe how fast time has flown by, but I'm grateful for video-chatting technology & airplanes, so I can keep up with some of my favorite people! #캐나다생활18일차 #20221222목요일 #USborder 글을 쓰는 사이에 금요일이 되었다 지금 우리는 자동차로 시애틀 가는 중 원래 계획은 금요일 오전에 출발하여 느긋하게 oregon주에서 좀 놀다가 첫 숙박을 할 예정이었다 호텔도예약해두었고 낮에는 꽤 바빴다 우리가 1년 살기로 계약한 집에서 집주인 만나 집 열쇠를 받았고 현재 살고 계시는, 내일 귀국하시는 박사님 가족으로부터는 집에 대한 인수인계를 받았다 내일 미국 여행 떠나기전 우리 짐가방들을 집에다 갖다두고 입주는 12/31에 미리 해도 된다는 허락을 집주인에게 받았다 (계약은 1/1부터) BTW 집주인의 아드님이 경찰이란다👍 한남마트에서 쇼핑 하루 한 끼 정도는 숙소에서 먹을텐데 냄비밥을 해먹을것인가 고민을 거듭했다 에어비앤비에서야 가능하지만 호텔에선 안되니 햇반을 사기로 결정 햇반1상자, 컵밥도 여러 개 샀다 몇 년만에 사보는 햇반인지 제이가 맥도날드 가자고 우겨서 가기 싫지만 갔다 제이와 신랑은 빅맥세트를 나는 랩을 주문했다 빅맥도 랩도 사이즈가 완전 쪼그라든듯🙄 집 앞에서 일 나가는 란트라님과 마주침 밤새 또 눈이 많이 올거라 가급적 여행 자제하라는 뉴스 못 봤냐 하심😂 차라리 오늘 밤 떠나야지 내일 아침엔 아마 차가 움직이지 못할거라 하심 짐 싸고 눈 좀 붙이고 새벽1~2시쯤 출발하기로 결정함 하는 수 없이 우리 짐은 란트라님댁에 맡겨두기로 부탁해놓고 미국여행 짐을 싸기 시작했다 저녁 대충 먹으며 시애틀에 아직 사나? 궁금해하며 원선에게 이메일 보냄 OMG 시애틀 아직 살고 6개월 전 재혼했다고! 원선은 나의 고등학교 절친이다 90년대 미국 유학을 둘이 함께 시작했고 미국에서 1년 같이 살면서 서로에게 상처도 주고 받고 싸우다싸우다 서로 냄비까지 던지며 싸움도 했었다🤣🤣 캐나다 남자와 결혼해 미국에서 살기 시작한게 20년쯤 되었나? 우리가 마지막으로 이메일 주고 받은게 맙소사 2016년 코로나로 아직까지도 두 부부가 재택근무 한다고 함 차라리 빨리 출발해서 원선이네서 자기로 함 보지도 못한 친구 신랑에게 민폐 아닌가 물었더니 마음 따뜻한 남자라고 한다💜 10시반경 출발 us border에는 11시경 도착 Passenger vehicle, nexus/bus, truck 요렇게 3개의 lane이 있는데 순간 우리는 허둥지둥 passenger vehicle 레인으로 잘 들어섬 경찰 앞에 차를 세우니 아~무 말도 없이 손만 내민다 Esta출력한걸 건네니 그제서야 이거 말고 여권🙄 그러더니 뭐라뭐라 했는데 못 알아들음 경찰의 위압적인 표정과 거만한 손짓에 꽤 위축되었음 잠시 후 red triangle 비상등 켜란 소리가 들림 저 앞에 지붕 있는데 바로 아래 주차하고 모두 내려 건물 안으로 들어가 이 종이에 스탬프 받으라고 말하는데 그 딱딱한 말투가 어찌나 위압감이 드는지 내가 영어로 대화할때 웬만함 긴장 안 하는데 완전 쫄음😂 주차 하니까 옆에 있던 다른 경찰이 앞으로 더 바짝 대세요! 여기가 맞나? 하며 어리버리 건물 안으로 들어감 뭐 어디 줄서란 안내판도 없고 각 창구에 앉아있는 경찰들 중 아무도 우리에게 어디로 가라 안내도 안 해주고...늦은 밤이라 사람도 없는데 말이다 보아하니 저쪽에 십여명의 트럭기사님들이 줄 서 있길래 화장실 가는 기사님에게 물어봄(경찰에겐 쫄려서 못 물어보겠음) 나: 실례합니다, 여기 들어오면 전부 저기서 줄서야 하는 건가요? 기사: 잘 모르겠어요 저기 줄 서 있는 사람들은 일반인들이 아니라... 대화를 듣더니 그제서야 경찰 한 명이 자기가 저쪽 창구에서 봐준단다 여행의 목적지가 어디냐$ 시애틀엔 왜 가냐 친구 사는 주소 뭐냐 차 안에 짐 어떤거 가져가냐 주류나 음식 같은것도 있냐 얼마나 있을거냐 마지막으로 미국 간게 언제냐 아들은 미국 가본 적 있냐 이런저런 질문과 답이 오가고 그제서야 긴장 풀림 사진 찍고 지문 등록하고 시애틀 친구네 주소 입력하고... 두 명이 번갈아가며 일처리를 했는데 중간중간 내게 농담도 하심🙄 사람 쫄게 할땐 언제고! 마지막에 6불 지불하란다 카드 긁음 한15분?20분? 걸린 듯 하다 처음에 우리를 쫄게 한 그 경찰이 마지막 관문에서 또 우리를 맞았는데 왠걸? 말투도 상냥 표정도 부드러움 농락 당한 기분이다😂😂 외국인과의 대화가 익숙치 않거나 영어가 많이 서툴거나 또는 자신감이 없는 사람이라면 굉장히 스트레스 받을 듯 하다 #day18inVancouver #headingToSeattle

Moving update: We’re still moving but we’re also still in Wisconsin! 🙈 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2020 is a weird year that’s for sure. Any plans we made for this season have definitely not worked out, including moving in our original time frame. So we are both in Wisconsin. We may still move in Fall or now it may be Winter. Honestly, we have no idea. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What I do know, we’re still moving. I was wearing face masks on planes before it was cool. This is my first time on a plane since the pandemic started, & it's so surreal. It's crazy for me to have not been on a plane since October 2, 2019 since I'm such a travel junkie. That's 10 months of no major travel for me, & the only travel I have done during this time was a small, quick roadtrip to a beach in Florida for my sister's bachelorette this past May! If I had known the pandemic was going to happen, I'd have taken an amazing vacation before it started! To anyone concerned that I'm traveling or judging me right now, I'm doing everything I can to protect myself & others, & the airport is not nearly as busy as normal, so that keeps crowds down. Know that this trip to Seattle, Washington is not for play time (although, we will play some, of course). One of my very best friends had her first baby a couple months ago, & I've waited so long to meet her. We finally decided that, at this rate, if I don't visit now, I won't get to meet her until she's 5 years old! COVID-19 isn't going anywhere, & since no one is this country is keen on actually quarantining to kill this thing off, we just have to learn to live with it & be as safe as we possibly can. So that's what I'm doing. I consider this trip semi-necessary, & I won't be taking any other major trips just for play until it's safer out there.
