I struggle sometimes with the inherent ableism of climbing. I want the mountains to be for everyone at all levels of fitness and ability. I want that as an aging person, as a neurodiverse person, as a person with hidden disabilities and mental health challenges. But I also have to admit that safety demands a certain adherence to fitness reqs, structures and procedures, to a level of cognitive function and awareness... That if I can't accept the structure of an alpine start or move at a certain pace on a glacier, for example, I shouldn't be on a glacier, or I'm a greater risk on a glacier - to myself, my team and anyone who might have to rescue me. I cherish the opportunity to hold sessions in locations that hold significance for my couples. Whether itβs a first-date spot, a proposal location, a family farm, or their favorite spot to watch the sunset, each setting carries its own special meaning. Their connection to the location resonates with me, and I aim to authentically showcase it. For Logan and Courtneyβs engagement session, we ventured to Olympic National Park, a place that holds deep meaning to them. Our backdrop ended up being Crescent Lake, where we were greeted by lush greens, pristine waters, and an awe-inspiring sunset.
Forks was the best place to stay for our adventures in Olympic National Park. It allowed us to stay fairly close to all the different parks within. Today Iβm packing up my car and getting ready to leave for a place Iβve been dreaming of for years. The other day it struck me that the day Iβm leaving to embark on this new and much sought after chapter of my life, is the exact same day that seven years ago I was embarking on an entirely different yet also monumental chapter of my life. But that chapter was not meant to be. What was meant to be forever turned into heartbreak and trauma I work on healing everyday. I believed the promises I was making on that day were being reciprocated by the man who stood before me April 29th in a meadow in Zion. But today April 29th, seven years later Iβm leaving for a place thatβs been calling to my heart long before I said βI Doβ in that meadow. A place Iβve been trying to get to since seeing its lush rainforest and moody beaches splashed across the pages of a Nat Geo magazine. Itβs been a crazy journey to get here. I almost gave up, thinking maybe it really wasnβt meant to be. Itβs not easy leaving the comfort of home, family, a super fun job and some of the most amazing friends/community a person could ask for. But Iβm doing it. Because I know it is meant to be. Iβm supposed to live in the forests of Olympic National park. And so as I draw the parallels of this day, I am blown away with how this is all lining up and how what I thought was my dream seven years ago wasnβt actually what was meant to be. So today I am leaving for the real dream, the one that my authentic self has been pushing me towards. The one where the universe has just been waiting for me to believe I deserve, so it can put all the puzzle pieces into place. For that I will be forever grateful. Day 1 & 2 (of 4) backpacking with my friends, the coast of Olympic National Park. Started at Ozette lake trail head to Cape Alava. Second day, Cape Alava to Cedar creek. Beautiful as expected, but tougher than expected. More boulders and rocks to maneuver through that was difficult, than nice sandy beaches. Had to try and plan for the tides, but still got caught on one of the peninsulas where we had to wait 4 hours for the tide to recede before continuing. Lots of wild lifeβ¦β¦eagles, bears, deer, sea otters, seals, raccoons. Nature did not disappoint! Beautiful Friday sunset π . Introducing the Duckabush Estuary Restoration Project For nearly a century, the Duckabush estuary has suffered from degradation due to a barrier of highway fill, disrupting its ecological link to the surrounding tidelands. This estuary serves as crucial habitat for salmon, other fish, and wildlife, including species protected under the federal Endangered Species Act. The restoration initiative aims to restore the connection between the Duckabush River and adjacent floodplains and wetlands. This will involve alterations to local roads, the construction of an estuary-spanning bridge to elevate Highway 101, and the reconnection of historical channels. Cut Friday and took a three-day weekend backpacking over slippery tide pools and boulders on the Olympic coast, from Rialto Beach past Hole-In-The-Wall and on to Chilean Memorial. Anticipating rain (which we got plenty of later), we were delighted to find a blue sky afternoon when we got to camp, topped off with a beautiful sunset.
