A celestial light show lit up the night sky as the Northern Lights moved across parts of Ireland last night 💫🌙 Those who were lucky to see this rare occurance in Ireland would have been captivated by colours similar to the ones presented in this #IMMACollection work by Anne Madden. This eye catching exploration of the Northern Lights vibrates with colour as yellow, purple and green shapes snake acrosse the piece showing the different layers of light at play in this spectacular physical phenomena. Madden's work, abstract at first glance but generally with a figurative element, regularly carries references to her Irish background as well as reflecting on life and death. What do you call a group of surface-active melon-headed whales🐬? A Pep squad 😂 The melon-headed #whale (Scientific name: Peponocephala electra; a.k.a. Peps) is one of the cetacean species found in the Bohol Sea. It has a rounded melon, no obvious beak, a relatively large dorsal fin and pointed flippers. 🐬 Researchers in the Marine Vertebrate Research & Conservation Unit are using #citizenscience in conjunction with their research to understand more about the resident #bottlenosedolphin pod on England’s #SouthCoast. The pod of approximately 48 individuals is not well understood, and is threatened due to the dolphins’ proximity to the coast and therefore human activity. 🌊 The South Coast is part of the #WesternChannel Important Marine Mammal Area ( #IMMA). IMMAs are defined by the Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force as ‘discrete portions of habitat, important to #marinemammal species, that have the potential to be delineated and managed for #conservation.’ This means they haven’t got the same level as protection as #MarineProtectedAreas may be afforded, but they have been shown to be important and diverse areas for marine mammals. The South Coast Bottlenose Dolphin Consortium (@sc_bottlenosedolphins) was formed to bring together scientists and organisations along the South Coast to develop understanding of this resident group of bottlenose dolphins, so that they can be afforded better protection. 📷 The #SouthCoastBottlenoseDolphinConsortium uses photos from water users to help understand their movements and populations. Individuals can be told apart by the different nicks, notches and cuts in their #dorsalfins. Inspired by a unique collection of hundreds of traditional artifacts from the Kingdom of Kongo. The former Kingdom of Kongo (1300s - 1900s) was a large dominion covering present day Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, and the Congo Republic. The artifacts and artworks share a relational quality. It's been a busy past 4 days for our Bohol Sea Survey Team and we can't believe the expedition is about to end! Sharing here highlights of our day with Risso's dolphins 🐬 They showed up with their usual antics - spyhopping and headstands, resting on the surface in between. The Risso's dolphin's tall dorsal fin, blunt head and heavily scarred bodies make them unmistakable. They are born dark grey and they become more scarred and white as they get older.
