Kotono-ha Noh Vol.3 at Yarai Noh Theater: An Enjoyable Experience for the Visually Impaired I attended "Kotono-ha Noh Vol.3" at Yarai Noh Theater yesterday. This performance, orchestrated by the nonprofit organization Ichino-kai, led by Representative Director Keigo Suzuki, was designed to be accessible for visually impaired individuals. Braille materials were sent out beforehand, allowing those with visual impairments to familiarize themselves with the performance in advance, making the experience more enjoyable and understandable. Those with sight also received translations in contemporary language to facilitate a deeper understanding of the Noh performance. 令和６年４月２８日、北海道開拓の村内にある旧札幌師範武道場にて、北海道開拓の村主催、札幌杖道部会主管による剣道・杖道・居合道を体験する｢開拓の村 三道体験会｣を行いました。 簡単に着られる道着・袴も用意し、着付けて撮影も行い、三道それぞれ盛況でご好評の声を頂きました。 剣道は面の打ち込み、素振り、防具に風船を付け、打ち込ませての風船割りを、杖道は演武を見た後に礼法、基本技と形を数本行い、居合道は演武を見た後に模擬刀での新聞紙切りを体験していただきました。 体験者はゴールデンウィーク前半の中日ということもあり家族連れが多く、小さい子達が目を輝かせながら道着袴を着て竹刀・杖・模擬刀を振り、ご両親が熱心に撮影している姿がよく見られました。大人の体験者は女性が多く、初めて触れる武具と慣れない動きに戸惑いながら、｢難しいけど楽しい！｣と熱心に打ち込んでいました。 体験会は午前１０時から午後３時まで１０サイクル開催され、剣道と杖道は３０数名、居合道は８０名程が体験しました。中には｢旅行で立ち寄ったけど、地元に帰ったら早速始めてみたい｣と仰る方もいて、これを機に三道の競技人口増加に繋がれば幸いです。ご協力頂いた関係者の皆様、本当にありがとうございました。我々も初めての試みでどうなるかと思っておりましたが、皆様のお陰で無事に成功致しました。今回に限らず、今後も開催出来ればと思っております。#北海道開拓の村#三道体験会#剣道#杖道#居合道 #Kendo #Jodo #Iaido

Most of these have been registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage under the category ‘Traditional skills, techniques, and knowledge for the conservation and transmission of wooden architecture in Japan.’ Let's explore these traditional techniques as they are exhibited at the Kigumi Museum. What is Onigawara? Onigawara are a key decorative element in Japanese architecture, known primarily for their placement at the ends of roof ridges. Typically made of tile, they are adorned with faces of ogres or mythical creatures and are situated at the top of the building (the ridge). Historically, onigawara were used as a form of protection, warding off evil spirits and external threats. The use of onigawara dates back to the Asuka period (592-710), with their shapes and designs evolving over time. Initially simple in form, they gradually became more artistic and complex. Particularly from the Muromachi (1336-1573) to the Edo period (1603-1868), onigawara became a symbolic aspect of Japanese architecture, with significant advancements in their crafting techniques. Obviously, ayajutsu techniques performed with insufficient strength and concentration will be ineffective. However, as we mentioned earlier, strength is much more than just exerting muscle power. In fact, muscle strength often neutralizes the Iijutsu student who is performing a powerful cutting technique. From a physical standpoint, te no uchi, the subtleties of the technique, provide much more cutting power than sheer muscle power. But strength goes beyond good technique. The driving force behind a truly powerful technique is largely mental. It comes from creating a focus and intensity of thought, which the Japanese call kihako. Kihaku is a combination of several mental factors, including self-confidence, determination, belief in the cause we are fighting for (shinnen), and all-out commitment. It comes from a relentless determination not to lose. As we detailed in Chapter 2, you're more likely to win if you're determined not to fail instead of trying to win. The Book of Five Rings is essentially a summary of the philosophy (and Way) of Miyamoto Musashi, a Ronin who, during the early Edo period of Japan, established himself as THE premier swordsman in the country. In later years, he would come to be almost revered as Kensei - "sword-saint". While the Book of Five Rings (deeply inspired by Buddhism, from which the Rings are drawn, and by Sun Tzu's The Art of War, which was heavily studied in Japan during Musashi's lifetime) is primarily concerned with lessons of swordsmanship, its principles can be applied to any martial art, to wider (and modern) military strategy, and to life in general. It is a short read, but one that merits careful study; I will likely be returning to it several times. It would be easy to cursorily skim through it and decide that it contained nothing but self-serving platitudes, and outdated ones at that - but if you ponder the import of its paragraphs, you will come upon some important lessons that are well worth internalising. Readers in military service would do well to consider the concept of "Bun Bu Ichi", or "Pen and Sword as One", and the injunction to study other Ways (Farmer, Artisan and Carpenter/Architect) to better understand the Way of Strategy.
