Obr43 uniform (Soviet Union) The "gimnasterka" tunic was in service in the militaries of Russia for a century or more. It first began to appear in the Tsarist Russian Army in the 1870s, and would not be replaced by something more modern until 1969 (although some remained in service after this). Naturally in that time it went through some changes. The Bolsheviks, keen on discarding any elements of the Red Army's uniforms that retained a "Tsarist" feel, got rid of the traditional rank structure and the accompanying insignia. Rank, as it existed in the 1920s, was instead worn on the sleeve. Eventually the Soviets realized that this was no way to run a military, and so the Tsarist-style rank system was reintroduced in 1935, to be worn on the collar tabs. In turn, this insignia was found to be difficult to see in combat, and so shoulder boards were reinstated in full in 1943. The stand-and-fall collar was also removed. At first, officers were the only ones given chest pockets, followed by women in September 1944, and finally all ranks from early 1945 (although pocketless tunics remained in production until 1948). I will confess that I am not particularly skilled when it comes to uniforms like this. However, in consultation with some of my more knowledgeable colleagues (who can chime in if they like, as I don't remember their usernames here), the material used on this uniform is not of wartime manufacture. The buttons and perhaps the shoulder boards have likely also been replaced, as those tend to wear out quickly but are pristine here, unlike the rest of the uniform. However, there is ghosting from the Order of the Red Star - whoever wore it originally was likely a World War II veteran. The shoulder boards on this uniform are from before 1955, at which point they were changed to a solid color. Зачастую эти обсуждения теряют всякий смысл, так как аргументы лежат в разных плоскостях, так конструктивной продвинутости «Пантеры» противопоставляется простота и ремонтопригодность Т-34 или высокая надежность «Шермана». Еще более бессмысленным может показаться обсуждение, мог ли Т-44 занять достойное место в этом кубке конструкторов, «если бы». Тем не менее, вопрос достаточно интересный, попробуем оценить хотя бы в первом приближении, сравнивая основные данные ТТХ. Мне кажется, при таком оценочном подходе, Т-44 это танк, который вполне мог побороться с «Пантерой» за титул лучшего танка Второй мировой войны, или, по крайней мере, вместе с Т-34-85 гордо носить звание «Танка Победы». По лобовому бронированию (корпус/башня, мм) Т-44 (90/120) превосходил не только приблизительно равных по весу Т-34 (45/90) и «Шермана» (51/90), но и «Пантеру» (80/110), которая была в полтора раза тяжелее. В отличие от Т-34 и «Шермана» он во фронтальной проекции выдерживал обстрел 75-мм противотанковой пушкой обр. 40" (РаК 40) с дистанции от 300 м, а с дистанции 700 м и более был неуязвим и для 88-мм орудия KwK 36 танка "Тигр". Если добавить, что и эта фронтальная проекция была у него самой маленькой (Т-44 был на 30 см ниже Т-34 и «Шермана», а по сравнению с «Пантерой» на целых полметра не только ниже, но и уже), защищенность Т-44 можно признать лучшей. ⠀ Справедливости ради, надо сказать, что «Пантера» была тоже не подарок, с дистанции 700 м и более ее верхний лобовой лист тоже не пробивался советскими ЗИС-С-53. Общую картинку портил только большой силуэт и слабость бортов. Вооружение у него было одинаковым с Т-34, 85 мм пушка ЗИС-С-53. Она уступала по противотанковым свойствам и 76 мм пушке М1 «Шермана» и, тем более, несомненно лучшей в этом классе KwK 42 «Пантеры». I attended a 103 year old Division dinner tradition this weekend. I sat next to my husband, one of the few nights out we get together, and some of our dearest friends. All around me were those currently serving And MANY of those that had come before. The youngest service member in attendance (21) received a coin, And the oldest (92). I didn’t really know what to expect with this event, I know I referred to it as a “ball” but it wasn’t. It was a night of camaraderie, A night of deep reflection of where we’ve been as a Nation, And where we’re headed. A night of recalling and recognizing the sacrifices that have been made by so many that were sitting in that room. A night to reassure those veterans in attendance that their service mattered, And that they are NOT forgotten. The keynote speaker was a Lieutenant General Retired. If I could have recorded his entire speech and blasted it out to the American people, oh man, I would have. It was one of the most powerful speeches I have ever heard. We are ONLY free due to the sacrifices of those who came before us. That’s it. We will only remain FREE while we have brave men and women willing to sacrifice their lives to protect it. And you want to know how he began his speech? By thanking and recognizing his wife. He said he would never be where he is or have achieved what he did had it not been for her innumerous selfless sacrifices and her unwavering commitment and support of their marriage and family. I am so proud and honored to run in the same circle as you, Military Spouse. Our sacrifices aren’t all for naught. You ARE seen, even if most of the time it doesn’t seem like it. I see you, Friend🖤🫶🏼 And DAMN! November 23, 1991, Croatian Army commanders plan the next move of their counteroffensive, they meet in Slatina and discuss Operation Papuk-91. Operation Papuk-91, a follow up to Swath-10 (Otkos-10) commenced on November 28, the Croatian Army was supported by the Special Police and deployed on a 35 mile front. The goal was to clear Papuk mountain ranges of SAO troops presence that threatened Croatian gains and strategic roads from Virovitica to Osijek in Slavonia. Also on Nov 28, heavy fighting erupted in the town of Lipik when the YPA managed to defeat the Croatian Army and forced them to retreat to Prekopakra, losing the entire town to the Yugoslav forces. The military defeat in Lipik prompted the 2nd Operational Zone of Bjelovar to begin the immediate planning to reclaim Lipik from the Yugoslav forces as soon as possible in the next few days. In early December 1991, the Croatian forces were reportedly involved in the death of at least 24 Croatian-Serbs in the village of Divoš. In the same timeline, the 123rd Brigade of the Croatian Army (HV) attempted to relief Croatian soldiers from other units in a Papuk base but were ambushed by Yugoslav forces, 11 Croat soldiers were reportedly killed. Morning of December 6, 1991, the Yugoslav Army launch a ground attack at Dubrovnik's Old Town from 2 directions, each attacking group were supported by tanks as they pushed towards Fort Imperial following a heavy artillery bombardment on the Old Town. By 8:00 AM, the YPA stormed the fort and forced the Croatian garrison to retreat deeper into Fort Imperial and requested reinforcements. Maj. Gen. Nojko Marinović ordered Croatian Army artillery to directly attack the fort, danger close for friendly units, then sent a unit of the Special Police to assist the Croat soldiers at Fort Imperial. After hours of fighting, the Yugoslav People's Army withdraws from Fort Imperial at about 2:00 PM. It's unknown how many casualties both sides sustained in the Battle for the fortress. On that day, Sveti Vlaho the first vessel commissioned for the Croatian Navy's volunteer unit Armed Boats Squadron Dubrovnik was sunk by a missile.

Jay R. Vargas received the Medal of Honor for heroic fighting during the Vietnam War from April 30 to May 2, 1968. He was wounded three times but still saved the life of his commanding officer. He requested that his MOH be engraved with his mother's name, M. Sando Vargas. She passed away a few months before he was presented with the medal. German veteran of the Franco-Prussian War and the First World War in his old uniform for a veteran's rally in Germany, 1936. . Different online sources will tell you the story of the caption; that the photographed gentleman is a double-veteran of both the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 and the First World War. However, I question if this is really the case. . There are 44 years between 1870 and 1914. He would have had to been ~16 years old in 1870, which would make him 60 years old in 1914, an extremely old age to be able to enlist - even for the home guard. . Then again, he almost looks too old to have served in the First World War. 1936 was only 22 years after 1914, meaning he would've been 82 years old by the time of this photograph. Perhaps it's just his beard which makes him look older. . Unless the year of 1936 is wrong, and this photograph was actually taken earlier. One source, that of @drakegoodmanofficial, dates this photograph in 1914, and that he was a Franco-Prussian War veteran wearing his grandson's uniform - a soldier of the 69th "7th Rheinisches" Infantry Regiment based in Trier.
