Teuta rose to fame as a rare beauty, and the heir to the throne chose her as his wife and queen. After the death of her husband Agron, she ruled in the name of her minor stepson Pinnes, and at that time the powerful Illyrian state stretched from the left bank of the Neretva to Epirus, encompassing all the islands except Vis. Within a short time Teuta managed to strengthen and consolidate her power, made powerful allies, and continued further the reforms of her husband. She stimulated the economy, promoted the development of Illyrian cities, strengthened the army, and created her own navy, through the creation of Liburnian ships.Teuta managed to expand the borders of her kingdom, after defeating the Greek army and taking Phoenicia, the richest and most important city of Epirus. Not only she controlled the Adriatic Sea, but after her military success, she gained control of Ionian Sea. The people started calling Teuta the “Queen of Seas”. Her political and military empowerment in such a short time, in the region was disturbing to Rome. 🏺Our sites, part II - RISAN🏺 Risan, known in ancient times as Rhizon and Risinum, lies in the Bay of Kotor and is the oldest Illyrian settlement in the area. It was under strong Hellenistic influence from the late 4th century BC. After the fall of the last Illyrian king, it was controlled by Rome and became part of the Empire from the early 1st century. The city is mentioned in several ancient sources and it can be considered certain that Rhizon was an important centre of Hellenized Illyrian culture during the reign of King Agron from the 3rd century BC at the latest. After sporadic excavations in the 20th century, Rhizon has been consistently excavated since 2001 by a team from our Centre and the Montenegrin Monuments Protection Authority. Noteworthy are two parts of the town: Carine, a former village and today’s district name on the right bank of the local river, and Gradina (the castle), a small hill that rises 200 m above Risan and hides mostly medieval and modern ruins. During excavations in the areas of Carine VI and VII, much of the urban layout (insulae) of ancient Rhizon was discovered. In this part of the city there were rather average Hellenistic type houses with many storage rooms. In 2010, a large jug containing treasure was discovered under the floor of one of these rooms: nearly 5,000 coins of “King” Ballaios (βασιλέως Βαλλαίου). This ruler was a mysterious figure not mentioned in any known ancient source. Several campaigns were also dedicated to the local fortress of Gradina. This small castle was built as early as the 10th century. Ulpiana aka Justiniana Secunda. 🇦🇱 Ulpiana, an Illyro-Dardanian city, an early settlement over 2000 years old, but unfortunately fell under the Roman Empire and it is named as a "Roman city" after. Since the 1st century BC, Strabo mentions this city Ulpiana, calling it "the old city". Ulpiana during the 3rd and 4th century has reached its peak of development and had the name Ulpiana Splendissima Municipal. In 518 AD, after the earthquake Justinian I gave a new name to the city: Justiniana Secunda What does it means in Albanian: ULPIANA? "Ana" means "Earth" in the sense of "The Whole - Globe - Earthly", sideless, infinite, Side beyond/Side. We see that the name "Ulipiana" is compound and it can be divided like this: ULPIANA = UL- PI - ANA So we understand simply and clearly that we are dealing with a residential area built in the "field" of the "Lower" country. A "small - low" tree, or "shrub - i/e", this tree from the maple genus, it has brown to red branches, ovate serrated leaves, white to greenish flowers. So the name of this ancient city with great cultural values on the Albanian heritage is of great importance, because it simultaneously proves the ancient Illyrian-Albanian autochthony, but not only that, it speaks Albanian, it is found written in Albanian, engraved on this stone slab as address (AT/res) - Albanian passport. The ruins of this city as well as its underground still hide many mysteries that are waiting to be revealed, but for someone this light blinds your eyes... Tomor or Tomorr is the father of gods and humans in Albanian Mythology. He was/ is also referred to as Baba Tomor ("Father Tomor"). The etymology of Tomor derives from the Illyrian name of mountain Tómaros, from Proto-Indo-European *tomhxes-, "dark". He is seen as an old man with a long white beard flowing down to his belt. According to some scholars deity of Tomor has precedents in the Illyrian times. He is accompanied by two female eagles and the winds are his servants. His consort was a mysterious goddess referred to as Bukura e dheut.
