Namaqua Dwarf Adder (Bitis schneideri) - the smallest adder in the world averaging a mere 20 cm with neonates measuring 11 - 13 cm in length. It inhabits semi-stable vegetated coastal sand dunes in the Namib Desert and Namaqualand. Like Peringuey's Adder it also sidewinds and shuffles into soft sand, often with the eyes exposed. This snake is locally abundant and easily located and is often captured in large numbers by reptile smugglers and exported. Found 3 "limbless dragons" on my first working day after CNY, I supposed that is a good omen to a wildlife-ful year! 🐍🐍🐍 1. Orange-bellied ringneck A species not commonly seen, this was only my second sighting & I was able to ID it immediately from its captivating salmon colour. It is still a young one but slightly bigger than my first encounter, I hope I will get to see an adult soon. 2. Speckle-bellied keelback A very common species to be found on our trail, this species is still very attractive for how pretty it looks. This individual has a truncated tail, most likely cut off on its own to escape from predators. Some snakes like keelbacks are known to deploy caudal autotomy for defence, but their tails don't grow back like geckos do! 3. Keel-bellied whip snake Not a commonly seen species as it is primarily arboreal, but its pattern on body & head make it easy to ID. Mangrove Pit Viper (Trimeresurus purpureomaculatus) Ular Kapak Bakau One month after the beautiful pit viper, I finally got this long awaited species as my 6th pit viper from an unexpected find during night-birding. When we checked out the first snake, it fled the scene & I was not ready. Luckily we were given a second chance as another prettier individual showed up & this time I was ready to prevent it from escaping & we got some cool photos! Knowing how unpredictable & venomous it is, I had to be extremely cautious. It can be very variable ranging from grey, brownish, purplish with whitish flanks & this one we saw was absolutely amazing with greenish colourations.
