#TeachingTuesday with Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology Academy @pftsta Students in Ms. Exnicios’ class just completed a Biology simulation. In the simulation, each student represented an organism in a marine ecosystem. There were producers and 3 levels of consumers, (hytoplankton, shrimp, redfish, and shark.) Each student started with the same number of beans that they held in a paper bag labeled with the type of organism. They were allowed to interact with one another. Every time they interacted, the prey gave beans to the predator, if that was their relationship. All organisms gave off "waste" beans at every interaction, and only producers received 10 fresh beans from a source jar after every interaction. The game was allowed to play out and then the beans were counted at the end, keeping a total count for each of the trophic levels. Afterwards, students made large graphs with a verbal explanation on their group whiteboards. After a brief group discussion, the bar graphs were turned sideways and a trophic pyramid of energy was evident. Students were able to discuss what the beans and jars represented, why there was "wasted" energy, and which levels have the greatest amounts of energy. JP Schools recently held a hiring event for high school seniors. The event was hosted at Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union 60. The booth style setup allowed various companies to display and share information about career and technical skilled opportunities that may be available to students directly out of high school. Many of our JP Schools seniors were offered positions at companies with immediate openings. #TeachingTuesday with Granville T. Woods Elementary School Students in Miss Saige’s kindergarten class are learning with geometric pattern blocks. Students have fun by learning to create geometric images and are then challenged to find the total value of the pattern blocks used to make their images. Katie Gaffney is a Kindergarten teacher at @kellerpenguins Harold Keller Elementary. She has always loved working with children, and is often amazed at the creativity they possess.
