During this miracle, angels staffed the Fatinelli kitchen, baking the bread while St. Zita attended church near San Frediano. Happy feast of St. Gianna!!! Today we celebrated with a full spread of Italian appetizers, homemade gnocchi, alfredo and meatballs, Italian wine, then finished off with chocolate dipped butter cookies and tiramisu. It was quite the feast and all for the beautiful St. Gianna who God worked through letting her inspire so many. Her calm and patient demeanor as a mother is something I strive for. Her loving approach to her young children and her determination to put God first in all things even when it seems difficult all make me want to do the same. Her life was just 40 years and yet her legacy was forever. I pray that I have faith in God’s Providence as she did. Her trust in the Lord was so vast and something to try for. St. Gianna has such beautiful quotes emulating the strength of true marriage, the Church’s involvement and the beauty of the natural family. Her transition to motherhood was equally as wonderful, exemplifying that children are made in God’s image and are a gift to us. Each and every one of them-those who live here where we have a chance to raise them and those who go directly to living with God-are all gifts molded like clay by God’s very hands. She was an advocate for children, a doctor who cared for people whether they could pay or not and maintained a loving relationship with her husband despite them being so far apart much of their marriage. She is truly an inspiration and I am honored to have her name attached to mine in confirmation. Born a twin during the outbreak of the plague in 1347 Italy, St Catherine of Siena was the 23rd of 25 children (you heard me), however only half made it to adulthood. The two most culturally accepted paths for a woman during this time were either marriage or becoming a cloistered nun. Not so keen on either idea St Catherine resisted all proposals of marriage and even cut off her hair, began fasting and wore ragged clothes in order to make herself less appealing (I feel you St Catherine, I too am overwhelmed by marriage proposals...) Catherine's parents eventually realised that all attempts at finding her a husband were futile so allowed her to live as she wished. Following a vision of St Dominic, St Catherine joined the third order of St Dominic as a layperson (blew my mind when I found out she wasn't even a nun) which allowed her to serve with an order while living at home. Following 3 years of isolation and prayer in her home, St Catherine re-entered public life in order to serve the poor and sick. As St Catherine became more involved in the community and politics she began to travel the world calling for a reform of the church. St Catherine was credited in starting a crusade to the Holy Land, fostering peace between Italian states, and her efforts were integral in restoring the Papacy to Rome. St Catherine wrote over 400 letters which were so influential that she would later be declared the only lay Doctor of the Church. St. Catherine allegedly was given the stigmata in 1375 and in 1380 at only 33 years old she became incredibly ill as a result of her extreme fasting. Within weeks she was unable to use her legs, and following a stroke she passed away on April 29.
