The invasive and the native. Same plant different impacts. The first photo is a warbling white eye that is an invasive species and the second is a Hawaii Amakihi on the same plant. The warbling white-eye, introduced to Hawaii from Japan, competes with native birds for food and has become a vector for avian parasites and diseases, adversely affecting native bird populations like the Hawaiian honeycreepers. They also contribute to the spread of invasive plant species through their discarded seeds. After nine years, I am stepping down as Field Supervisor at KFBRP. It was an honor and a privilege to take part in efforts to save the ‘akikiki, though it stings that they dwindled from ~500 wild birds to maybe only 5 during my time with the project. Witnessing the final act of a species in the wild was brutal, like watching a rainbow dissolve into nothingness, where you wonder if it was even really there to begin with. That said, the work was cool and I got to spend time with fantastic people along the way. And I met a woman, fell in love, and have a wonderful little family, and I’m looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life with them. This year, we are celebrating 20 years of the Kaua‘i Forest Bird Recovery Project (KFBRP). The project began in 2003 and was initially focused on the endangered puaiohi, or Small Kaua‘i Thrush. In 2010, KFBRP expanded to include research on two more of Kaua‘i’s endemic songbirds, the ‘akikiki and the ‘akeke‘e, after they were listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Over the years, KFBRP has worked to protect these forest birds and many others through mosquito surveys, rodent suppression, breeding and release programs, research, increased outreach and blessings, and expanding the team. KFBRP's work is essential to helping curb the extinction of our native forest birds. These photos are just some highlights of the work KFBRP has done over the past two decades. Kaua‘i County Council supports mosquito biocontrol to protect honeycreepers with a 6-1 vote! “They are literally dropping like flies before our very eyes,” said Kaua‘i Forest Bird Recovery Project head Lisa Crampton during the council meeting. “We go out one day and the pair that’s laid a nest are gone, and the eggs in the nest are cold. It’s happening so fast. We walk down the trails, and we find ‘apapane are now littering our trails with their corpses. Presented by Bryn Webber, Kaua'i Mosquito Research Coordinator Hawaiian honeycreepers continue to suffer from a wave of extinctions, driven by diseases carried by non-native mosquitoes. These diseases, such as avian malaria, are exacerbated by climate change because mosquitoes carrying avian malaria are moving further upslope into the upper elevation forests - the last refuge of Hawaiian forest birds. Without control or elimination of avian malaria’s vector, the southern house mosquito, several endangered honeycreepers will become extinct within the next one to ten years and the remaining species will continue to decline. The situation is particularly dire on our island of Kaua‘i, where the ‘akikiki has declined from 400 individuals in 2018 to 40 in 2023. The Kaua‘i Forest Bird Recovery Project and Birds Not Mosquitoes, a multi -agency collaboration, are working to mitigate the threat of avian malaria and protect our remaining ‘akikiki from extinction. In this presentation, we will uncover the strategies and innovative conservation tools that we are implementing over the next several years. Throwback to only 3 years ago when I volunteered for @kauaiforestbirds in the high elevation forest of Kauai. Of all birds I got to work with, the Akikiki was probably the one most imperiled, with at the time only about 125 to 250 individuals left in the wild. A small, inconspicuous honeycreeper that would occasionally roam past our camp in the rainforest, quietly foraging and minding its own business. We even had one named Wizz, thanks to the black and yellow bands it was given at some point earlier that year. Little did I know that only 3 years later, the species has dropped to a mere ~40 individuals in the wild, which will all be captured in early 2023 to at least preserve the species in captivity, as they are no longer able to survive in the wild. Centuries of avian malaria, competition with rats, pigs and other birds as well as numerous other smaller threats have finally driven this species to the brink. A sad reality, and one we'll unfortunately see more and more, as we're just at the start of it all. I don't usually wear pink goggles looking at the future of birds, humanity and our planet, and so instead of praying for an unlikely survival of this species and return of it into the wild, I'd like to thank the KFBRP for their endless efforts to at least try in the past few years. According to research shared by @kauaiforestbirds the population was stable around 8,703 individuals, all living above 600m in three distinct regions on Kaua’i in 2020. They feed on insects and nectar from native plants including the ‘ōhi’a, and ōhelo. • • The critically endangered ʻakikiki is one of the rarest birds in the world. They only exist in on Kauaʻi in a very small area. Mosquito born diseases such as avian malaria is the main culprit. Posted @withregram • @kauaiforestbirds Hosting its ninth virtual “Forest Friday” conversation on Friday, February 25th at 4:00 p.m., the Kauaʻi Invasive Species Committee (KISC) and Kauaʻi Forest Bird Recovery Project (KFBRP) will devote an hour-long discussion to the most abundant tree in the forests of Hawaiʻi–ʻōhiʻa lehua. The virtual event will review the role of ʻōhiʻa in the environment, culture, as well as, our watersheds and provide an update on the presence of Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death on Kauaʻi. The event is one of numerous offered as part of Hawaiʻi Invasive Species Awareness Month (HISAM). This year, HISAM is exploring the three wao (or realms) of 1) Akua (upper forests), 2) Kanaka (lower valleys and urban areas), and 3) Kahakai (wetlands, ocean). Kim Steutermann Rogers, ROD Outreach Specialist for KISC, will emphasize the role of ʻōhiʻa in our everyday lives, as well as, provide an update on the presence of Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death on Kauaʻi. Breghan Klein and Kalli Harshman will share details on the work being done in the forest to help save ʻōhiʻa. Klein is a field technician for KISC, and Harshman is a watershed field technician for Kauaʻi Division of Forestry and Wildlife. Kailee Lefebvre, Planner for Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species, will highlight the current legislation proposing to name ʻōhiʻa as the Hawaiʻi State Endemic Tree. This virtual talk story is a unique opportunity to discover what is happening with forest conservation on Kauaʻi. There was an Akikiki we called Luna, the last time I saw him was in May. Yesterday I spent another day searching his territory with no sign of him, and I’m finally admitting to myself that he’s probably gone. He occupied the forested bowls above Forbidden Falls since at least 2017, where he and his mate fledged a dozen young. His mate had already vanished by this past spring. These pictures are some of their nest trees. We name the nests we find, these are the Ohia trees that raised young Akikiki from the Pink, Luna, Mana, Hoku, Kona and Foss nests. I want to believe you’re still out there little buddy, but spending the day alone in your old territory, without you, felt like goodbye.
