Red-Bellied Woodpecker This is a bird that sounds most like a Pokemon to me, but I forgot my pokeball! Sound/Audio 🔉 on to hear how this bird calls. Woodpeckers, being insectivores, are crucial because they prevent the spread of pests. Other species use their nest openings. The winter months are when most woodpeckers stay. Woodpeckers use drumming as a communication tool, mate attraction, and territory assertion. To disperse the force’s shock, they have a thick skull. Sawdust cannot enter their nostrils because of the feathers there. The tongue has a barbed tip and is sticky. Two of their four clawed toes point forward, and the other two point backward. On a particularly gloomy and chilly day in the Pilansburg, we were sitting outside on the porch and all of a sudden our spirits were lifted by a tiny but mighty bird - the Pearl Spotted Owlet! Bee-eaters are truly one of my favourite birds. Their vibrant colors are a joy to see as they dart around, catching bugs kicked up by passing cars. During my visit to Samburu in March, I was blessed to hear the beautiful calls of the White-throated Bee-eater echoing through the air. I was fascinated to observe them building nests in the mounds of dirt piled up by road graders in preparation for the rains. Today's subject, the Chuck-will's-widow, is a particularly captivating example of nature's artistry. These nocturnal birds, named for their distinctive call, are masters of camouflage, blending seamlessly into their surroundings with their mottled brown plumage. Their large eyes and wide gape hint at their nocturnal prowess, allowing them to hunt insects under the cloak of darkness. Chuck-will's-widows inhabit woodlands from the southeastern United States to Central America, spending their days perched motionless on branches or the ground, their camouflage rendering them practically invisible. At dusk, they awaken to their nocturnal symphony, their haunting calls echoing through the night.
