———The whole point of transforming our heart and mind is to find happiness. We all have the natural desire to be happy and the wish to overcome suffering. This is a fact, so we can make it our starting-point. . Before developing this point in more detail, however, let us look very briefly at the nature of experience. Broadly speaking, our experiences fall into two categories. One type of experience is more connected with our bodies, and occurs mainly through our sense organs, while the other type is more related to what can be called “the mental consciousness” or “the mind”. So far as the physical level of experience is concerned, there is not much difference between ourselves and other animal species. Animals, too, have the capacity to feel both pain and well-being. But what perhaps distinguishes us human beings from other forms of life is that we have far more powerful mental experiences in the form of thoughts and emotions. . The fact that there are two broad categories of experience has some interesting implications. Most importantly, if a person’s basic state of mind is serene and calm, then it is possible for this inner peace to overwhelm a painful physical experience. On the other hand, if someone is suffering from depression, anxiety, or any form of emotional distress, then even if he or she happens to be enjoying physical comforts, he will not really be able to experience the happiness that these could bring. So this shows that our state of mind, in terms of our attitudes and emotions, plays a crucial role in shaking the way we experience happiness and suffering. . And if you look at your life as a circle and all it’s aspects (family, finance, relationships, work, among others) as sections of it, you’ll see that if one part is malfunctioning, it will affect the whole. There have been many times in my life when I’ve put far too much emphasis on work and not nearly enough on taking care of me. There’s a huge difference between attending to the needs of your personality (ego) and caring for your true self. Making that distinction can save you a lot of wasted time. This I know for sure. . You’ve got to be in touch with your mind, body, and spirit to live the life you were meant to. When all three are completely engaged, you’re able to fulfill your potential on earth. . It’s a decision you make: to pursue what you were called here to do and not just meander through your days. What you do today creates every tomorrow. . To own the abundant life that’s waiting for you, you’ve got to be willing to do the real work. Not your job. Not your career profile. But heading your spirit, which is whispering it’s greatest desires for you. You’ve got to get silent sometimes to hear it. And check in regularly. You must feed your mind with thoughts and ideas that open you to new possibilities. (When you stop learning, you cease to grow, and subconsciously tell the universe you’ve done it all ~ nothing new for you. So why are you here?). . You can’t pretend that your body will function forever no matter how you treat it. Your body wants to move; it wants to be fed well. If you’re sprinting through life as though it’s a race you have to win, you need to slow down and schedule some rest. Because the truth is, you’ve already won.
