The second Saturday in May is Negro Leagues Day in Maryland! Negro League baseball was profoundly important to the Black community in segregated America. From 1913 until the early 1950s, the Black Sox and Elite Giants - and their many competitors - provided Black Baltimoreans with their own version of the national pastime. Operating with few resources and under difficult circumstances, Black ballplayers offered a skilled and entertaining brand of baseball. These teams and their players were an integral part of Black businesses and culture and remain an important part of the history of Baltimore. I’ve always been a baseball fan, and a bit of a history buff and so back in the day, I was an early reader of Negro League Baseball histories. At the time, there was only one really good work, “Only the Ball Was White”. I wrote a song based on it, and it appeared on my first band’s first record, the eponymous Bucket Number Six. The tune name checked folks like Satchel Paige and Cool Papa Bell, but of course, the beauty of those players and others in the pre-integration years, is, that they played for the passion and the love of the game, while also carving a niche in African-American communities across the nation. As was pointed out, playing for the Kansas City Monarchs was like playing for the New York Yankees. Because of that song, I received a lifetime pass to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, folks would send me Negro League baseball cards and such, and I wound up meeting people working the Negro League Museum in Kansas City, in its early days. Over the years, there has been much more written about those players, they are honored more regularly in Cooperstown, and this museum on 18th & Vine continues its legacy. I managed a quick return trip on a recent pass through Kansas City and was glad to see they are planning to expand. #LeonDay 👑 ⚾, born October 30th, 1916 was an all time great Black American professional baseball pitcher who spent the majority of his career in the Negro leagues. Recognized as one of the most versatile athletes in the World during his prime, #LeonDay could play every single position on the field and often was the starting second baseman or center fielder when he was not on the mound. A right-handed pitcher with a trademark no wind-up delivery, Day excelled at striking batters out, especially with his high-speed fastball. At the same time, he was an exceptional contact hitter, which, combined with speed as a baserunner and his tenacious fielding, helped cement Day as one of the most dynamic players of the era. Debuting in the #NegroLeagues in 1934, Day played with the #BaltimoreBlackSox, #NewarkEagles, and #BaltimoreEliteGiants during his career. In 1937, Day had the best season of his career as a member of the Eagles, finishing with a perfect record of 13–0 and a batting average over .300. Day also played Puerto Rican winter ball in the offseasons. He holds both the Negro and Puerto Rican league records for strikeouts in a game, and appeared in the most East–West All-Star Games. Day's accomplishments were not immediately recognized as opposed to other elite pitchers of the league like Satchel Paige. Nonetheless, Day is considered one of the best pitchers of the Negro leagues, equaling and sometimes surpassing the abilities of his rivals. #BowmanBetty is wondering where the Bowmans went. She’s not as impressed or delighted with my latest pickup as I am. 1978 Laughlin Long Ago Black Stars. The less popular blackface cousin of the 1974 set. As far as I know (I haven’t checked them all), there are only four HOFers in this set. All of them inducted long after this set came out. One of them should be in the Hall but came up short in the 2021 Veterans Committee vote. As with the 1974 set, many of these are first cards for these players from any brand, country, or era. And if you like pop reports, it is believed that Laughlin likely did not print more than 500 of these sets. 😲👍 Researchers have documented most of John Donaldson’s career, which stretched from 1908 to 1940. Published totals from local newspaper accounts covering his 30-plus year career provide a glimpse at his prowess on the diamond. Despite what has been found regarding Donaldson's career, over 170 games that Donaldson pitched in are missing strikeout game totals. Consequently his overall totals are under-reported. Newspaper coverage of Donaldson games reveal 424 wins and 169 losses, 15 ties, and a winning percentage of .697. He also notched 5,221 strikeouts, an ERA of 1.37, and 86 shutouts against all levels of competition. He completed 296 of 322 starts (92%). Donaldson can be credited with 14 no-hitters, two perfect games, and dozens of one-hitters. He also has two 30 strikeout games, 11 games with more than 25 strikeouts (including two back-to-back 25 strikeout games), 30 games with more than 20 strikeouts, 109 games with more than 15 strikeouts, and a total of 203 double digit strikeout games. He was as good or better than Bob Gibson. He was a better fielder, a better hitter, could run like a deer. When he pitched against Satchel, Satchel didn't have an edge. You thought Don Newcombe could pitch. You should have seen Day! One of the best complete athletes I've ever seen.” — A little more on Leon Day: Often described as quiet, soft spoken and modest. He was a right hander who had a deceptive fastball and a sharp curve. He was the opposite of Satchel Paige, but just as good. — Day pitched in six East-West All-Star Games recording 14 strikeouts. — In the 1942 East-West Game, with the West threatening in the seventh inning, the Eagles ace entered the game in relief and shut down the rally retiring the last seven batters of the game, five of them on strikes. — Although his Newark Eagles missed out on the Negro National League pennant that year, Day still had the opportunity to shine in the Negro World Series. Walter Fenner "Buck" Leonard (September 8, 1907 – November 27, 1997) was an American first baseman in Negro league baseball and in the Mexican League. After growing up in North Carolina, he played for the Homestead Grays between 1934 and 1950, batting fourth behind Josh Gibson for many years. The Grays teams of the 1930s and 1940s were considered some of the best teams in Negro league history. Leonard and Gibson are two of only nine players in league history to win multiple batting titles.
