On April 5th, the author’s friend sent him an article called “The Italian Immigrants Who Grew Fig Trees in Unlikely Places.” While reading this article, Chris found out about @theitaliangardenproject , an awesome organization created by Mary Menniti dedicated to archiving, honoring, and preserving the history and tradition of Italian-American gardens and their keepers. The Project recently began focusing on creating a fig tree database to archive fig trees grown and cared for in “unusual places” (i.e. places in the U.S. with colder climates). Chris knew that he had to reach out to Mary, send her a copy of the book, and tell her about Angelo’s garden. After a couple of email exchanges and a phone call, Mary wound up helping Chris to find one of the absolute best ways he could ever honor his grandfather. Mary encouraged Chris to look deeper into the background of Angelo’s garden so they could honor his passion for gardening and his fig tree. Chris reached out to some family members to get more information and did some of his own research to learn more about the history of his grandpop’s (and grandmom’s) ancestry. Now, The Italian Garden Project has officially inducted Angelo Pinto into their “Hall of Honor”. Additionally, they featured Angelo in their Fig Tree Database so that the memory of his tree can be archived and memorialized forever!
