My rating: 3/5 Would I recommend it? For perspective, yes. For writing - not so much. My Review: The book is a collection of translated short stories by Palestinian writers. It's a mixed bag of good and not-so-good writing, hence the three stars. All the stories are set in 2048, a 100 years after the 1948 Palestine war. There's a bunch of SciFi thrown in, with recurring themes of nostalgia, grief, displacement, and Orwellian societies. What's missing - not surprisingly, are stories of eventual peace/happiness. It's almost as if an entire generation can no longer imagine a world where happiness is the norm, and every day is lived with some form of fear or grief. There were a few scattered gems that made the collection worth going over, but overall, I had a hard time getting through the book. Some of the translations didn't help either. The book didn't help me get over my reading slump, I had to pick up another book in between to be able to finish this. #palestine100 #shortstories #palestineshorts #bookreviews #bookreview #translations #bookshelf #bookstagram #bookstagrammer

BOOK REVIEW 🍍🧡 A short, engaging read “Before the Coffee Gets Cold” perfectly blends the magic of time travel with the profoundness of love and loss. Kawaguchi’s storytelling draws readers into the cozy atmosphere of Café Funiculi Funicula, exploring its patrons journeys as they confront their pasts and ponder the fleeting nature of time. The novels final chapter “Mother and Child”, naturally had me crying into my own coffee cup and thinking about my role as a new Mum. With its subtle humour and quiet depth, this novel is an emotional, yet refreshing reminder to appreciate our present before it slips into our past. l’d recommend this to anyone looking to break a reading slump, super refreshing and easy to fall in love with. ❝… Mom didn’t get better. But I will.❝ I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jenette McCurdy 4 ⭐| Memoir | 320 p | Simon & Schuster, 2022 (Read in Libby) Good Choice Award Winner for Best Memoir & Autobiography (2022) ❀ McCurdy hilariously wraps her heartbreaking story through this book. But let me tell you that I wept my tears the whole time out of frustration & the heart-breaking moment of her life. Looking at her life from her perspective, I saw (and I’m glad I did) a new side of the person I often watch on my TV screen–from Sam in iCarly to Sam & Cat ✨ ❝… the world only wants me to be Sam Puckett.❝ Her memoir focused on her life, but mainly her relationship with her late mother & how it impacted her ( ⚠️tw: eating disorder, abusive relationship, manipulation). While each sentence was delivered with a light–almost comedic–style, I felt the other way–it was sad & stressed me out knowing how complicated her life was. While we might get the expectation that she will expose the dark side of working as a child actor in Nickelodeon, this book focuses on so much more than that. It’s about fighting your way to live your own life, learning to let go, knowing your worth, also the friendships & the importance of your surroundings to help you when you’re in need. Oppose to what the title sounds like (which will come as too harsh), I think that McCurdy wants to imply the chance she gladly took to heal herself & to be a better person by reflecting on her mother. It’s not stated that she hated her mother, I feel like she purely loves her mother to the point that she will give anything for her, but it’s time for her to be herself and live by her way. Despite the transition from each chapter that I often felt disconnected from one another, I think that this book is so impactful. I heard that we’d get a lot more connection to McCurdy’s feelings by hearing the audiobook, so I might pick it up later in the library. For those struggling to gain the freedom to live your own way and to the people-pleasers out there, I’d highly recommend this book for you! ❝I want my life to be in my hands. Not an eating disorder’s or a casting director’s or an agent’s or my mom’s. Mine.❝ #ChallengeRL

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ [ 𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀 ] 📖 Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig Characters: Elspeth, Ravyn, Jespyr, Renelm, Ione, and The Nightmare. (BOOK TWO IN THE SHEPHERD KING DUOLOGY) 💭 Now that's how you write a f*cking sequel 🙌🏼 This book was so good 🤌🏻 if you liked the first book, then I'm sure you're going to LOVE this one. I didn't ate. I bloody devoured this book. It gave us more pvos, romance, action, drama, tension, suspension, the plot, the sassy dead king. I loved how the author gave Ravyn, Elm, Elspeth/Nightmare povs. The men in this book would do literally anything for their women. Rewriting the history? (No, they literally did) Sacrifice anything to get their deserves hae? 🥹 Also, I love the conversation between Elspeth, Nightmare, and Rvyan 🤣🤣 I don't want to give anything more away, so I will just say that this book is everything I wanted it to be and MORE. I can't wait to see more from this author 🤍 Would I recommend it? ✨ REVIEW ✨ Historical fiction is perhaps my first love in reading — the combination of universal sentiments and historical contexts make for such moving narratives that highlight our inherent humanness, regardless of time and place. Peach Blossom Spring by @melissafuwriter was precisely that — a family saga spanning generations in a time where family histories and heritages were under the threat of erasure by the Second Sino-Japanese War and then resumption of the Chinese Civil War not long after. Even if this story isn’t my own, the emotion, sentiments and thoughts definitely resonate with me. It is a tale of migration out of necessity, and also out of hope for something better. Such a tale requires a tender treatment to unpack all the characters, their idiosyncrasies, personalities and thoughts. Fu does this well, weaving intricate threads between Meilin, Renshu and Lily, always connecting them to an established heritage, even if they themselves are unaware of it. Yet, its structure is harsh, with the narrative only moving towards the future, leaving the past behind, only to reemerge as memories for later generations. The characters are however, accompanied by age-old Chinese folktales, providing solace and wisdom at various turning points that they face. The most memorable one of the folktales is the one on the peach blossom spring, which was employed as a parallel to the realities the characters faced. The sacrifice for bliss, and whether that sacrifice was worth it at all. It evoked a bag of emotions for me while reading. Heartbroken with the consequences of war, rejoicing at little moments of peace, profound sadness and distraught at the sacrifices made and a sense of serenity once I turned the final page. The book made me revisit old wounds and gave me new perspectives on my own story, family and heritage. An absolutely beautiful read! “Angels in Your Presence” is an enriching and thought-provoking book that brilliantly intertwines Islamic teachings with everyday experiences through the lens of angelic interactions with us and with Allah عز وجل. This book is full of hadiths that I just knew about angels and how Allah عز وجل gives us so much blessings through the presence of the angels around us. This compelling read is structured in short, concise chapters, making complex religious concepts both accessible and engaging. “Angels in Your Presence” does more than just recount stories; it invites readers to recognize and reflect on the subtle signs of angelic guidance in their own lives. With each chapter, the Ust. Omar gently guides the reader towards a greater awareness of the interconnectedness of creation as seen through the teachings of Islam, fostering a deeper spiritual awareness and a renewed faith in Allah عز وجل. A very heartwarming book but also full of knowledge that this book will motivate us to be a better person and to make our worship better whenever we’re facing Allah عز وجل. I’m glad that Allah عز وجل made me read this book. Such a life-changing one. Alhamdulillah 🫶🏻 Read this if: You want to know new knowledge about the angels and you like Omar Suleiman’s teachings. ⭐️ 5.0/5.0 #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #bookreviews #bookshelf #books #bookcommunity #reading #readers #quotestoliveby #inspiration #bookinspirations #nonfiction #book #selfdevelopment #selfhelp #psychology #fictionbook #book #review #bookofinstagram

Happy Sunday!!! A Murder in Time by Julie McElwain ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Kendra Donovan is a rising FBI agent, until she is betrayed by a team member. In her need for revenge, she accidentally travels back in time to 1815. While adapting to the time period, a body is found in the lake. Finding a purpose to her bizarre situation, Kendra is forced to solve the murder without her 21st century tools. This story combines fantasy, mystery and historical fiction. Positives: * Kendra’s reaction to travelling back in time feels very real. She questions if it is all in her mind or if it’s actually happened * The story is fun, engaging and a compulsive read * Kendra does not instantly develop the skills to thrive as a ladies maid in 1815 and struggles her way through * The mystery itself is compelling and kept me guessing Not quite right: * Kendra is accepted as knowledgeable and allowed to take control of the investigation. This felt very abnormal, especially, given the time period, she is a servant, and female. * While the characters questioned some of Kendra’s language, overall there was a very modern feel to the language used #book #books #bookreview #minibookreview #bookreviewer #bookreviews #bookstack #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookish #bookishflatlay #bookishflatlays #reader #bookreader #reading #minireview #amurderintime #kendradonovan

Why choose. Spice. Amazing plot with twists and secrets to be figured out. My favorite kind of book. Lily is so sweet but also a spitfire. Trying to work her way up and have all her dreams come true but her past is a huge mystery. All the MMCs are so hot and possessive. Very obsessed with Lily. The spice is definitely spicing. I loved the way they all worked through their own problems to become better for eachother. #bookstagram #bookreviews #sadiekincaid

2.5/5🌟! Catherine wakes up one morning to find her husband is gone. Originally she thinks that he went for his morning run, but then she finds his running shoes in the house and all of his belongings are still there except for him. Catherine thinks something terrible has happened to him, but in reality Simon has ran away from his family and his troubled past. 25 years later after living with a new identity across the world, he comes back to tell Catherine the truth as to why he fled. I wanted to like this book. The beginning started so well and had me invested but then it just dragggggged. I wanted to DNF it but I had high hopes that something great would happen but nothing ever did. The storyline wasn’t very believable and kind of ridiculous. #2GirlsBookClub #BookClub #BookReviews #KindleUnlimited #GoodReads #JohnMarrs

This is a story of war and family. I went into this book thinking that it would be full of cool, spy stuff. That wasn't what I found. It is about a family ripped apart by war. The remaining members crumble under the weight of their losses. When the lost come home, the family and home they knew is gone. A woman's past has led to the destruction of her family, and she loses the best things in her life. Jealousy, betrayal, and heartache are throughout this touching story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #bookreviews

That is until Otto Sumpf the grouchy taciturn toad turns up dead and Vera Vixen whom is the town’s cunning foxy reporter has to solve this crime before another woodland creature suffers the same fate. Review I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. Juneau Black will have your imagination running wild wanting to solve this crime yourself. Her descriptions of the town and each and every single one of the characters is simply amazing and very detailed. I absolutely loved the fact that Shady Hollow had its own bookshop. Against the unforgiving landscape of a hospital, I fell in love with a mischievous, sun-eyed boy who became my only joy in that desolate place. That’s what made it all the more soul-crushing when he committed suicide in front of me. Since then, I’ve sworn never to love anyone again. With three exceptions: My friends, Sony, Neo, and Coeur, a little gang of rebellious, dying kids. Sony leads the charge with the air of freedom and only one lung to breathe it. Neo, a bad-tempered and wheel-chaired writer, keeps track of our great deeds from stealing to terrorizing our nurse. Coeur is the beautiful boy, the muscle, the gentle giant with a failing heart. Before death inevitably knocks down our doors, my thieves and I have one last heist planned. A great escape that will take us far from abusive parents, crippling loss, and the realities of our diseases. So what happens when someone else walks through the door? What happens when a girl joins our party and renders me speechless with her mischievous smile? What happens when she has suns in her eyes, and as terrified as I am to lose again, I start to fall? #bookreview #bookstagram #booklover #books #bookstagrammer #bookworm #book #booknerd #bookish #bookrecommendations #reading #bookaddict #bibliophile #booksofinstagram #readersofinstagram #booksbooksbooks #bookblogger #bookcommunity #bookshelf #bookaholic #bookphotography #read #bookreviewer #igreads #booklove #goodreads #bookclub #reader #bookreviews #bookblog

9/40. The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. 3 ⭐️ I'M BACK! I've been in quite the reading slump for the last couple of months, but I'm super excited to catch up on my challenge. And I've finally sunk my teeth into this YA paranormal classic. Overall, it was 'just ok' to me. The writing style was gorgeous, though it had a lot of tautology. The first half of the book was a lot of vibesss and I spent a lot of time wondering why anyone was working together or searching for anything. The premise of the book "the boy Blue Sargent kisses is her true love and will die" felt a lot like a missed Chekov's gun opportunity. An interesting plot point that was included as if it would be significant and is later forgotten. Otherwise, it was very atmospheric with deeply complex characters and plenty of mystery. The book follows psychic's daughter, Blue and her friendship with four privileged boys from a prep school dubbed Aglionby, who are the eponymous Raven Boys. At a young age, Blue is told that she'll kill her true love with a kiss. When she learns the identity of her 'true love', she becomes drawn to him and his posse of friends. Lending her psychic expertise, Blue helps the Raven Boys with their own secret mission involving ley lines, ghosts and forgotten kings. #theravenboys #bluesargent #maggiestiefvater #bookreviews

✨The Art of Laziness (Part 3)✨ A comfort zone is defined as a place, situation, or level where someone feels confident and comfortable. . Why is your comfort zone the most dangerous place to be? ⬇️ The thing about living in your comfort zone is that it's easy to get complacent. That's dangerous because while you camp out in your “safe space,” the world around you is changing. And eventually, those outside forces can disrupt the “safety” that exists in your comfort zone. . Points that help you get out of your comfort zone and stop procrastination 1. Keep it simple; do something new and keep it as simple as possible. 2. Start to think a little bit differently; the same action will lead to the same result. Use different actions, and you'll get different results. 3. Set clear goals; be very clear about what exactly you want to achieve. 4. Write down your goals; visualise them, and it will be easy to see and be motivated towards them. 5. You'll regret it later. You'll feel regret in the future if you choose to procrastinate now. 6. Think long-term; your present action will affect our future. 7. Take risk; Taking risk is scary, but not taking risks is even scarier. 8. Ni Good, No Bad; Bad things that happen will change the trajectory of life, so it isn't actually bad. . "A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there." - Unknown . Follow for Part 4 onwards. More interesting and informative chapters are coming. 🔹Book Review🔹 Title: Sergeant Rex Author: Mike Dowling This book is about a Marine and his MWD (military working dog) and their deployment to Iraq. They were part of the first couple of MWD teams sent to Iraq. The first to be in combat since Vietnam. They were the “Guinea pigs” of modern combat. A lot of what they did in Iraq really had no base and just kind of happened on the fly. They figured out what worked and what didn’t work and gave feedback for future teams. I’ve never read a book about a MWD and this was so so good! It shows you a side of war you don’t really think about much but deserves more media. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the Marine and his dog and all they accomplished during their deployment. Another highly recommended war memoir! New review at: https://www.joannamarshwriter.com/book-reviews Libby doesn’t believe she is truly seen by others until the day her understudy role allows her to take centre stage. Although she appears cool, calm and collected, no one, not even Ella her best friend, knows about the negative internal monologue that is constantly holding Libby back. #bookreview #bookstagram #booklover #bookworm #books #bookstagrammer #booknerd #bookish #book #bookaddict #bibliophile #booksofinstagram #reading #readersofinstagram #bookblogger #bookrecommendations #bookcommunity #bookaholic #bookshelf #read #goodreads #bookreviewer #igreads #bookclub #booklove #bookreviews #reader #wakefieldpress

New review at https://www.joannamarshwriter.com/book-reviews Roland’s wife mysteriously disappears, leaving only a note ‘Don’t try to find me.’ and ‘I’ve been living the wrong life.’ Ian McEwan writes a captivating and at times, bizarre tale. Like his other work, McEwan’s ideas are unique yet believable, and sweep you into a saga of love, life and family. #bookreview #bookstagram #booklover #bookworm #books #bookstagrammer #booknerd #bookish #book #bookaddict #bibliophile #booksofinstagram #reading #readersofinstagram #bookblogger #bookrecommendations #bookcommunity #bookaholic #bookshelf #read #goodreads #bookreviewer #igreads #bookclub #booklove #bookreviews #reader

Hi Everyone! 👋 Happy Saturday!!!💗 ~🌷𝓜𝓲𝓷𝓲 𝓑𝓸𝓸𝓴 𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀𝓼🌷~ Q: What books are you hoping to finish before the end of the month? I still have a few books that I am hoping to get through for the month so hopefully I can finish them! Last month I reread Divine Rivals (4⭐️) and read Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross (3.5⭐️)! Loved my reread of Divine Rivals I think I may have enjoyed the book even more this time around than before and I loved getting to see some of the parts I had missed or forgotten about! I did enjoy the second book as much as the first. The big change from a very romance heavy to a more information and magic heavy story was pretty drastic and it took me a good chunk of the book to get into it but I did end up enjoy where the story went in the end! Definitely worth the read!❤️ • #bookreviews #bookreviewersofinstagram #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #bookblogging #minibookreview #booksbooksbooks #booksandtrees #booksandbotanicals #booksoutside #booksoutdoors #readingoutside #divinerivals #ruthlessvows #rebeccaross #fantasybooks #romancebooks #romantasy #historicalfiction #booksaremagic #bookphotography #bookishlove #bookfeatures #readerslife #bookcommunity #bookstagrammers #readingaddict #alwaysreading #readingupdate #prettybookcovers

Mountain Made of Glass by Scarlett St. Clair Truth be told, I'm not the biggest fan of Beauty of the Beast. Therefore, I was hesitant to read this when I found out this was a retelling of the classic story. HOWEVER, I liked this book! I binge read it in one night because it kept my attention with its dark elements and plot twists. So I had to recommend it as a fan of Scarlett St. Clair✨️ #booklover #bookreviews #bookstagram #bibliophile #reader #bookish #booknerd #readercontent #bookworm #bookaddict #reader #bookrecommendations #bookobsessed #fantasy #fantasybooks #scarlettstclairbooks #scarlettstclair #darkfantasy #bookgram

✨️Indie Author spotlight ✨️ Meet @stephaniembraun I had the wonderful opportunity to chat a bit with Ms. Braun during a local indie store book event. She is truly a storyteller living in a mundane world. Her debut novel is set in the background of the Victorian era. A highstakes novel with themes of found family, strong bonds and the meaning of teamwork, it is a debut not to miss. I will probably wait until an audiobook can be secured for this book before I start. I have a feeling this audiobook would be fire with all that action and danger. 🌹Book Review💌 To Sir Philip with Love by @juliaquinnauthor My Rating - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Spice Level - 🌶🌶🌶 Tropes- Pen-pals to Lovers. Slow Burn. Independent FMC. "Outsider" MMC. Apart of Series but can stand alone. This is my favorite Bridgerton thus far.. I should've expected it with Eloise truly being my favorite, a 10/10 and an iconic unapologetic queen from the start. And I feel her character was the easiest and most natural to not only give depth of falling in love how she did but come to motherhood as well. Philip was also a breathe of fresh air away from the Ton men because, full offense, they drive me kind of nuts. And who doesnt love a planty botanist king. I think Miss Quinn does an excellent job touching on very serious topics and not exploit something people really deal with all while still keeping the story entertaining and on era. The second epilogue being from Amanda's perspective was a great way to tie everything together while catching us up with what happened previously. I'm very curious where Netflix goes with this as one does when anything gets turned into a show but first we gotta get through Penelope and Colin!

Book #54 of 2024! ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 Well, that was, that was relatively smutty. The FREQUENCY. DO THEY EVER STOP??? 😂 Listen, I’ve always found the ACOTAR series pretty tame. But Sarah really went for it this time. Was I clutching my pearls? No. But was I asking how they had the energy to bang all the time during all that training? Yes. Yes I was. Also, Nesta being besties with the Casita from Encanto was not something I had on my bingo card but, I didn’t hate it! Overall, I liked it. I loved the sisterhood. The badass women, the camaraderie. Chefs kiss! Wasn’t my favorite and my usual criticisms still apply. If I had to read “such as” ONE MORE TIME. ❓Doing anything fun this weekend? City of Trees, City of Shadows - Rachel L. Ertassi 📕37/90 ⭐3.25 52 Book Club Challenge Prompt: None. ➡️ for Synposis This is a thriller from a local author set in the beautiful city of Sacramento. Honestly, the setting is what interested me the most. I feel like a lot of books are set in California, but not many in Sacramento. It was fun to go, I had a class in that building, I've been to that Round Table, and I love Ace of Spades. The book has a lot of potential. While the POV transitions were sometimes abrupt and jarring, I enjoyed the multiple POVs because they kept me guessing and re-evaluating my predictions. I did not accurately guess the ending, but I was pretty close. Hehe. The book was mostly chugging along at an even pace for the majority of the book. But, the last 25% of the book had me on the edge of my seat, that's for sure. I like the Type 1 Diabetes representation. I don't think I've read a book with a main character who has diabetes, so that was very interesting and gave me a new perspective. I think this is her first book and it definitely reads like that. But, you know what? I'd be interested to read more from her. 🏷️ #LocalAuthors #SacramentoAuthors #SacramentoBooks #BookReview #BookReviews #CityofTreesCityofShadows #ThrillerBooks #MultiplePOV #WelcometoSacramento #Type1Diabetes #MidtownSacramento #SacState

Hello Stranger Rating: 4 out 5 ⭐️ This book is witty, romantic, and hilarious. It’s giving us hot veterinarian, bowling-jacket wearing neighbor (literally has it on all the time), Sadie’s doggie sidekick, andddddd it’s even giving us evil stepsister vibes. Katherine Center brings you an amazing main character that you just cannot help but relate to at some level. Sadie Montgomery is a struggling artist that gets nominated as a finalist in a national portrait competition. Unfortunately, the night of her big news, she gets into an accident that has caused her to not see faces. Forced to regroup and try new tactics for this completion, Sadie is led on a journey that helps her to flourish and blossom. Rekindling relationships from her past and with Family. This story takes us on a journey of love and finding one’s self. I have truly enjoyed this book. It is a fun, short read for anyone looking for something uplifting and entertaining, I highly recommend! Book 20 of 2024 complete! This was my original 2024 goal, but it looks like we'll be setting a new goal! 😍 A Beautiful Wedding ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Part 3 of the series. This is a novella, so it's much shorter than the other 2, but so much happened in that short time. It's written the way I prefer. Each characters point of view takes turns vs. the first two being just Abby or just Travis' point of view. It really closed Travis & Abby's story well. I mean, I didn't get more of those last 2 pages from book two, but the deep dive we did take was beautifully written. There are several more books that spin off from this series, but for now, I think I'll move on to another book. I'll probably come back and dive into the Maddox Brothers later. . . . . . . . . #bookreview #bookstagram #booklover #books #bookstagrammer #bookworm #book #booknerd #bookish #bookrecommendations #reading #bookaddict #booksofinstagram #readersofinstagram #booksbooksbooks #bookblogger #bookcommunity #bookshelf #bookaholic #read #bookreviewer #igreads #booklove #goodreads #bookclub #reader #bookreviews #bookblog

Reading update ☀️ My year of Sanderson continues! I have finally picked up Rhythm of War after a little break after Oathbringer. I wanted to space out the series a little more as Wind and Truth isn’t out until December but I couldn’t wait any longer, I needed to continue. I am a little over halfway and WOW this is such a good book. From what I have seen this is a lot of readers least favourite in the series but not for me at the moment, I am flying through it. We’ll see what my opinion is when I am finished 😂 The journey through the Cosmere has honestly been my favourite reading experience to date and I plan to have all the full length novels completed next month as I am also halfway through Mistborn era 2! 🔎 Review Time! @emilyhenrywrites @berkleypub My Rating: 🌟 4/5 👀Read if you like: Enemies to Lovers Small Town Settings (My fav! NC 😍) Sisterly Bonds One summer. Two rivals. A plot twist they didn't see coming.... If Nora knows she’s not an ideal heroine, Charlie knows he’s nobody’s hero, but as they are thrown together again and again—in a series of coincidences no editor worth their salt would allow—what they discover might just unravel the carefully crafted stories they’ve written about themselves. 🔎 My review I loved this book! From the start to the end, I was attached to Nora and Libby's relationship and when Charlie is thrown into the story I was getting Hallmark vibes. I personally love books that are featured in small towns and even better when they are in NC (Where I'm from) If you are looking for a cute book that also is based on books (writing, editing, bookstore) then I would definitely recommend! #books #bookreviews #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #bookobsessed #romance #romancebooks #emilyhenry #berkleypublishing #booklover

The Centre by Ayesha Manazir Siddiqi Synopsis: Anisa Ellahi dreams of being a translator of “great works of literature,” but mostly spends her days subtitling Bollywood movies and living off her parents’ generous allowance. Adding to her growing sense of inadequacy, her mediocre white boyfriend, Adam, has successfully leveraged his savant-level aptitude for languages into an enviable career. But when Adam learns to speak Urdu practically overnight, Anisa forces him to reveal his secret. Adam begrudgingly tells her about The Centre, an elite, invite-only program that guarantees complete fluency in any language, in just ten days. This sounds, to Anisa, like a step toward the life she’s always wanted. Stripped of her belongings and all contact with the outside world, she enrolls and undergoes The Centre’s strange and rigorous processes. But as Anisa enmeshes herself further within the organization, seduced by all that it’s made possible, she soon realizes the hidden cost of its services. My Take: ⭐️⭐️ Not everything you are going to read is going to be a home run. This is an example of that and that is ok. It doesn’t take away from the reading experience, which was bonkers. 🤷‍♀️ #bookinstagram #bookinsta #booksbooksbooks #books #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #bookreview #bookreviews #thriller #fiction

Puppy Brain by Kerry Nichols Publication date April 30, 2024 Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Everyone contemplating getting a dog, puppy or adult, should read this book. Kerry Nichols, formerly an attorney, now a breeder of golden retrievers, has developed an approach that results in a rewarding beneficial relationship with dogs, rather than one based on rote obedience. Nichols bases her advice on the science of brain development and the premise that dogs are not people, nor teddy bears, nor pet rocks: "We must remember that they are not human. We must give them permission to be a different species and not only allow them to behave accordingly but modify our behavior accordingly." She is an advocate for dogs and does not espouse outdated training methods based on pain, fear or dominance theory. I enjoyed the descriptions of the science of brain elasticity in puppies and how early experiences can influence dogs for years to come. Nichols provides the practical advice needed to raise a happy, confident, well socialized dog and to develop the mindset needed to accomplish this goal. Puppy Brain is well written, meticulously researched and provides the reader with the benefit of the author's years of experience owning and raising dogs. I wanted to love this one. I was in the mood for a lighter read, and this one sounded like a cute mystery. But it was not for me. The synopsis is fun - a bestselling writer, Eleanor Dash, goes on a press tour in Italy for the latest book in her mystery series. The star of her series, Connor, is also her friend Connor in real life and she wants him out of the books and out of her life. But then it seems someone actually wants to kill him? Then of course it’s time for Eleanor to solve the mystery. What I liked? The plot idea was great, and the writing was really clever and witty. What I didn’t like? It was such a confusing read. It was hard to keep track of all of the characters and flashbacks, and I found myself rereading sections over and over trying to place when they happened and who the author was referring to. What I *really* didn’t like? The footnotes! They were incredibly distracting (especially in digital arc format because they didn’t line up properly, which is no fault of the author and would resolve itself in a published copy) and I don’t feel like they added enough to the story to warrant having *that* many. Thank you @netgalley for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. This book publishes on April 30!

✨ REVIEW ✨ If life had any coherence to it, we wouldn’t have novels like A Little Luck, eloquently articulating the interstitial moments where luck, chance, or fate intervenes. Coloured with carefully crafted sentences, details that punctuate the page and evocative prose that lingers from chapter to chapter, A Little Luck explores life in all that it encompasses through the lens of tragedy. We follow the protagonist as she returns to her native Argentina, a country, a home that she fled after a tragic incident—recollecting memories in full, re-experiencing dulling yet seemingly irremediable pains. With her return, she finds herself with the opportunity to finally confront all that happened and all that she lost. And it is catalytic, definitive moments like these that we get to see the magic of simply having a little luck. At the heart of this captivating set-up is an intimate and utterly uncompromising look at the protagonist in her own words—as a girl, a woman, a daughter, a wife, a mother, a companion, a teacher and an individual. Her thoughts, feelings, reflections, decisions and reasons all laid bare, vulnerable to the scrutiny of anyone reading, even herself. Beautiful ruminations on life, luck, pain, loss, loneliness, sadness and happiness coupled with her experiences of motherhood, her grasp on disconnected families and her attempts to wrestle her individuality against an insular community. Her inner conflict on her return is so palpable, with every moment filled with the reluctance and hesitance that you’d expect when you’re confronting a past you want to forget but also the desire to have closure, to have your pain and suffering acknowledged. All of this conceived a character with so much depth, unabashed with her truths that are contextualised by her circumstances. It left me empathising with her every step of her journey, even with the decisions I didn’t agree with, and with the reasons that were flawed. I understood them. And that is perhaps the strength of Piñeiro’s writing and Riddle’s translation—it made me understand, feel heartbreak and empathy for someone I only knew in words and on pages. CONTINUED ⬇️
