Yesterday morning a beautiful baby made it into mama’s arms. This little nugget was not little at all and had big plans of their own! 🌱 A wise midwife once said, “This is two people’s journey. You can do all the right things but your baby has their own story too.” This quote stuck with me for this birth and I continued to repeat it to mama and papa. 🌱 Sometimes we wait and wait and then wait some more. We change our plans and then change them again. Sometimes, we have quite literally the opposite of what we had hoped for. In the end though, being treated with respect and dignity through the process is imperative. The staff over at Spring Valley was top notch at making this family a priority. 🌱 This gorgeous 9 pound 12oz 22 inch long baby with a full head of curls made their way out complaining and letting us know how the official eviction notice was not in their plan. The rolls, the cheeks, and the textbook ideal breastfeeding latch had me swooning. We all shared tears and talked about the past few days with a smile on our faces. Birth is beautiful no matter how it happens! 🌱 I know this is long winded but I have to brag a bit on this mama and papa. The love they share, the laughs endured, the kisses, the cuddles, the understanding, and genuine bond they share made my heart sing. The process of birth has both parents at their most vulnerable and it’s magic to witness them work through together. This morning a beautiful little babe with the thickest head of hair I’ve ever seen, made it into Mama’s arms 🌱 This mama and papa worked hard together at home riding each surge as they presented. Her surges came on quickly making for an entirely different birth experience than with her previous baby. 🌱 Once they moved to their place of birth it was apparent this little nugget was in a little bit of a funky position. Mama opted for some rest which was a fantastic choice for her having been up for many hours. Little did we know know this cutie had other plans. There was zero rest in the cards for mama. 🌱 After a roller coaster of plan changes and then back to original plans, this baby came out ready to meet the world. Papa was the best support, loving and sweet every step of the way. Mama was calm and focused on her job at hand. She sure made it look easy! I had to make an extra special graphic today for the newest little Texan who arrived this afternoon. This adorable little rascal made it into mama and papas arms which was so fun to witness. 🌱 I have to admit, this particular client is a friend of mine and someone I was so excited to support. She wasn’t receiving the care she deserved so she quite literally crossed an ocean to birth where she felt safe. Talk about perseverance and strength. It’s never easy to go against the grain and to fight for what’s right for your family. I will tell you though, it’s always worth it! 🌱 When I was asked to support their growing family here in Vegas I jumped at the opportunity. Mama worked so hard and trusted the process. Papa was a steady support and kept the mood light. It was beautiful to witness their love and friendship. This morning just before 1am a beautiful baby made it into Mama’s arms. 🌱 Let me tell you something about this mama and papa, they are strong. They knew what they wanted and advocated from the beginning. They went past their estimated date, tried all the things to get labor going, and finally set the scene of comfort together at their birth place. 🌱 Sometimes plans change. Then they change again. And sometimes, even again. After tons of pivoting and ultimately a decision of a different type of birth than planned, this little nugget arrived. With all the dramatics you’d expect of a main character too lol! 🌱 Mama made informed choices with her husband as they were the ultimate team. His love and support of her was beautiful to see. Yesterday evening a sweet little love bird made it into mamas arms! 🌱 What really made me fall in love with this family was listening to their goals and how they wanted to normalize natural birth in their family. They shared with me that many family members were curious as to why they chose the birth center and it was so fun to see them educate themselves on the benefits. 🌱 This mom rocked it! She progressed beautifully with a sense of humor and her husband by her side. They were so sweet working together one surge at a time. The hugs, kisses, hand holding, and sweetness melted my heart. 🌱 After a longer active and pushing stage than they anticipated, this little birdie came out with a hand waving hello to all of us. Baby was adorable with the chubbiest cheeks and vocal complaints to the room. 🌱 I was so proud of this family but what brought me to tears was when she FaceTimed her mama and said, “I had a baby mama!” The pride gave me goosebumps and made me burst into tears. This morning a beautiful baby made it into Mama’s arms. 🌱 This lovely family came to me 10 weeks ago looking for some extra support for their upcoming birth. This mama had a previous cesarean and wanted to try for a vaginal birth this go around. She had done her research and wanted every possible tool at hand including a doula! 🌱 After some conversations to clear up any confusion, myths, fears, or questions both Mama and Papa may have had, we got to it! This family put in the work to educate themselves on risks vs benefits, the normalcy of birth, and how to labor at home as long as possible. 🌱 Papa was a steady support and made sure her every need was met. He learned with her and took charge to help put a plan into action. His calm presence was everything she needed through pregnancy and birth. 🌱 Labor began at night like most labors do and we communicated by phone, calming fears, talking about what was normal, and how to cope. After an early morning trip to the hospital and an admission, baby was born about 5 hours later. 🌱 This beautiful couple laughed, cried, and celebrated a successful vaginal birth together. What a small world right? Unfortunately, I knew their due date would be during our summer vacation to the mountains. I knew I’d have to miss it but that we could work together prenatally and postpartum. I arranged for a backup and we had a plan moving forward. Secretly and selfishly I hoped her body would hold out for when I returned but babies come when they want. As I was packing my bags last night, labor began. 🌱 This mama was so focused and calm! Her spirits were high and positive. She had all the confidence she needed in her body and baby. She worked on a positive headspace for months and it showed. While I wasn’t there, my lovely friend and fellow doula Regina was sending me updates as she supported them. Her labor moved quickly and she took it one wave at a time. This mama rocked an all natural hospital birth! I can only imagine how beautiful of a team they were. Regina is one of the best doulas I have ever met. Her heart is beautiful! 🌱 Even though I wasn’t there I can confidently say, Papa was a great and loving support for mama. He has the sweetest soul and I could see how proud he was of them in his smile when receiving photos first thing this morning. It was wonderful to wake up to so many photos of the newest family of 3 before hitting the road. 🌱 The birth space is so sacred and so special, thank you for allowing me to send someone in my place and for trusting us. Story Time 📕 When I decided to become a doula in 2018 I was living in England where my husband was stationed in the Air Force. I knew postpartum support would be an area I had to focus on especially living overseas in a military community. Postpartum Pastry Hour was born there and it took a minute for people to trust what I was bringing to the table. 🌱 After a year we had so many parents joining with 19 showing up for the biggest Pastry Hour to date. Then…. COVID hit. We were locked down, tried to have zoom nights, and became isolated. I knew when I moved to Vegas we had to get it going again. It took time for this community to trust me and to show up and be vulnerable with people they don’t know in the hardest season of their lives, but they did. 🌱 When I met Dr. Adrienne at @vegaschiro she was immediately on board with letting me use her office for PPH. In addition to that she was ready to help push it forward to where we are today. Filling the gaps in the community and showing new parents they have a safe place. 🌱 On Saturday we had our first ever PAID event that supported all moms of any season in the community. Proceeds from the brunch are going to Postpartum Support International which makes my heart sing. 🌱 If you are still reading here’s where it gets even sweeter… The ladies in this photo were with me in England. All of us were stationed at the same base at the same time. They had babies there and now they are here in Vegas attending Postpartum Pastry Hour. This was such a beautiful full circle moment for me. Late last night a sweet little love bird made it very quickly into Mama’s arms! 🌱 When I met this couple at the beginning of their pregnancy I just new they were going to be the most calm and zen clients I’ve met thus far. They did not disappoint! 🌱 Mama began laboring at home with papa and her mom starting around 1 am the night before last. We kept in contact via text all day yesterday as they moved along. They walked, rested, showered, and nourished their bodies. Papa was the best support keeping her in the zone. So much in the zone that they didn’t realize they had bypassed early labor and moved into active labor. 🌱 After a nighttime phone call it quickly became apparent to me baby was coming and they didn’t even realize they weren’t still in early labor. As your doula we talk about how early labor can start and stop over a few days. This beautiful couple held onto that but it didn’t apply to them lol. They were about to meet their baby! 🌱 I made a quick call to their midwife over at Serenity Birth Center and we all agreed meeting at the center was the best plan. Mom had one contraction there once in the door, moved onto the bed, and then there was baby’s head. This was the point I walked into the center. Still, she was in full control while pushing. Talk about zen! 🌱 Papa , grandma, and mama made the best team and truly believed in her body and her birth. It was the most beautiful thing to watch. So many happy tears and laughter as we all realize this little love was almost a car baby. I am so incredibly proud of you guys! 🌱 The birth space is incredibly sacred, and it’s an honor to be invited in. Thank you for allowing me to support your journey. Yesterday a sweet little love bird made it very quickly into Mama’s arms! This was a whirlwind for Mom, Dad, and baby. 🌱 After an induction with big brother this mama wanted to be sure to spontaneously go into labor and stay home as long as possible. She did just that! We had a phone call around 10:30am deciding I should make my way to her home to begin my support. Things quickly intensified and they decided for us to instead meet at their birthing place. They made it there about 5 minutes before me. After a quick triage, it was determined Mama was 9cm. 🌱 There was no time for questions or settling in. It was baby time! Mom was a total powerhouse and completely in control even when she didn’t feel like it. Papa was a steady comfort and so sweet with her. It was beautiful to see them work together and so quickly. 🌱 From the time I arrived until the baby’s birth was 13 minutes! I mean really… what a total rockstar this mama was. It’s not easy when things move that quickly. There’s hardly any time to process what’s happing. I am so proud of you! 🌱 It’s always an honor to be invited into such a sacred birth space. Yesterday evening a not so little love bird made it into Mama and Papa’s arms. This was another one of those 🦄 mamas who had a 9-5 weekday birth, super rare! 🌱 I’m always in awe of growing families and their love for one another. These parents expected baby to arrive over the last week with lots of starting and stopping of labor. It’s hard to sit in the unknown as your body preps and practices for birth. These two made it look easy! They continued to laugh and enjoy each moment as it came along. 🌱 Once labor began this mama was cruising along and very quickly! She remained calm, focused, and gave birth within a few pushes. What a total rockstar! Papa was beaming from ear to ear with the biggest grin. Early this morning a beautiful little love bird arrived in mom and dad’s arms! 🌱 This sweet family had an unexpected change of plans at 37 weeks. Weeks prior they worked through options, talked with their provider, and ultimately decided an induction would be the best choice for their family. 🌱 This mama rocked her induction for days! She was focused, calm, advocated for herself, and had the best sense of humor the entire time. Once active labor really began she used her tools in her toolbox to remain calm and rest. I was so proud of her decision making and focus! 🌱 This couple was so fun! They had me rolling in laughter from beginning to end. Grandma was there as well and it was amazing to watch a mother’s love as her baby became a mother. I was definitely all in my feels. Papa was a steady source of comfort, snacks, and compliments. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen someone as in love as he was while reminding her how amazing she was at labor and birth. I was definitely swooning over their bond! 🌱 After an extended pushing phase, many pep talks, lots of tears, and some tough decisions, baby made it onto mama’s chest. I’m always in awe of a mother’s love. The perseverance and strength she had makes her a total badass! Yesterday the cutest little April Fool’s babe made their way into mama’s arms! 🌱 This sweet mama was 2 weeks past her guess date, had prodromal labor for days, and then gave birth naturally at home. Her little prankster gave her a run for her money this week. Her birth was so beautiful centered in the living room with the most calm vibes. It was magnificent! Not to mention she completed a successful VBAC. What a celebration it was! 🌱 Papa and older brother comforted, loved on, coached, and support her through the entire process. I think that’s my favorite part of home births, is watching a family unit work together to welcome the newest member of the family. World Doula Week Day 6 🌱 Today is a very common topic, Induction of labor! I would like to start by saying that I’m not anti induction as there is a time and a place for medical intervention. I realize gestational diabetes, hypertension, low fluid, fetal distress, and many other conditions are cause for induction. However, recently I’ve seen so many elective inductions without in depth discussions. 🌱 Here are some of the reasons people opt for an elective induction. Due Dates Big Baby Doctor’s Vacation Plans Family In Town Sick Of Being Pregnant The ARRIVE study Here are my favorite podcasts that address them all. I love @ebbirth because they break down all of the evidence, risks, and benefits. What is the Evidence for Induction or C-section for a Big Baby? Evidence on: Inducing for Due Dates - Evidence Based Birth® The ARRIVE study - Evidence Based Birth® 🌱 Due dates are a guess. The average first-time birther will spontaneously go into labor after 41 weeks. Ultrasound scans can be off in either direction in regards to a baby’s weight. Also, our bodies can birth big babies. Your provider deserves a family vacation, make sure you have a backup provider you love and trust. Have your family plan their visit postpartum, you will love the extra hands after baby arrives. See a chiropractor and practice comfort measures at the end of your last trimester. Massage, rest, yoga, hydration, and nutrition are great tools. ACOG doesn’t recommend induction at 39 weeks for everyone that is low risk. ACOG Response to ARRIVE Trial | ACOG Ultimately it’s your body, your birth, and your baby. The issue is, these discussions aren’t taking place. An induction is a medical intervention that carries risk. You should be made aware of all risks so you can make an informed choice. No matter where you give birth to your baby your team should ask permission and explain everything. 🌱 Informed Consent Is NOT: 🚩 We are gonna get you started on fluids. 🚩 I’m gonna check your cervix. 🚩 Let’s break your water. 🚩 While I’m here I’m gonna place internal monitors. 🚩You can’t eat or drink. 🚩 I’m just gonna cut here (episiotomy) to help you get baby out. 🚩 We are taking your baby to the warmer. 🚩 Here let’s help baby latch, proceeds to grab breast and baby without consent to touch. Informed Consent IS: 🌼 We’d like to check your cervix to assess baby’s station, dilation, and effacement, is that ok with you? 🌼 You have had a consistent fever, we’d like to administer (xyz) here are the benefits and risks. World Doula Week Day 4 🌱 Let’s talk about your birth space and mindset during labor! It doesn’t matter where you decide to birth, you need to prep for comfort. 🌱 We are mammals and mammals don’t give birth in nature out in the wide open for all to see. They find a dark and safe space to be left alone to stay focused. They are cozy and warm when they birth their young. 🌱 How can we replicate this for ourselves? Here are some ideas…. 👚 Wear your own comfortable clothes. 🕯 Keep the lights low and soft. 🛏 Bring your own pillows and blankets. 🌸 Diffuse essential oils to make it smell less like a hospital room. 🎶 Play soft music to let your mind drift. 🧘 Practice meditation and positive affirmations. 💆♀️Have your partner or doula massage you. 😮💨 Practice breathwork to keep focused. 🤫 Make a sign for your door requesting quiet voices upon entry to your room for medical staff. 🛑 No students allowed. If you are worried about extra people in and out, you are 💯 allowed to request no extra staff. 🙅🏼♀️ No scary birth stories. You can request that your friends and family don’t share their own birth trauma. Only positive vibes! 🌱 Your mindset and comfort in labor are key. It’s World Doula Week 🥳 🌱 I’m going to share some of my favorite things each day this week! First, I outta explain a little about what a doula is and about me! 🌱 The word Doula is a Greek word meaning servant. A birth doula is a trained professional who supports birthers and their families through pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and immediately after. We offer emotional, physical, and educational support as a service to our communities. 🌱 I trained and certified with DONA International 4 years ago. It’s been so much fun building my business and meeting so many amazing humans. It’s my favorite thing in the world to witness a birther lay eyes on their baby for the first time ever. On Saturday afternoon while the sun was shining a family brought their sweet love bird into their arms. 🌱 Mama had be planning and hoping for a calm and easy birth with minimal interventions. This wasn’t her first babe and she really was hoping for a smoother story. 🌱 Well she got it! After a very short induction and a fast active labor phase, little babe was birthed in just a few pushes. From the time I parked my car until baby was in mama’s arms was 1 hour. 🌱 Papa was so proud, loving, and a gentle spirit. It was amazing to see the love these two share. They are building their family on a beautiful foundation of love and it was magic to see. 🌱 This birth was an absolute unicorn of an experience as a doula. It’s not often babies arrive during office hours of 9-5 and so quickly lol. I didn’t even open my magical doula bag! 🌱 Being invited into such a sacred space is always an honor. Postpartum Visits look different for each client. I’m just here to meet you where you are and where you need me that day. 🌱 Today mama got a shower, I washed up the dishes, and then we all played board games. These cuties were rocking their lounge clothes and even mama’s robe while we laughed the morning away. 🌱 Sometimes we just need someone fun to hang with and easy mornings together to feel refreshed! I’m super behind this week! Last Saturday in the early morning hours a mama and papa met their beautiful little love bird. 🌱 This birth began calm and comfortably! Mama was able to rest and labor slowly and steadily. It was a total honor to spend time with her while papa attended to the older siblings at home. 🌱 The next day birth plans changed and goals had to shift. Sometimes these little darlings need a little help making their grand arrival. Mama and Papa were so calm and watching them do skin to skin was magical. 🌱 Sweet babe came out ready to eat! Baby and mama worked together to created a beautiful breastfeeding moment. They are totally awesome! 🌱 As always it’s a complete honor to be allowed in to the sacred birth space. On the night of the 10th a sweet little love bird made it into their parents arms! Their birth was mixed with laughter, love, strength, and courage. 🌱 This mama progressed very quickly! It was beautiful to watch her advocate for herself, ask all of the questions, and believe in her body. She was so intuitive! 🌱 After a prolonged 2nd stage of labor plans changed and they had to make some unplanned choices for their birth. Mama and papa asked all of the questions to obtain evidence based information. It was amazing to see the team they are and how much they love each other. 🌱 Before we knew it, it was birthday time and their little sweetie was cuddling skin to skin with papa. When mama and baby got to cuddle together baby latched like a champion! It was so magical to watch them work together to begin their breastfeeding journey. Papa was filled with encouragement and beautiful blessings for his family. It was so lovely! 🌱 Growing your family is such a special and intimate time. Allowing me into such a sacred space is an honor, thank you.
