A review came in from my recent recital in Graz 🤩 For those who don't speak German, it reads: "Playing the accordion is the new gym, at least if you approach it like in the accordion solo concerto by musician Ghenadie Rotari. Stepping in at short notice, he set up a program that made not only the performer sweat because of its sheer physicality. A concrete chin like Mike Tyson isn't bad for surviving Rebecca Saunders' "Flesh". The chin registers on the accordion have to be operated with emphasis and continuously, hard work for the chin. Ghenadie Rotari mastered these and similar hurdles with brilliance. The music is not brute at all, but chiseled and shimmering through, exploring the possibilities of the instrument. But also damn exhausting. It's a good thing that the second half of the program was calmer. The evening culminated in a lecture-performance which, by interlacing text and music, shed light on the connections between political and musical systems. ‘Letter Pieces’ are a series of musical and theatrical works created by London-based Australian composer Matthew Shlomowitz. In December 2020, ten Sounds Unheard participants joined Matthew and Speak Percussion for one week to compose, rehearse and film their own Letter Pieces. Raised in Adelaide, he now lives in London and has worked with groups such as Calefax, Ensemble Offspring, EXAUDI, Ives Ensemble, Nieuw Ensemble, Quatuor Diotima, Ricciotti Ensemble, Speak Percussion and Wespoke. NEKO3 has been on a light hibernation since July, but we have big plans from January onwards so don’t be afraid! Kalle went to US for a couple of months to visit Steven Schick at the University of California San Diego - meanwhile Fei and Lorenzo are visiting Bern a few times to work on some classical contemporary repertoire, and Mads is fiercely working on new music that includes two new premieres for/with NEKO3, as well as working on the post-production of our new EP featuring two of his first pieces premiered by us! . Some info about our spring season. Starting from the first days of January we’ll begin our monthly visits in Bern to study with the incomparable Antoine Francoise, working on new rep by eg. @elenarykova_ , Matthew Shlomowitz, Mads Emil Dreyer, @xavierbonfill and Juliana Hodkinson! In February-March an intense concert period lasting a couple of weeks takes place in Denmark. First of all, we’re happy to be invited to premiere a new piece of an awesome Icelandic composer and recent mother @baragisladottir as part of her debut concert from the Royal Danish Academy of Music on February 19th. A week after that we get to do two collaborative concerts with the dynamite Aarhus-based @njydquartet , featuring concerts in Copenhagen on Feb 26th and in Aarhus on Feb 27th, so regardless of where in DK You’ll be situated, You won’t have any excuses to miss this showcase of pure awesomeness! Finally, we’ll be participating in the PULSAR festival again this year, this time premiering a new work from Xavier Bonfill for ——- with ——- (a separate, AWESOME announcement on this concert will follow) during the first days of March. Moreover, we’re happy to announce some new multimedial commissions by composers Juliana Hodkinson, @marcelalucatelli and Anders Monrad - more info on these will follow later in the year!
