2018 was nice, wasn’t it? No Covid, no October 7th, no noticeable gray. Betty White and Lin Brehmer still alive. The House of Wah-Sun on Lincoln Ave. Plucked a Kenneth Cole vest from Lakeview consignment-obscurity that spring, ordered many an Oreo milkshake. Wine and roses, indeed. Adding to that Year of the Dog’s string of miracles: caught @mute_duo twice. Once in September opening for Grouper as part of the Empty Bottle’s Beyond the Gate series and in July laying the groove for Ryley Walker. Enjoy their music but hadn’t listened much in the intervening years: a few times after their 2020 release, “Lapse in Passage”. But a couple weeks ago, they dropped their new LP, “Migrant Flocks” and it is enthralling. A mille feuille of an endeavor: sheets of sound expanding then doubling back in service to the album’s heterodox singularity. Stylistically, the record is appreciably innovative, taking the duo of Sam Wagster and Skyler Rowe to aural plateaus they hadn’t yet climbed. Songs like the 13-minute, “The Ocean Door” are immersive in the fashion of earlier Mute Duo recordings, yet there is a new elasticity, particularly as the song winds down, and chords tumbleweed into feelings of peaceful resignation: like what poor saps felt directly before the machinations in “Soylent Green”. Another standout is “Bisrama”, a somewhat simpler composition by Mute Duo standards, but by no means is it simplistic. Conjures visions of tiny gardens, children happy and protected with their parents, chalk drawings on the sidewalk. I love it. @constellationchicago is a fascinating venue: a contemporary boîte in the immured tones of Vilhelm Hammershøi meets Hephaestus’s breakfast nook. Sparse, subsumed in chiaroscuro: all right angles, cold corners, neon flickers. Woman next to me with King Buzzo hair, a banger of a rosewood scarf (a pattern I’d learned whilst failing to grasp knitting during Covid) and ochre Danskos asked if I’d attended shows there before. When I responded “yes”, she seemed oddly discomfited and receded, posthaste, to the rear of the nook; disillusionment eking from the most perplexing of sources.

Kim Althea Gordon (born April 28, 1953) is an American musician, singer and songwriter, best known as the bassist, guitarist, and vocalist of alternative rock band Sonic Youth. Born in Rochester, New York, she was raised in Los Angeles, California, where her father was a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. After graduating from Los Angeles’s Otis College of Art and Design, she moved to New York City to begin an art career. There, she formed Sonic Youth with Thurston Moore in 1981.[1] She and Moore married in 1984, and the band released a total of six albums on independent labels before the end of the 1980s. They would subsequently release nine studio albums on the major label DGC Records, beginning with Goo in 1990. Giulio Erasmus - Second Attempt (2024). A wonderfully discordant and clattering dispatch from the more unspooled, unshackled and dubwise edges of Post-Punk in 2024. There are a lot of familiar contours and edges to this sound but definitely put together with enough energy and enthusiasm to keep it uniquely its own thing! ‘Flowers Of Romance’ era PiL drums careening down a rusted metallic staircase! Booming, dubbed out, depth-charge bass, all manner of guitar skronk and scree, layers of tape echo and delay all topped off with some ice cold, FX’d, sardonic vocals! Tunes like ‘Collapsed, Speech’ and ‘Something Else, Hector’ are loose limbed and mutant dancefloor ready! The thrust and strut of A Certain Ratio married to the dubbed out polyrhythmic layers of African Head Charge and other On-U Sound mavericks. Other tunes corrode the usual ‘Song’ form even further and sound like dank, acid damaged takes on the more whimsical edges of This Heat’s tape experiments. The music dissolving into weirdly scuzzy and unexpected not-quite-ambient passages and spoken word digressions dealing with the life of a bus driver! This is all put together by one man band Giulio Erasmus ‘via means of tape, computer and phone in Bruxelles’ and released by @mangelrecords.
