Just a thought. A few weeks ago, myself and the students of Nemo Academy had the privilege of watching master James Baxter animating a shot from scratch. I keep thinking how wonderful would have been if we had footage of Milt Kahl animating a shot, just like Baxter didi? Too bad no one ever thought about that at the time. Of course, it would have to be done with a 16 mm camera and a bit expensive, but it would have been incredible! Milt Kahl (1909–1987) oli yksi Disneyn "yhdeksästä vanhasta miehestä". Hän aloitti vuonna 1934 ja teki studion lyhäreitä ja pitkiä elokuvia vuoteen 1977 asti. Yksi suosikkini hänen animoimistaan lyhäreistä on vuoden 1937 Lonesome Ghosts. Today, we celebrate the birthday of one of Walt Disney's most beloved animators, the ever-talented Milt Kahl. Renowned for his exceptional draftsman skills and spirited nature, Milt Kahl had a magical touch within Walt's esteemed team. His expertise was breathing life into human characters, a task often considered quite daunting. Yet, Milt effortlessly transformed sketches into captivating personas, infusing them with charm and personality. His mastery was so remarkable that during the creation of "Pinocchio," concerns arose about the titular character's likeability. Milt solved the issue by reshaping Pinocchio to appear more like a real boy (then adding the wooden features), as opposed to making wood look like a boy. Many of our cherished human characters—Alice, Peter Pan, the Fairy Godmother, Merlin, and Prince Phillip—were crafted by Milt. Today, we remember Milt Kahl as one of Walt's esteemed "Nine Old Men" and a Disney Legend, forever etching his name in the halls of animation history with admiration. #disney #disneyhistory #waltdisney #animation #animationhistory #miltkahl #disneycharacters #pinocchio #nineoldmen #waltdisneyanimation #disneyanimation

OTD - March 22, 1909 - animator Milton "Milt" Kahl, one of Walt Disney's Nine Old Men, was born. Kahl joined Disney in 1934 as an inbetweener and later as Bill Roberts' assistant on the Mickey Mouse cartoons, and was promoted to animator on "Mickey's Circus" (1936). In "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937), Kahl animated the forest animals, and later made his breakthrough by designing the main character in "Pinocchio" (1940). He went on to animate animal characters in "Bambi" (1942), "Saludos Amigos" (1942) and "The Three Caballeros" (1944), and also animated on Goofy shorts such as "Tiger Trouble" and "Hockey Homicide" (both 1945). Starting with "Song of the South" (1946), Kahl became the studio's go-to character designer. He subsequently animated Pecos Bill in "Melody Time" (1948), Brom Bones in "Ichabod and Mr Toad" (1949), the Fairy Godmother in "Cinderella" (1950), and Alice in "Alice in Wonderland" (1951), in addition to often helping other animators with their scenes. Due to his excellent draftsmanship, Kahl was assigned the male heroes in "Peter Pan" (1953) and "Sleeping Beauty" (1959), though he preferred animating cartoonier characters. Starting with "Sleeping Beauty" and "101 Dalmatians" (1961), Kahl's graphic, modernist drawing style became the norm of Disney animation. He went on to animate the villains in "The Sword in the Stone" (1963), "The Jungle Book" (1967) and "The Aristocats" (1970), "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (1971), and the protagonist in "Robin Hood" (1973). After animating all of Madame Medusa in "The Rescuers" (1977), a character he later called his favorite, Kahl retired in 1976, though he did character des suggestions for "The Black Cauldron" (1985). He died in 1987. Considered by many the best draftsman in Disney history (although he personally considered Marc Davis superior), Kahl was famous for his drawing versatility, his construction (with Fred Moore) of the "Disney style", and his landmark achievements in animation history. He explained : "It’s just that I don’t stop trying so quickly, I keep at it. I happen to have high standards and I try to meet them.”

OTD - February 7, 1940 - Walt Disney's second feature-length film, "Pinocchio", was released. After the worldwide success of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937), Walt became excited about the boundless possibilities of animation. He chose to adapt Carlo Collodi's classic for his next feature, but five months into production, he had all the work done to date scrapped because he found the bratty puppet unappealing. After a revision of the story and character, the film was put back into the works. Of the many episodes in Collodi's story, only three were retained in Disney's version : the puppet show, the Land of Toys and the Terrible Shark (changed to a whale). The Talking Cricket, originally a minor character, became the deuteragonist Jiminy Cricket, voiced by popular singer Cliff Edwards. Produced at the peak of Disney's Golden Age, "Pinocchio" is often regarded as the pinnacle of the studio's creativity, summing up a decade's learnings in storytelling, character and effects animation, technical advancements, and background art - animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston wrote : "for richness of handcrafted detail, 'Pinocchio' will never be surpassed". The multiplane shot of the village in the morning alone cost $48,000; nearly twice the cost of a then-standard short film. "Pinocchio" opened to rave reviews and was the first animated feature to win competitive awards, winning two Oscars for Best Score and Best Song ("When You Wish Upon A Star"). However, it was  a box-office bomb, mainly due to the foreign market closing during WWII. Its popularity rose with later reissues and it has since received praise as a landmark of film. In 1994, it was added to the National Film Registry for "cultural, historical or aesthetic significance", and it has topped many lists of the greatest animated films ever made. In Walt's own words : "In producing 'Pinocchio', we have tried to install all the entertainment values - humor, pathos, excitement and beauty - but even more important, we have sincerely tried to keep faith with the legions of people all over the world who have read the story and who love it". 200th post!

Had at great turnout at my Lipscomb Animation Workshop today ! The theme was “Performance Animation”. A subject that covered so many connecting elements, that we’ll probably make this the continuing subject for my next Workshop. Tropics covered were : Discussion of the work of “MILT KAHL” on the Disney Animated Feature “THE RESCUERS”. Doing a demo (swipe to see) of his approach to drawing his signature character “MADAME MEDUSA” (along with fond reminiscing). Discussing the importance of “Patterns”, “Phrasing” & “Texture” in animation. Had the students do a two part exercise where they photographed themselves doing an emotional expression & creating that expression in drawing using a character of their choice. All of this was followed & concluded with a demo of a scene of “PRINCESS DAPHNE” at her makeup mirror. My thanks to all my students that participated & very special thanks to “SKIP STOKES” & my TA “ZEKE DAVIS” for organizing this. #lipscombanimationworkshop #miltkahl #johnpomeroyanimation #madamemedusa #princessdaphne #disneystherescuers #penny #fondmemories #drawingdemo #lipscombuniversity #nashville_tn #performanceanimation #greatturnout #skipstokes #zekedavis #supporttechteam #handdrawn #2danimation

OTD - January 25, 1961 - Walt Disney's 17th animated feature, "One Hundred and One Dalmatians", was released. The idea of adapting Dodie Smith's book was brought up to Walt by screenwriter Charles Brackett in 1957, and the project was set to be the studio's next animated feature after "Sleeping Beauty" (1959). This made "101 Dalmatians" the first Disney animated feature since "The Three Caballeros" (1944) not based on a project the studio had shelved during WWII. This was the first feature photographed entirely with the Xerography process, developed by Ub Iwerks in the late 1950s to replace the cost and labor of inking. The process was implemented as an economic measure after the financial failure of "Sleeping Beauty", and would be used on all of Disney's animated features over the next three decades. Since it gave a bold, scratchy outline, art director Ken Anderson exploited it by designing a film heavily reliant on lines, which color stylist Walt Peregoy completed with a modernist color palette. Animator Milt Kahl drew inspiration from Ronald Searle's illustrations to design all the characters except the main antagonist, Cruella DeVil, who was designed and animated entirely by Marc Davis in his last animation task. Storyman Bill Peet single-handedly wrote and boarded the entire film, a first for an animated feature. Costs were further saved by shooting the vehicles as live-action models, which were then matted onto cels. "101 Dalmatians" was a critical and financial hit, placing the Disney animation department back on its feet. Walt personally hated the film due to the unrealistic look of Xerox, but seeing the success of a film he had minimal input on, he trusted his staff to make movies without his help. Smith, who admitted having written the story as though she knew it would be animated, was delighted with the result and deemed it superior to her original. She described in a letter to Walt : "I thought the animation brilliant, the color beautiful, and many of the backgrounds almost beyond praise… thank you, dear Walt Disney and your whole studio, for making such a wonderful film out of my book."

OTD - January 19, 1949 - Walt Disney's 14th feature-length film, "So Dear To My Heart", was generally released (it had premiered in November 1948). Based on the book "Midnight and Jeremiah" by Sterling North, this was Walt's second live-action narrative film, following "Song of the South" (1946). Although he originally envisioned it as his first all-live action feature, his distributor convinced him that his name was still closely tied with animation. Walt decided to add minimal animated sequences to the film, justifying them as "figments of a small boy's imagination". "So Dear To My Heart" would be Disney's last live-action/animation hybrid film until "Mary Poppins" (1964). The film has similarities with "Song of the South", namely a rural setting, the merge of live-action and animation, and child actors Bobby Driscoll and Luana Patten in the starring roles. Although the story is set in Indiana (and storyman Perce Pearce and color stylist Mary Blair were sent there to conduct research), the film was shot in California. Live-action shooting took roughly half a year, and animation was not completed until a year later. "So Dear To My Heart" received tepid reviews upon release but was a financial success, earning a special Juvenile Award for Driscoll and a Best Song Award nomination for "Lavender Blue". The film was one of Walt's personal favorites as it harkened back to his childhood as a farm boy: "'So Dear' was especially close to me. Why, that’s the life my brother and I grew up with as kids out in Missouri". #sodeartomyheart #waltdisney #disneyclassics #maryblair #bobbydriscoll #luanapatten #danny #owl #miltkahl #ericlarson #farm #indiana #sterlingnorth #classicanimation #americananimation #vintageanimation #thegoldenageofanimation #goldenagecartoons #classicdisney #burlives #cartoon

OTD - January 15, 1943 - Walt Disney's animated short "Education for Death : The Making of the Nazi", directed by Clyde Geronimo, was released. Adapted from the book by Gregor Ziemer, this was one of many government shorts produced by Disney during WWII. Walt had been accused of misusing the government's money on the short "The New Spirit" (1942), so he instead turned to the magazine Reader's Digest to finance "Education for Death". The film depicts the stages of life of German boys growing up in the Hitler youth, ultimately leading them to their death. The film's dark tones were compensated by moments of comic relief, including a retelling of "Sleeping Beauty" wherein a caricatured Adolf Hitler rescues an overweight Brunhilde, animated by Ward Kimball. Except for Art Smith's narration, all of the dialogue is told in German. Animators Frank Thomas and Milt Kahl reportedly hated working on this film, envying Kimball's assignments, while they "got these awful scenes of real kids, [...] and they're talking German, and on our readings it had all German". Thomas recalled the following anecdote : "Milt and I were going upstairs for some reason, and we were standing at the elevator. Milt said 'We ought to kick Walt right in the Ą$$ for doing this type of thing', and all of a sudden the doors opened, and there was Walt. So I couldn't resist, so I said, 'Here he is, go ahead!'" Like the studio's other wartime shorts (except the Latin American films), "Education for Death" was kept in the Disney vault and seldom shown for many years after its release due to its dated content, but it has received praise from film scholars and historians as one of the studio's finest shorts. In 1994, it received an honorable mention in the book "The 50 Greatest Cartoons" by Jerry Beck. #educationfordeath #gregorziemer #waltdisney #clydegeronimo #antinazi #wwii #wartimecartoons #propaganda #wardkimball #billtytla #frankthomas #miltkahl #sleepingbeauty #vintageanimation #vintagecartoons #animationhistory #classicanimation #classicdisney #classiccartoons #americananimation #cartoon

Princess Aurora by Marc Davis and Prince Philip by Milt Kahl On “Sleeping Beauty” (1959), these two long time friends and office rivals were finally able to show their talents for modern art through more graphic-inspired animation. That being said, Kahl’s temper and Davis’s love of pranks would sometimes collide. Once, Kahl threw Davis out of his office yelling, “Dammit, Marc! You can’t draw your ass!” Davis returned an hour later with a large, meticulously illustrated rendering of his own backside. #animationhistory #2danimation #disneyhistory #disneyanimation #sleepingbeauty #miltkahl #marcdavis #princessaurora #princephilip #eyvindearle

Milt Kahl is my favorite artist. I love the way that he simplifies the lines and makes his characters unique and memorable. It was very challenging to read this character’s shapes, and I learned a lot during the process. I intend to model some more of Milt Kahl’s characters to study their three-dimensionality. I used Zbrush to model and Marmoset to render. #3dartist #zbrush #miltkahl #disneyplus

OTD - December 25, 1963 - Walt Disney's 18th animated feature, "The Sword in the Stone", was released. This was the last Disney animated feature released during Walt's lifetime, while "The Jungle Book" (1967) was the last film he personally oversaw before his death in December 1966. Walt had his eyes on adapting T.H. White's book since the late 1930s, but progressively lost interest in animation and approved the final script while vacationing in Florida. Former animator Wolfgang Reitherman was made the sole director on the film, a duty he would repeat on "The Jungle Book", "The Aristocats" (1970) and "Robin Hood" (1973). Reitherman had been famous for broad action scenes and knew little about emotion, which led to this film suffering from a lack of heart. Storyman Bill Peet, who had written and storyboarded all of "101 Dalmatians" (1961) by himself, repeated the feat on this film, though his own lack of sentimentality hampered his story. The film was the first animated film to feature songs by the Sherman Brothers, who later provided songs for other animated features including "Mary Poppins" (1964) and "Jungle Book". Under pressure of controlling costs, the film's budget was kept 40% lower than that of "Dalmatians", forcing an economy of detail and reuse of animation throughout. The film was again photographed using the Xerography process, and a new cleanup method dubbed "touch-up" was devised for the film, where the animators' drawings were cleaned up directly on their original sheets by the assistants. "The Sword in the Stone" was met with mixed reviews, and while it recovered its $4 million budget, it was considered a flop when its revenue was compared to its promotion and negative costs. The film is to this day often regarded as a weaker entry in the Disney Canon, though it receives praise for its character animation and some sequences. Animator Floyd Norman recalled : "The film had a certain charm even though it never connected with audiences. I certainly have nothing but fond memories working on it and still love the characters of Merlin and [Madam] Mim. Walt Disney still walked the hallways at that time and animation was the best job in the world".

Disember #14: Aristocats I remember a Youtuber (Phelous) in a Dingo Pictures review making a hilarious comment on Edgar adding so many sleeping pills he could've killed the cats. Hence Yzma's death potion (Llama extract in fact, they're supposed to be DEAD) #mywork #disember #fanart #action #disney #disneycember #aristocats #furry #pencil #fanart #conceptart #photoshop #draw #sketching #inprogress #cats #butler #sketch #sketchbook #pen #ink #inking #illustration #detail #cartoon #comic #miltkahl #frankthomas #johnlounsbery

OTD - December 20, 1968 - Walt Disney's animated short "Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day", directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, was released. After the success of "Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree" (1966), Walt decided to produce a second animated short adapted from A. A. Milne's books, but died in December 1966 after approving the songs and story. The project was put into production in mid-1967 (under the working title "Winnie the Pooh and the Heffalumps"), with Wolfgang Reitherman, who had directed the first short, resuming the role. This made "Blustery Day" the last Disney animated short produced with any input from Walt. Taking into account the criticisms from purists toward the first short, Reitherman was careful to correct some of the early pitfalls. Pooh's friend Piglet, absent from Disney's work so far, was given a prominent role here; and animators Milt Kahl, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, who had been denied work on "Honey Tree", were made directing animators. The Sherman Brothers provided five "Milnesque" songs, including "Heffalumps and Woozles" and "The Rain Rain Rain Came Down Down", which stimulated the animators' imagination. "Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day" was a success and won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short, which Reitherman accepted on behalf of Walt. It was followed by a third short in the series, "Winnie The Pooh and Tigger Too" (1974), and the three were later grouped into the anthology film "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" (1977). In accepting the Award, Reitherman spoke of producing "Blustery Day" as "another memorable moment we've all shared with Walt". #winniethepooh #tigger #piglet #eeyore #christopherrobin #aamilne #waltdisney #wolfgangreitherman #winniethepoohandtheblusteryday #ericlarson #johnlounsbery #miltkahl #frankthomas #olliejohnston #americananimation #disneyanimation #classicdisney #awardwinning #animationhistory #classiccartoons #vintageanimation #vintagecartoons #adaptation #cartoon #animation
