Published in 1992 this wonderful book titled “Disney Dons Dogtags” The Best of Disney Military Insignia from World War 11 explores the contributions that Walt Disney and his amazing staff at the studios made during the war. They made training films for the Army and other military services and created insignias for military units. In one of my former posts you can see a complete set of matchbook covers with all the different insignias for the different units. Poster stamps were also produced. Freaky Friday! A new sculpture, bound for the Haunted Mansion Parlor onboard the Disney Treasure. Who inspired this mysterious bust? The sculpture was modeled in the image of the famed Disney Legend, Rolly Crump. Nicknamed “Rolly” by Walt Disney himself, during the early days of the company and played an integral role in designing the original Haunted Mansion at Disneyland Resort. Six decades later, the Haunted Mansion Parlor will unlock the next chapter of the Haunted Mansion saga for Disney Cruise Line guests. The last Friday in April is Arbor, but we celebrate trees every day in Marceline. The legacy of trees is intertwined with the memories of Walt Disney's childhood here in the early 1900s. Young Walt liked to be under the embrace of his beloved 'Dreaming Tree' on the Disney Farm, where he found solace and inspiration. With his first tablet and crayons, he crafted drawings for his sister Ruth, and always had a story to go with them. It was his haven of creativity. Even as Walt grew into adulthood, Marceline remained a cherished retreat, where he would steal moments of tranquility beneath his Dreaming Tree. Though the original tree may no longer grace the land, its spirit lives on. Seeds collected from the Dreaming Tree were sown at Disneyland Park for its 50th Anniversary, and another sapling now flourishes beside the ground where its predecessor once stood. Good Afternoon, everyone! With the 35th anniversary of Disney's Hollywood Studios next week, I just wanted to share one of my creations. I made this Chinese Theatre shadowbox in summer 2020 (one of many projects from that time period!). As with most of my other projects, this is completely handmade. It was important for me to get all the details as accurate as possible at such a small scale (the shadowbox is 9.75" square). Everything is made from paper, cardboard, colored pencils, and acrylic paint (I purchased the shadowbox from a craft store). I always try to extend my projects onto the shadowbox border and I think it worked well here. I really like how the handprints in the forecourt lead your eye to the entrance. I placed 4 LEDs (light emitting diodes) within the Chinese Theatre for the lighting and searchlight effects. What you see on the outside Are pretty outfits and funny stories Smiles, laughter, and friendship Hours in the sun surrounded by facts and history Podcast studios and polished content Books that bring a little pixie dust and words of encouragement All wrapped up in Disney Magic But what you don’t see are hours of research that sometimes goes nowhere Days on end of not enough sleep as I try to balance being a mom, wife, author, creator, and podcaster Even more days spent on airplanes, or airports when my flights are delayed Packing and unpacking suitcases that sometimes go missing Rinse and repeat You don’t see endless comments criticizing my work, my life, and my appearance the weight of which I try to drop as quickly as possible, but sometimes it lingers You don’t see the anxiety that comes with every post, trying to anticipate what people will accuse me of getting wrong, or what I have to include to justify my story or myself. You don’t see the lingering thoughts wondering if some dismiss my words because my voice holds female inflection or because I’m wearing pretty clothes As if dressing my body somehow empties my mind. But the sum of what you see both sides together equal a human chasing a dream wanting her words to matter turning her past pain into prose and hoping all these pieces of history can be cherished and remembered as they reflect a bigger story than is evident on the surface. We are all a balance of the seen and the unseen, light and dark, hope and hurt. Some of us just hide it better than others. But the truly beautiful part is letting others see both sides of who you are so that they have permission to do the same. See, and be seen. One of my favorite gems in Disneyland is Mlle. Antoinette’s Parfumerie! 🩷 Walt Disney had this shop designed for his wife, Lillian. He sent artist Glenda Von Kessel to Paris to study reverse painting and in turn the mirrors turned out to be stunning! This Barn for example is a reproduction of the original that sat on this farmland where Walt spent his time dreaming and drawing. He used the plans to create the same barn in his own backyard and those plans were then used to raise this reproduction on the old farm for Walt’s 100th Birthday. This is just scratching the surface! This is also the land where Walt had his original #DreamingTree and where the son of the Dreaming Tree stands today, and in town you will find the Walt Disney Hometown Museum which is a truly beautifully curated look into the life of the Disney Family and their connection to this small town! The Ford Wonder Rotunda was among the most-visited attractions at the 1964/1965 New York World’s Fair (second only to the GM Futurama II exhibit). With that success, Walt assumed his relationship with Ford would continue at Disneyland Park after the fair. Before the fair closed, Walt and his team flew up to Dearborn and made a pitch to Ford executives for a Ford attraction as part of the New Tomorrowland project set to open at Disneyland in 1967. They threw everything they could at chairman and CEO Henry Ford II—stunning concept art, an intricate model (shipped to Michigan at Walt’s expense), even a bouncy song penned by Richard and Robert Sherman (“Get the Feel of the Wheel of a Ford”). Unfortunately, all the razzle-dazzle fell flat. “Henry Ford II was not only unresponsive, he was seemingly dismissive of the value of all that Disney talent potentially available to endorse his company’s product,” Disney Legend Marty Sklar remembered. “Mr. Ford hardly seemed to be paying attention.” Rejected by Ford despite all the effort made and concessions proposed, Walt flew back to California disappointed and angry—and he expressed that anger accordingly on the flight. “That is the stupidest man I ever met!” Walt told Marty. But Walt didn’t walk away from the Ford show empty handed. After the fair closed, the dinosaurs from the Ford attraction were shipped to Disneyland and placed along the Disneyland Railroad. The Primeval World diorama opened in 1966 and still exists today. Fun fact: the Primeval World show building also doubled as the Disneyland administration building. For years, park executives had begged Walt for a proper office space. 23.The Romantic Era marks a profound schism, emotive, spectacular, narrative but increasingly unhinged from elite patrons and agendas. On the mainstream art history line, personal expression begins to dominate over any agreed upon style. Artists become profoundly free. Within this period, the ancient system of aristocratic patronage dating back before Rome is broken by series of revolutions. In America we think of revolution in very romantic terms…because ours was really more of a foreign war against Britain. Every other revolution across Europe was fought in someone’s front yard.… bitter, violent and very scary. Because people in power never give power away… You have to take it. So…The trappings of power…like big art…became targets. In less than a generation, aristocrats were not quite as interested in publicly advertising their wealth and elite status …Could be dangerous. Elite Patronage becomes focused on smaller and more intimate displays: the interiors of luxury apartments with paintings in frames. This enables more intimate quirky relationships between a patron and the artist who serves them. But the pool of patrons is much smaller. Meanwhile the Industrial Revolution was making all kinds of mass production available…erasing traditional signifiers of wealth through reproduction. Elite patronage may have shriveled...but Nature abhors a vacuum. There was a rising middle class in every city, yearning to experience a taste of the grandeur of an aristocracy that was fast becoming a nostalgic myth. Artists and entrepreneurs who could not serve elite patrons, served these masses with industrial scale presentations mediated through industrial machinery. The popular arts and mass entertainment are born. Artists could choose; take a lot of money from one guy, or a dollar from ten thousand. This split widens until it is nearly irreconcilable. All the way until now. Theme parks are a weird hybrid of this age..big patrons but popular audiences. Baroque scale but Romantic subjects. Visualize this: You’re a Ford engineer and you’re in charge of moving vehicles in an assembly line and now you’re told there’s some movie studio gonna move your cars in their show. “As it turned out, Ford helped us a great deal even though I don’t think they ever trusted that we knew what we were doing, but when we installed the system and the first time we turned it on, it worked, to their great amazement. The patron saint of the Women's Airforce Service Pilots was the female Gremlin known as Fifinella. Disney artist Bill Justice created the unit's insignia in January 1943. WASP logged 60-million air miles during the war and flew every manner of aircraft, from the P-51 fighter, to the B-17 bomber, and even the YP-59A experimental jet. His office was the center of activity controlling the Disney company which during the 1950s and 1960s was rapidly expanding from animated films to live-action films, television shows, and theme parks with the opening of Disneyland. Two years before his death Walt Disney was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the insignia that hangs in his office reads – “Artist and Impresario, in the course of entertaining an age, he has created an American folklore”. I got to step foot into this amazing office that still exists at the heart of the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, California as part of my recent press tour of Walt Disney Imagineering.
