Disaster films aren't often the type to gain critical acclaim, but they do seem to maintain a relatively popular standing in the horror genre, thanks, no doubt, in part to their often absurd action and apocalyptic themes. This Roland Emmerich directed disaster film is one of those that seems to stay in the minds of fans of the subgenre more than most. I was pretty impressed, considering the film came out in 2004, with the visual effects of the film. Sure, if you really focus on the CGI, it looks a little bit dated, but, for the most part, it's all really solid - especially for the scale of the film. The story was fairly typical of the genre, but, for what it's worth, I still enjoyed it. I have certainly seen a lot worse. The various plots were relatively memorable, although, I felt that the actual disaster arc was a little underwhelming - at least in how it ended. Jake Gyllenhaal provided a pretty solid protagonist for the film. He showed plenty of the talent that would help to establish him as a major Hollywood star later on in his career. And, while this certainly isn't his best performance, he still acted better than just about anyone else I'm the film. Dennis Quaid was another who gave a fairly good performance in one of the key roles. However, it's worth saying, he was a little forgettable at times, especially in the second half of the film. In fairness, the writing for his character's arc also failed to aid his cause. Emmy Rossum was the most noteworthy of the supporting cast - she was pretty likable, honestly. I really thought she deserved more screentime. As far as the rest of the cast, I'll mention Dash Mihok, Ian Holm, Austin Nichols and Glenn Plummer. Overall, while this is certainly isn't a great film, it has some pretty exciting action sequences and did well to capture the scale of its disaster premise. Like all decent end-of-the-world films, I do feel like it's a film I can see myself revisiting in the future, if only for some fairly simple entertainment. Stargate- Egyptologist and linguist Daneil Jackson, Ph. D has been asked to translate a series of hieroglyphs by the US Air Force classified project led by Special Operations Colonel Jack O’Neil. Jackson figures out that the hieroglyphs refer to a “Stargate” which uses constellations as special coordinates. Then he’s told the rest of the truth: The hieroglyphs are copied from a giant ring device that when the chevrons algin to the correct coordinates can be used to travel to other worlds. A group is assembled and goes through the Stargate and arrive on the desert planet of Abydos. On the planet they find a race of humans living there who worship the Egyptian God Ra and are slaves under his rule. They also discover that Ra, actually an alien, loves being worshipped by the humans that he brought there centuries ago. [EN] There is an old superstition that the camera has the power to capture the soul. This belief probably doesn't have a single origin. It may have appeared among Native Americans, as well as certain African and Caribbean tribes. Just as their physical image was transferred to photographic paper, so the soul, the emotions of that moment, were transferred and stolen from their owner. A camera has many similarities to a gun. An end that you point at someone, an eye that aims at the target, a shot. Shooting another human being aims to deprive them of something - usually their life, their "soul". I'm not speaking from personal experience, of course, but we can't be the same before and after shooting someone. The shooter too loses something in the process. Something that is taken from him. War photographers throw themselves into the middle of conflicts knowing their role. Armed only with their camera, they accompany the soldiers and record without interfering. They put the lens between themselves and the violence they witness on the battlefield. Men and women die in front of them and, contrary to human impulses to flee, to help, to cry, they wield their camera and capture the last moments of these people's lives. They know that the importance of their work in these scenarios is different. They must be unbiased observers, they must give up a little of their humanity in every moment they photograph, so that others can witness it through their photographs. This kind of demand can't help but change a person. Like a skin that no longer fits, empathy recedes because it is no longer useful to the task in hand. 📽️ Godzilla 🍺 @unbarredbrewery Stoutzilla - Imperial Stout This movie is a hot mess, but I kinda love it, Roland Emerich is just blowing up New York landmarks in the late 90’s which must have made this an awkward watch a couple years later. It comes across as Jurassic park light at points, with Babyzillas playing the part of the velociraptors. And Daddyzilla playing the part of the Trex. The run time is overly long and probably could do with at least 30 minuets shaving off. But I’m still having a good enough time A big movie needs a big beer and this is one of the biggest stouts I’ve ever had, it’s got deep chocolatey flavours with sweet caramel and hint of honey. Tra i film dell’infanzia non si può che citare Stargate. La fase di ricerca, il viaggio, la scoperta ed il sapore di avventura che intrattiene dall’inizio alla fine. La regia non può che essere di Roland Emmerich con Kurt Russel e James Spader come protagonisti. Il film ha dato vita anche a diverse serie (a basso budget) proprio perché lo spunto del portale presente sulla terra e chissà in quali altri mondi è vincente. Il film in sé non ha sviluppi di trama originali, infatti fu aspramente criticato, nonostante ciò per i ragazzi che hanno vissuto le prime serate di Italia 1 era il massimo dell’intrattenimento ed a tanta distanza da quei tempi il ricordo resta ed è sicuramente un lato positivo per questa pellicola. Non servono sempre i voti alti dei critici per valorizzare un prodotto, il pubblico invece può elevarlo e soprattutto farlo sopravvivere nel tempo. In questo caso fa molto piacere non dimenticare un film del genere e soprattutto il periodo in cui l’abbiamo visto per la prima volta. I realized today that Roland Emmerich actually had a pretty solid 3-movie run of Universal Soldier (1992), Stargate (1994), and Independence Day (1996), but then Godzilla (1998) happened and it was all downhill from there. How I feel about the second movie in my Jean-Claude Van Damme double feature, Universal Soldier, is identical to my reaction after revisiting Stargate a few months ago: really cool premise but a number of missed opportunities. Although JCVD never misses an opportunity to show his ass in a movie, the missed opportunities of further exploring the premise in Universal Soldier were probably due to budgetary constraints; it still managed to have some jaw-dropping moments, though, like the shots of stuntmen running down the Hoover Dam on a rappel line. As much as I enjoy JCVD and Dolph Lundgren as physical actors they're not the greatest with dialogue, but like Schwarzenegger turning his weaknesses into strengths by playing a machine in The Terminator (1984), JCVD's and Lundgren's wooden acting actually works for them playing mindless drone soldiers in this movie. When they're freed from those constraints, things get a little shaky but Lundgren is great in full lunatic mode and my favorite JCVD moment had to be the diner scene in which he rediscovers the joy of eating while brawling with a bunch of rednecks.
