Wonderfully different experiences with the same underlying qualities given the different weathers we get up here. Shot one was two nights ago and shot two was last night as a colder front moved in. On of the pleasures unique to the Morgan isn’t just top up or top down driving, but sides on and sides off. One of the treats of evening and night drives is the lovely soft glow of the beautiful dials in the Morgan. I know it’s de rigueur to criticise the BMW shifter on the new Morgan’s (saw a lot of that in the commentary on their most recent release), but I think it’s misplaced on two counts. Putting aside that it’s a fantastic gearbox, I want to focus on the aesthetics. First, I fundamentally disagree that it doesn’t ‘fit’. I think if you’d never seen it before in another car you’d likely think it was an elegant, simple, and beautiful bit of design. Because it is. The fact that it’s in previous generation BMW’s provides a comparative criticism, not an objective one, and one I think is poorly founded. It’s a really impressive bit of design. Second, I think on any car there are inalterable design elements that customers need to spec their particular car around. Maybe it’s a big digital display (pretty much every modern sports car) or a gear lever that looks like an electric shaver (looking at you 992), in any event when you specify your trim and options you work around these pieces. Some designs fit better than other. With the Morgan, when opting for the ZF gearbox, I think too many customers ignore the design element and spec in contrast to it, not in sympathy with it. When I was speccing my car i thought a lot about the gear lever. I made the touch points black and leaned into the chrome highlight with Black door grabs, black moto-lita wheel with metal centre, black stitching on the seats and black carpets. This is carried over to the exterior with further chrome and black accents on the green. As a result I think the design of the interior actually serves to integrate the shifter not highlight it. Relatedly, I also have an Ineos Grenadier @bluey_the_grenadier. It also has this exact same gear box and shifter. I think the same applies there. Many reviewers say the lever stands out. I, again humbly, disagree. I think it perfectly suits and fits the interior. The issue is people think of it as a BMW lever and ignore its intrinsic design qualities. Anyways, that’s probably more than enough about that! What are your thoughts? Have I missed the mark?
I’ve said it before and I’m certain to say it again, but the Plus Four just feels tailor made for the Dales. It’s narrow proportions, timeless beauty, and brisk without being aggressive driving characteristics just make it so perfectly at home up here. Occasionally I toy with the question of if not this than what? All it takes is a drive to settle that. The Plus Four is always lovely, but there are some angles, in some lights, in some surrounds where it just comes together in a particularly astonishing way. I don’t generally shoot the car head on. Then I see photos like this and I wonder why on earth I don’t. I think the pictures I have that have best captured the Oak Green Metallic paint have been from this angle, in the evening, under a canopy of trees. I have no idea why that is, but it seems to be the case. On the driving side of things, evenings like this are ones where you leave the sport exhaust off, and just press along enjoying the rush and rustle of the leaves as you waft past. The evening birds chirp, distant cattle low, and the sheep bleat their greetings as you pass by. Last night was possibly one of the finest evening drives I’ve ever had. I had more pictures that made me go “wow” this morning when I looked through them than from any other single drive. I’ll share them as a series with some thoughts on driving the Morgan and driving these roads. Let’s start with this view over the river Wharfe just up past Hubberholme. The sun was just setting as I left the house and the light in the nearly clear sky was almost as warm as the air. Weekends in the Dales can be pretty frustrating on the roads, with drivers unfamiliar with the narrow lanes or the width of their cars, and the obscene offences of bleached white caravans causing traffic chaos and ruining views. But… In the evenings, when people head home, the roads empty out and serenity returns. In my whole two hours out I maybe saw six other cars. A forma permanece essencialmente Morgan , com a silhueta atarracada mantendo os icônicos arcos das rodas e o longo capô. O corpo é feito à mão em alumínio e leva mais de 250 horas para ser criado. O Midsummer foi baseado no Morgan Plus Six, que existe desde 2019, e antes que você se empolgue, não, você não pode comprar. Todos já estão vendidos previamente. John Looker the first owner of OWP 38 was an early member of the Morgan 4/4 Club and an enthusiastic member of the BARC. I have managed to source a rare, early Morgan 4/4 badge and an equally low numbered BARC badge to go on the grill just as John did back in the day. He was an early member of the Morgan 4/4 Club as it only started in 1951 and his cowled Plus 4 was one of the earliest cars to join. In fact the 4/4 nomenclature was only changed to the Morgan Sports Car Club in early 1971 - when the Moss box Plus 8 was already well established in production.
