Optogenetics vs Chemogenetics? As scientists we use a lot of tools to manipulate the systems we work with. In my lab we use optogenetics and chemogenetics to control the activity of neurons. But what are these techniques? Optogenetics allows us to control neuronal firing with light pulses. Everytime the light comes on, we activate a set of neurons in the brain and increase their activity so that they release neurotransmitters. Light is able to activate neurons because we express a protein called channelrhodopsin in neurons which is responsive to light. For chemogenetics, you can also control neuronal firing, but instead of with light and channelrhodopsin, you use designer drugs that bind to specific designer receptors called DREADDs (Designer receptors activated only by designer drugs). Optogenetics provides temporal control over neuronal firing (can turn the light on and off quickly and neuronal activity will follow the light pulses) where in chemogenetics, neuronal firing can be increased or decreased for several hours from a single administration of the designer drug. Both methods are incredibly useful for determining how different neurons in the brain are working during different states such as sleep/wake, reward, eating, anxiety etc! USC's scientific paper on reducing depression in women was published in the September issue of Nature Neuroscience, which I had the honor of illustrating. Check it out! Nature Neuroscience is a monthly scientific journal published by Nature Publishing Group. Fluctuations in reproductive hormone levels are associated with mood disruptions in women, such as in postpartum and perimenopausal depression. However, the neural circuit mechanisms remain unclear. Here we report that medial preoptic area (MPOA) GABAergic neurons mediate multifaceted depressive-like behaviors in female mice after ovarian hormone withdrawal (HW), which can be attributed to downregulation of activity in Esr1 (estrogen receptor-1)-expressing GABAergic neurons. 🇺🇸 🔎 Científicos de la Universidad de Texas desarrollaron un escáner cerebral que utiliza inteligencia artificial que ha sido entrenada para convertir imágenes de resonancia magnética en textos que guardan relación con lo que pasa por las mentes de las personas. "More than 40 editors have resigned from two leading neuroscience journals in protest against their article-processing charges (APCs). The editors of NeuroImage and NeuroImage: Reports plan to start a new journal hosted by the non-profit publisher MIT Press. NeuroImage’s publisher, Elsevier, says that its fees are lower than competitors’ and provide “above average quality for below average price”. APCs are usually paid from researchers’ grant funds and mean that the article is free to readers." 🌿 Fractal love 🌿 You know some people have a million pictures of their dogs, or children on their phone? Well I have a million photos of ferns & bracken. I could say so much about this incredible plant, it is so clever!! And it has so much symbolism to me (hence having one tattooed on my arm - swipe to see) and also to many cultures and traditions across the world. It’s my favourite!! However, they are also unbelievably satisfying to look at. Do you know why? Fractals. A what?… FRACTALS. A fractal is a mathematical pattern that the laws of nature repeat at different scales. Research shows that looking at fractal patterns can reduce stress by up to 60 percent!!! It seems this kind of stress reduction most often occurs because of a certain physiological resonance within the eye, it changes our brain waves, and studies show an innate, pre wired preference for looking at them even in babies. And as we look at them stress hormones decrease and we have a greater heart rate variability which means your parasympathetic nervous system is activated - the part of your nervous system that promotes rest, calm & our bodies are in repair and health maintenance mode. So a “fern leaf” is a certain shape, and pattern. Called the WHOLE FERN, made up of FERN FRONDS. Each frond is a whole fern, made up of fern fronds…do you see where this is going??? Order. Not chaos. We also see these fractal patterns across nature - they create order in our mind, they are soothing - snowflakes, trees, clouds, blood vessels, nautical shells, some succulents… and broccoli ! Um estudo da Universidade de Buffalo e da Escola de #Medicina Monte Sinai (ambas dos Estados Unidos), publicado no site da revista #NatureNeuroscience, revelou que isolar-se do convívio social por um período prolongado pode provocar alterações cerebrais que levam a mais isolamento. No #experimento, ratos adultos foram isolados por oito semanas para que chegassem a um estado semelhante ao da #depressão. Depois desse período, eles foram apresentados a um rato que nunca haviam visto antes. Apesar de serem normalmente sociáveis, aqueles que tinham sido isolados não mostraram qualquer interesse em interagir e evitaram o novo animal.

Il punto cardine è che esistono delle disparità che rischiano di alterare i risultati delle ricerche. Quello delle neuroscienze è uno dei campi di ricerca in cui più di ogni altro si dovrebbe fare attenzione ai bias cognitivi che la influenzano: ovvero quelle distorsioni cognitive che portano a considerare solo una parte dei dati con il rischio di conclusioni incomplete. Nature Neuroscience parla di come le neuroscienze subiscano l’influenza di bias radicati in questo ambito. Ad esempio: più del 95% degli studi riguardanti i disturbi del Sistema Nervoso Centrale sono stati svolti su persone di discendenza europea, che risultano quindi sovrarappresentate. Il rischio è quello di portare a una generalizzazione dei risultati. 📊 Anche il progresso di alcune tecniche è stato poco inclusivo: in oltre 100 anni d’uso dell'EEG per ricerca, non esistono ancora dei sistemi per ridurre il rumore di fondo che si registra in soggetti con capelli dal fusto grosso e riccio, come nelle popolazioni di origine africana. Così come è stato dimostrato che la registrazione della conduttanza cutanea per misurare l’attività emozionale può essere influenzata dall’etnia, oltre che dall’aver subito episodi di razzismo, portando alla registrazione di dati significativamente differenti per alcune minoranze. 👳‍♂️ Individui già poco rappresentati in alcune ricerche rischiano quindi di essere esclusi anche a causa di differenze fenotipiche che mostrano dati diversi da quelli attesi, proprio perché ci sono ancora troppi pochi studi inclusivi verso alcune minoranze. 👉 Lo scopo di queste pubblicazioni è mettere in luce alcune disparità presenti anche nel mondo della ricerca, esortando chi ne fa parte a sfidare ogni forma di discriminazione nel quotidiano, e proponendo cambiamenti che possano portare a una scienza più equa e rappresentativa per ogni individuo. #NeurobiologiaSapienza #università #universitàsapienza #roma #universitasapienzaroma #neurobiologia #iscrizione #iscrizioneuniversità #laureamagistrale #neuroscienze #natureneuroscience
