I was delighted to receive this catalogue for the upcoming PST: Art and Science Collide exhibit titled “Out of Site” that opens this Saturday May 18 at the Autry Museum in Los Angeles. I am thrilled to have my work included in the exhibition, in particular the KYDOIMOS video from my “Proving Ground” series (which features 50,000 still images of weapons testing sites and an amazing score by composer and musician @chriskallmyer). The exhibit and the accompanying catalogue explore the invisible landscapes of the American West through the interwoven forces of art and technology, revealing matrices of power and surveillance alongside the human and environmental fallout they often leave behind. The catalogue features artwork, essays, and interviews by so many of my respected artist colleagues, including Bremner Benedict, John Divola, Lewis DeSoto, Nina Elder, Peter Goin, my beloved teacher Emmet Gowin, Mark Klett, Michael Light, Richard Misrach, Hillary Pushkin, Trevor Paglen, Mark Ruwudel, Kim Stringfellow, Will Wilson, and others. The exhibition and the research into this formidable topic was curated by Amy Scott (Autry Museum), Jason Weems (University of California, Riverside), William L. In celebration of World Soil Day (December 5), join @shg1970 and @prosperingbackyards for a Soil Time! series on Saturday, December 9, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. as part of SHG's Family Workshop at the East Los Angeles County Library. What are the treatments used at Prospering Backyards? We test three treatments in our research. Treatment Z: Zeolites Treatment C (Control): Compost and mulch Treatment T: Zeolites, compost and mulch Each community scientist has 3 sites. These three sites will allow us to monitor the effectiveness of each treatment’s ability to absorb lead from the soil. We’re halfway through our research phase, testing the use of zeolites and their power to absorb lead in our soil! Today we celebrate Joel, a community scientist with Prospering Backyards! Check out Joel’s site installation with support from research partners David @tawa_compost, Jordan @jordanscameralens and TAWA Compost students! Celebrating another site installation with Community Scientist Sonia and Research Partners Sam and Lila with support from Valerie! We collect eDNA (environmental DNA) samples three times throughout our year long research. During the application of zeolites, eDNA samples allow us to monitor how microbial communities are affected! We couldn’t do it without you, Research Partners! Research Partners are volunteers who partner with Community Scientists to conduct our research. They play a critical role in the project by supporting community scientists to collect samples, ensuring samples arrive safely at the @nhmla_gems lab and offering support and input throughout the project! Both Research Partners and Community Scientists have participated in sample collection training and safety. This includes wearing gloves, masks and labcoats while sampling and handling each sample with care and following each sampling step. We even screen printed our PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to show our pB love! Community Scientists are at the center of our work. But, what exactly is a Community Scientist? Our partners at @NatureinLA at the @NHMLA use this definition, “Community scientists are volunteers who partner with scientists to answer real-world questions.” In Prospering Backyards, each community scientist brings their own knowledge, lived experience and unique questions that help guide our research. Community scientists test the Prospering backyards remediation method by collecting samples, offering insights on their observations and working together to develop a clear understanding of how this information collected can serve our community. Together our Community Scientists, Research Partners and Lead Scientists are paving the way towards understanding how we can heal our soil and our communities using zeolites.
