Julian Sartorius (@juliansartorius_) is a Swiss drummer and percussionist whos approach to music is driven by a profound curiosity for the acoustic potential of everyday objects and natural settings. In his album ‘Hidden Tracks: Basel – Genève’ (Everest Records, 2017), Sartorius embarked on a 200 km trek armed only with drumsticks and recording gear, tapping into the myriad sounds and textures of objects he encountered along the way. This expedition was not just a physical journey but a voyage into the heart of sound itself, capturing its raw essence in its natural habitat. In his performances and recordings, Sartorius is known for his adept modulation of instrument sounds, continuously adding and adjusting elements to unfold new auditory worlds. ⚡ The meticulously construed, electronic landscape formed by sound installations in 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐤 𝐀𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐢’s solo-exhibition 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑆ℎ𝑜𝑟𝑒 / 𝑎 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝐼’𝑑 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑒 are never about sound alone – or, indeed, sound is for Atoui so much more than our common sense-idea of it. By combining musical instruments, electronic devices and computers, as well as everyday objects, but also by experimenting with expanded forms of listening, Atoui engages with political and social questions. Through his experiments with sound, Atoui wants to break through the traditional power relations between sense and reason, sensitivity and language, technology and craft. As an alternative, he simultaneously invokes perception, intuition, action, interpretation, memory and imagination as the catalysts for personal expression and identity formation. In this way, Atoui’s sound installations create non-hierarchical learning environments, in which all these sensations and activities can be explored in a connected and egalitarian manner. In 𝑂𝑟𝑔𝑎𝑛 𝑊𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛 (2022), we find an installation comprised as if it were a living body: a network of tubes that connect a computer to a ventilator and various organ modules, seemingly acting as a brain, lungs, organs and a heart that interact to create mutually adaptive sounds. Fifteen years ago my little baba was born…it was half five in the morning when he pop his tiny head into this broken and magical world. Many things have happened since though our love remains strong even stronger today. And to make this week even more special I spend few days recovering from an intense week nesting on a boat, tuning into the what’s next…. The week ended brilliantly at @afo_olomouc where I joined sound artist and fellow troublemaker @jamie_perera in a lively conversation about the polycrisis, activism, climate justice and staying with the trouble. In times like these is difficult to imagine the end of genocide and capitalist modernity. And yet this week we have lucky to have witnessed a student rebellion going viral, mounting international pressure and the collapse of an empire. What’s next is up to us. È nell’alterazione che si inizia a produrre movimento e suono. Il risultato che ne consegue è duplice: sonoro e visivo. Il visual si sviluppa sotto forma di tavole visive digitali, raccolte anche in diversi formati cartacei. Il sound si sviluppa a partire dalla catalogazione e registrazione dei suoni, post-prodotti e riarrangiati per ogni singola traccia audio.
