New shoots are appearing as the water levels drops in the north scrape . The area is being drained and planted with sunflowers, millet and quinoa for the songbirds. The water levels on the reserve are managed in rotation, so as one area is drained, another is flooded. I'm not sure how well this works, I'm curious about how this affects the invertebrates and aquatic life. Another new location to visit! Just 45 minutes from King's Lynn, across the river into Lincolnshire, a wonderful array of winter waterbirds at #rspbframptonmarsh. Constant movement in the water, frequent swirls of birds in the air and wonderful sounds of bird calls, honks and whistles. Stopping frequently as we walked, and then more leisurely sitting in the hides, we gazed through binoculars at so many wildfowl including my personal favourites, the elegant Avocets. Peregrine falcon Falco peregrinus Tiercel (male) and falcon (female) peregrine with wigeon prey showing the size difference between them. Tiercel is a French word for "a third" and as seen above the male is almost exactly a third smaller than the falcon. I'm unsure if these are actually a pair of breeding peregrines or a mother with her adult son. My previous post is a video taken of this pair where the female seems to feed the male and then lets him take the carcass from her. If it is the case that there is no other adult male on the scene coming into breeding season, and he is old enough to reproduce, will this result in inbreeding as has been reported in raptors previously? I wasn't sure about posting these as they were very distant, but interesting to see the amazing aerobatic ability of the Lapwing. You can see in the last image the bird is almost completely upside down, although in all pictures the head is the right way up !
