Last week, I made my annual visit to Great Smoky Mountains National Park with another group of enthusiastic photographers. Despite a week of very early mornings, long days with lots of driving, and bear jams, we all came away impressed, inspired, and happy for the experience. The Smoky Mountains are beautiful during every season, but springtime is my favorite. Everywhere in the park is lush with flowing water, colorful wildflowers, active wildlife, and a strong sense of nature's beauty and strength. Every aspect of it is tangible and captivating. But there is more. Since my first visit a decade ago, I have embraced spring in the Smoky's as a nature photographer's paradise. There are several "must-see" locations throughout the park, but some resonate more profoundly with me than others. They resonate for what is felt; not seen. Roaring Fork Nature Trail is such a place. The gently flowing brook cascades over thousands of moss-covered rocks, past hundreds of enormous rhododendron bushes, and under countless trees. Each time I am here, immersed in the sights and sounds of nature, I feel this small brook breathes life into everything it touches. That includes me. On a very cold night my Aurora alert went off jumped out of bed looked out the window and saw the northern lights dancing in the sky! Tried to alert the others but they were in a deep sleep and didn’t hear their phones ringing unfortunately! My room mate got up and we ventured outside and started capturing photos! Then the friendly horses on farm where we were staying decided to come up to us thinking we had feed for them! It was hard to get a good photo of them because they kept moving following us! The train from Ella to Nuwara Eliya was an eagerly anticipated stage in our journey through Sri Lanka, billed as a beautiful section we had high hopes… When you see so many amazing videos and photographs from the “places” to visit in the world it is easy to have your expectations raised to a level that might just not match your real life experience…they say never meet your heros. What about taking that train? No need to worry on this section of the train, it was beautiful, scenic and a wonderful experience. Both sides of the carriage offered views at various stages as we climbed towards our destination. The majority of that fun came from watching people hang from a train doorway as it weaved along the hillside and through tunnels. Terrifyingly amusing as people faced the wrong way for photos as their friend snapped away from a nearby window. One girl began leaning just as the train disappeared into a tunnel, I was standing right by her and just had to walk away as she chuckled, happily still alive and intact on the train. Now, I can’t say much because I’ve been photographed front flipping on the edge of Victoria Falls so I understand the allure and the Kodak confidence in getting the shot. Tom and I have done some silly adventures in our time, and calculated risks are always part of the game! @t25lemon was happy to hang from the train whilst I made some shots, I trusted his judgement even though he did nearly get taken out by a rail in the bridge! Start Point (Friday Flashback - literally!) So where did that week go😮 This photo is from last Friday's trip to the South West, motivated by my ticket for A Blaze of Feather at the iconic Minack Theatre. I know the coastline of the South Hams really well so I got to Start Point well before sunrise, hoping for a bit of an orange dawn glow. I had travelled down the M5 under clear skies and all the way past Newton Abbot and Totnes. Arriving at the Start Point car park I was somewhat disappointed by the increasing cloud. There were chinks of pinky-orange in amongst the clouds but nothing like the big orange sky I was hoping for!
