A tribute to the creativity and skill of the artisans whose works once lit up Hong Kong’s streets, ‘Frail Silver of The Climbing Stars’, a neon artwork by British-Chinese artist Faye Wei Wei, will be auctioned by Phillips tomorrow. Proceeds from the sale will support a new artist-in-residence programme for emerging Hong Kong artists at the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA) in Manchester, UK. Commissioned by the @britishcouncilhk. Faye Wei Wei’s work embodies the spirit of dualities between art and science, as well as English and Chinese in Hong Kong.

承蒙英國文化協會的邀請，我為一個heavy到不得了的論壇做了幾小時的主持。之所以heavy，既是論壇的嘉賓份量，也是論壇的題目：「21世紀需要的技能」。可能你不覺得這個題目有什麼沉重，但這是一個新時代給我們「大人」的包袱。 . 坐在曾俊華先生和一眾學者之間，我聽到也學到了很多；21世紀需要什麼，他們知道，and guess what，其實我們也一早知道。老生常談的3項所謂技能：emotional intelligence、cognitive flexibility、creativity。當口號喊出來當然容易，但要實實際際「培養」這些技能，我到現在也找不到一個確切的方向。或者應該說，方向是找到了，但要實踐一點也不容易。這個方向就是教育。 . 現在的教育出現了什麼問題？有位英國學校的校長跟我說，他不久前為一位香港學生面試。校長問學生：「Facial recognition這科技牽涉了深層的個人資料，我們的倫敦underground也會用到這科技，你覺得 facial recognition這事情值得關注嗎？」學生回答之後，表情滿有信心，可能認為自己的答案不錯，但校長看在眼內，覺得難以置信。 . 「如果是倫敦underground便好，因為資料由政府管理，」學生說，「但像蘋果手機一樣，資料由私營公司管理，後果便可以很嚴重了。」 . 這個答案有什麼問題？私營管就有問題，政府管就沒問題，這是什麼荒謬的邏輯？是什麼樣的課本、老師、科目，讓一個學生覺得私營就是千瘡百孔，而政府就是純潔無瑕？難道小時候沒有讀過George Orwell的Animal Farm嗎？這個學生的答案所帶出的不是一個政治問題，而是最基本的學習問題：他們的批判思考在哪裏？別誤會，批判不一定是反政府，批判是當別人這樣做或者這樣想的時候，學生在選擇跟隨或不跟隨之前，他們的考量到底有多全面。 . 再深入一層，缺乏批判或創造力，到底是為什麼？也許是因為動機錯誤。 . 大部份學生努力的動機，都是源於恐懼。「低分」的恐懼，被父母責備的恐懼，考不上大學的恐懼。就算是一個最沒有經驗的教育心理學家也可以告訴你，fear inhibits creativity。學生一味就是讀書，越怕越讀，越讀越怕，考試技巧是有了，但隨之而來的代價便是獨立思考的能力被一步一步的減弱了。為什麼有那麼多的學生在中學考取了最好的成績，然後在大學便「現形」了？因為中學是一個「帶你到答案的地方」，而大學是啟發你去找答案的地方。大學是什麼人工作的地方？教授。教授在大學幹什麼？研究。為什麼要研究？因為他們還沒有找到答案。 . 如果真是動機錯誤，那麼這個千古難題－如何讓學生從學習中找到樂趣－該是怎樣化解？最近十年流行的答案是，改革教育。但一群真正為下一代著想的教育家現在高唱反調，聲稱改革無用。他們說，本身是一個爛制度，無論怎樣改革也同樣是個爛制度。正如喜歡玩改裝車的發燒友一樣，你有沒有見過他們「改車」會改比亞迪？冇，點解？你們現在應該有答案了。 . 要讓學生擁有真正的學習熱情，我們不是需要一次教育改革，而是需要重新定義教育。要評估一個學生的「成績」，便該根據她或他的長處來評估。語言好的，頭可以抬得高；邏輯好的，頭抬得一樣高；音樂、畫畫、歷史、跳舞，各色各樣的創作，無論哪一方面好，頭還是可以抬得一樣高，這便是有教無類。 . 英國著名高中Tonbridge曾經有一道這樣的入學試題，要學生思考以下這句話的意義：A scientist looks at an object and wants to know how it came to be like that, and an artist looks at the same thing and wants to invent a creative use for it，到底誰更偉大？我知道你很想我直接帶你走到答案的地方，但我還是想啓發你去找到這個答案。 . #陳思銘 #csmsamuel #ukchitchat #戀上英識 #蘋果日報 #britanniastudylink #英識教育 @britishcouncilhk #sparkhk2019 #britishcouncil #britanniastudylink

相信每位小學生都寫過一篇《我的志願》嘅文章，你仲記得小時候嘅夢想嗎？ . 早前同大家分享過一個故事，有家長話自己小時候好渴望成為醫生，但唔成功，所以現在將當年的夢想寄托在兒子身上。 . 父母希望仔女成為律師、工程師、醫生，我非常明白，有邊個唔望子成龍呢？印度電影《打死不離3兄弟》其中一幕令我印象特別深刻：印度父母從嬰兒喺媽媽肚裡已經不停灌輸做工程師嘅重要性，並經常為子女祈福，希望佢哋成為工程師。 . 但如果我哋睇遠一點，機械人嘅發展已經逐步取代一些傳統勞動性工作，而人工智慧Alpha Go亦打敗國際圍棋冠軍，我們應該思考如何轉移知識和技術去面對世界的轉變。隨著人工智慧和大數據的發展，今日好多新興產業在八、九十年代仍未出現。同樣地，有2030年的職業在今天仍未興起。 . 這意味著社會有無限可能，同時孩童亦有巨大的創造力和潛能。家長和學校只要逐步引領學生自主地探索佢哋嘅興趣，給予多點肯定便可以。英國教育經常強調「條條大路通羅馬」，成功並無一定的方程式，亦不會向學生灌輸一定要做律師、醫生或工程師先係成功嘅概念。相反，英國寄宿學校透過不同領袖訓練、野外定向、團隊訓練，致力培養學生終生學習和正面的態度，即使遇到困難也具極高的抗逆能力。 . 計劃永遠趕不上變化，讓學生自主學習、激發創意，才是雙贏之道。 @britanniastudylink @britishcouncilhk #britanniastudylink #ukstudy #英國留學 #海外留學 #英識教育 #英國文化協會 #陳思銘 #britanniastudylink #britishcouncil #sparkhk2019

上星期六主持英國文化協會SPARK座談會後，有好多對教育嘅啟發想同大家分享。 - 現今科技發展日新月異，瑞士有法律事務所已經逐步引入人工智能技術為客戶分析案情同計算勝算，大幅減低出錯率。連律師都人工智能化，我們應該重新反思教育嘅意義，如何提升未來下一代嘅軟技能，以應對未來挑戰會係一大課題。 - 聯合國教科文組織發表2030教育發展藍圖，其中美國著名智庫布魯金斯學會指出，不同持份者都應該努力改革教育，思維唔可以再停留喺20世紀。學生應該致力發展批判思考、創意力和同理心，為未來成為國際市民做好凖備，積極開拓國際視野。 - 英國大學教育多年來其中最受歡迎的一科係PPE，即是Philosophy, Politics and Economics (哲學、政治學及經濟學學位)。牛津大學喺20年代創立PPE課程，著重學生多角度、全面性思考，透過跨學科的思維訓練互補不足。課程特別強調認知能力、邏輯思考和對哲學的探討。英國歷史上唔少政界精英都係從PPE出身，例如英國前首相希思、韋爾遜和卡梅倫。 英國教育可貴之處係「軟硬兼施」，除咗教導學生硬技能，即書本上和較理論化嘅專業知識，仲會培育學生軟技能，鼓勵佢哋全方位發展。無論音樂、繪畫、戲劇、設計，學生都能夠激發創新能力，情緒智力和認知靈活性。 - 每個父母都希望子女成為未來嘅領袖，但其實畀孩子多一點支持和空間，畀佢哋探索更多可能性，擁抱創新，先能夠開拓新天地。 . @britanniastudylink @britishcouncilhk #britanniastudylink #ukstudy #英國留學 #海外留學 #英識教育 #英國文化協會 #陳思銘 #britanniastudylink #britishcouncil #sparkhk2019

Eye of the Storm- absolutely fantastic show. I can hardly believe the artists started rehearsal only three weeks ago but put on a pretty impressive show.
