Throwback to Karyn Marshall, the American Olympic weightlifter who won the first women's world championship in weightlifting, held in 1987. She also set 60 American and world records in women's weightlifting and in 1985 became the first woman in history to clean and jerk over 300 lb (136 kg), which she did with a lift of 303 pounds (137 kg). CLUSTER SETS // You might have noticed our Strength Space classes are following a different structure this week, now involving ‘cluster sets’. Cluster sets are a great way to get more heavy sets and reps into your workouts whilst also minimising fatigue. Are bodies are extremely efficient and a lot of the energy used during a traditional set of strength training (eg. one set of 6 reps of a back squat) is regained very quickly - roughly around 30 seconds. Cluster sets involve using an intra-set (within set break of around 30-45 seconds. For example, 3 reps, 30 seconds rest and then another 3 reps, 30 seconds rest and a final set of 3 reps. You would then have completed 9 reps total in 3 lots of 3. These reps would all be using moderately - very heavy loads (75-90% of the heaviest weight you can complete 1 repetition with) however with the break between every few reps you don’t accumulate as much fatigue and can therefore get a greater volume of work done in the session and within the training week. Morning Sun + Banded Back Squats 👌🏼 Introducing bands into some of our programming this fortnight to maximise the work being done throughout the entire strength curve (also known as, the difficulty a certain points of the exercise). Basically it makes the weight heavier at the “easiest” part of the exercise. In this situation, the resistance is heaviest at the top of the squat and the tension then decreases as you move towards the “hardest” part. On the home stretch for our Strength Program 💪🏼 Into Week 7 and we’re looking STRONG! At this point of the program, we have cycled back to our key lifts; Bench Press, Deadlift and Box Squat, however have increased the intensity by building towards 2 RM efforts over the duration of the session. This gets our clients lifting closer to their 1 RM in preparation for re-testing next week. Recovery: For the training stimulus to have its intended purposes or adapt there needs to be proper recovery. Inflammatory response due to training and exercising is natural but in order for your muscles to keep performance as high as your training demands you have to ratchet up your recovery. Recovery is very important in that when it is not properly accounted for the training stimulus could become a detriment to your physical well being. Some ways to recover includes; A consistent sleep pattern/schedule Adequate sleeping hours Proper nutrition Active recovery Heat and cold therapy Massage therapy Supplementation My Active recovery for dealing with sore/injured lower body muscles has been sled dragging. This low-intensity exercise promotes blood flow into the targeted muscle groups. So next time your muscles are sore or might’ve been strained from a workout don’t just sit and relax and wait for it to heal. Do a little more than that. If it is an achy joint, seek help from a professional who might be able to help. #liftingwithpurpose #strengthspace

Program Testing: Day 1. Setting some baseline 1 RMs in the gym today in preparation for our 6 week program kicking off on Monday. All our participants will have their results tracked and progress monitored over the program and be provided with weekly updates and check ins from our team (and program partners) to ensure they stay on track with their strength goals 👏🏼. General consensus from the crew in today was that they loved having the chance to push themselves in a maximal lift and are all eager to see how much they can improve! So why are rack pulls making a common appearance in our program? 😜 The Rack Pull, similar to the deadlift, is classified as a hinge movement. Put simply, a hinge movement is when hip flexion and extension are the predominant movements. Some of the most common daily movements are hinge patterns. For example, getting out of bed, lifting your child off the floor or grabbing your Shania Twain cd from the bottom shelf... all of these movements are predominately hip flexion and extension. Although very similar, what separates the Rack Pull from a Deadlift is the limited range in motion and reduction of anterior (or front) lower limb contribution. By doing so greater focus is placed on the posterior (or back) chain e.g. glutes and back muscles. 😍 Often neglected, these regions have an undeniably important role to play in day-to-day functionality, reduction of injury and overall posture. Without this specialised activation and utilisation of these large muscle groups our bodies may compensate with smaller, less capable muscles potentially leading to pain or even injury. 🙌 By performing this exercise on a regular basis, the posterior chain will be strengthened, grip strength will be enhanced, and correct movement about the hip will be developed. Let's talk about weights, baby! Let's talk about you, and me! 💪 In our strength classes, you will be taught the fundamentals of the primary compound movements and with the incorporation of accessory exercises, this program will develop full body strength. We also educate around the importance of the rest times between the sets. We use individual spreadsheets to track each client’s progression through the program, meaning that within each class – whilst clients might all be doing the same exercises – each individual has the chance to work harder or work less depending on where they are at. 😘 The small class numbers mean that the trainer is able to adjust, coach and progress you through the session, ensuring that progressions are relative to you and your ability; rather than “let’s just add on a bit more”. 👊 There are many Strength Space sessions on the schedule, including Super Strength on Saturday, followed by a cheeky coffee! ☕ #thefitspace #strengthspace
