#KnowledgeBomb Nr. 146: Is Ashwagandha effective for reducing Stress and Anxiety? One study assessed the effect of supplementing with ashwagandha on anxiety and perceived stress in people with mild to moderate stress and anxiety. 50 participants from India without apparent health conditions were involved in this study. The participants were assigned to take a daily dose of either placebo* or 500mg of ashwagandha + 5mg of piperine. *(A placebo is any treatment that has no active properties, such as a sugar pill). Stress and anxiety levels were assessed at the beginning of the study, day 30, and day 60 (the end of the study). In the beginning and at the end of the study, quality of life was also assessed. The results of this study showed that, compared to the beginning of the study and the placebo group, stress and anxiety levels decreased and quality of life improved in the ashwagandha group. The reductions in both stress and anxiety with ashwagandha appear to have been clinically important, meaning the effects should be large enough to produce a noticeable improvement in symptoms. One thing to keep in mind is that the participants had mild to moderate stress and anxiety, but were not specifically diagnosed with a mental health condition. Time and training age in the gym are real constraints that need to be considered when working with combat sport athletes & hobbyists. This is why investing time into the big rocks that are going to provide the biggest bang for your buck needs to be considered, rather than sport-specific fluff that has no way of measuring transferability and offers little training stimulus. Let the sport take care of skill development, and utilize the weight room to build up the physical attributes you need as an individual to become a better athlete. Recap, 3. 5 Ways Regular Movement can Improve your Mental Health. Ever wondered how you can improve your mental health? Regular movement (i.e., regular exercise) is the answer. Five ways regular movement (exercise) can improve your mental health: 1. Engaging in regular movement helps reduce stress levels. When we move, our bodies release endorphins (a hormone), which act as natural mood lifters and stress reducers. 2. Physical activity is a stimulator of BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic) production, and BDNF (which is a protein) plays a crucial role in enhancing mood. Aerobic exercises, strength training, and even yoga have been shown to elevate BDNF levels. Regular movement positively impacts mood partly due to BDNF (protein) release. 3. Regular movement leads to more regulated sleep patterns, a good night's sleep increases overall mental health, as you'll wake up feeling refreshed and energised the next morning. 4. Moving often and regularly can help you achieve physical goals and therefore make you feel accomplished. When you feel accomplished your self-esteem goes up. Higher self-esteem is correlated with better mental well-being. 5. SHOULD I DO IT? 👀 It’s been a while since I gave an update here and I can’t believe it’s been 12 weeks already since I started my building phase. Now, the highlight since my last update: I finally signed with a new coach @joshmbirch and am super excited to be part of @teamgoble_ . I was dragging it out for way too long, thought I could do it on my own. But the more clients I take onboard myself, the more I was craving that support to get me to the next level. 🔥 Plus, I am more and more considering to have my stage debut with the @ifbbproleagueoz in 2025 - and of course, I want the best coaching team on board for that. Should I really do it? 🙃 Besides the fact that I am in best hands, here is a snapshot of what else has happened: 🆕 Coach means NEW training program ⚖️ roughly 2kg more since the start of my build 🥣 currently on 3,200 calories (and it’s going uuuupp) 🏋🏻‍♀️ 5x weights, no cardio I have some days in between where I struggle a little with my self-perception but the majority of time I am feeling really good.
