Moments captured from resident artist Jamie Kroeger's creative arts workshop with local grade 4/5 students! 🌿📓 In this workshop session based on "Observation," Fulford Elementary students were gifted field books and instructed to draw inspiration from the outdoors. They created sketches that they then transformed into unique, hand-embossed copper brooches! ARTIST FEATURE — @veronicaclassen re:location — A Multidisciplinary Art Exhibition Veronica is a multi disciplinary artist, teacher, art director and specialist in miniatures for animation. Across genres her work explores how form relates to the body through textiles, architecture and scale. Veronica taught theatre design at Northwestern University in Chicago and at Concordia University in Montreal. She is an MFA graduate of Northwestern University’s Costume and Set Design program and holds a BFA from Concordia University’s Design for the Theatre program. ARTIST FEATURE — @theoryisland re:location — A Multidisciplinary Art Exhibition Randy Lee Cutler is an interdisciplinary artist and writer. Taking the form of walks, performance, collage, printed matter, video, sound and creative/critical writing, her practice weaves together themes of materiality and intuition. She has produced numerous hybrid projects that engage with conversation, research and science to connect with audiences in diverse ways. Since 2019 Randy has divided her time between Vancouver and Salt Spring Island. In Vancouver she is a Professor at Emily Carr University on the unceded Coast Salish territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. Her island time on the unceded territory of the Hul’qumi’num and SENĆOŦEN speaking peoples includes gardening, stargazing and learning about its human and more than human communities. ARTIST FEATURE — @elihorn_ re:location — A Multidisciplinary Art Exhibition Eli Horn is a Canadian artist and designer based on Salt Spring Island, BC, located on the unceded and traditional territories of the Coast Salish People. Eli is a founding partner and creative director of collaborative design practice Memory Studio. Eli’s artwork oscillates between figuration and abstraction, exploring tensions between the whole, its parts, and that emergent ‘more than’. He works with both traditional and digital media, with a focus on works on paper, where the mediums find common ground. ARTIST FEATURE — @pat.mccallum re:location — A Multidisciplinary Art Exhibition Born in Penticton BC, but living most of his life on Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands, Patrick McCallum has spent the majority of his career in the creative sector. Essentially self-taught, McCallum has worked in a wide range of roles including: commercial illustrator, art director, graphic designer, copywriter, comic book creator, graphic facilitator, storyboard artist, and art instructor until committing to fine art full time in 2015. McCallum is an Interdisciplinary Artist, working primarily with the human figure in a wide range of mediums from drawing and painting to screen printing and kiln formed glass. His work also extends to interactive sculpture, murals and site-specific installations. ARTIST FEATURE — @kerryweinrauchphotography re:location — A Multidisciplinary Art Exhibition Kerry Weinrauch is a Galiano Island, BC based photographer working in 35mm, medium and polaroid formats, both film and digital. She has a degree in fashion design and comes from a background of fashion and costume design in the film industry and attended Emily Carr University of Art and Design to study photography. Kerry creates her images “in the camera” and intentionally does not photoshop or edit her photos. Inspired by 17th and 18th century classic portrait paintings, Kerry combines her love of costumes and fashion with her artistic practice, creating photographs that manifest classic works of art. ARTIST FEATURE — James K-M re:location — A Multidisciplinary Art Exhibition James K-M’s painting and sculpture is abstract, geometric and metaphysical. Between 1991 and 2006, K-M created digital paintings and exhibited interactive works worldwide. In 1997 he was nominated Bravo TV Digital Artist of the Year (1997) and went on to curate five annual digital print exhibitions, and co-found the Digitalis Digital Art Society (2001-2005). In 2012 K-M was artist-in-residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, Connecticut. In 2013, following a trip to Mexico City, he turned to sculpture. Since 2020, James K-M has lived on Salt Spring Island, BC. He has been painting and exhibiting in Canada and internationally since 1978. Brent experiments with inter-cultural conversations around land, Indigenous ecological legacies, traditional knowledge and technologies, 2S+/queer ecologies, and language survival often engaging in contested public space. ARTIST FEATURE — @stasia.garraway re:location — A Multidisciplinary Art Exhibition Stasia Garraway is a multidiciplinary artist whose primary mediums have been photography and text-based work. Last year she started to use drawing and watercolour as ways to further explore her themes of interest, and to deepen her intimacy with observation, physical process, and the environments in which she resides. Since graduating from Emily Carr in 2012, Stasia has been developing a body of work that documents her relationship with plants, seasons, and landscapes in varied geographic locations. For the last 27 years, Stasia has considered Salt Spring Island a home-base, as well as a prominent influence on the concepts in her work. ARTIST FEATURE — @dinagm re:location — A Multidisciplinary Art Exhibition Dina González Mascaró is an Argentine – Canadian artist, born and raised in Argentina and trained at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Buenos Aires, where she received her MFA in sculpture and contributed as an educator. In 2000, Dina won Argentina’s National Art Prize, the Premio Antorchas and was awarded a residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts, in Canada. Her time in Banff led to a yearlong residency at the Western Front, from 2001 to 2002. This marked the beginning of her Vancouver – based multifaceted art practice. Her relentless pursuit of expression finds form in various mediums including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, installation, and objects, not excluding the fine craft of jewellery. ARTIST FEATURE — @germkoh re:location — A Multidisciplinary Art Exhibition Germaine Koh is an artist and organizer whose work ranges widely across media. Her work adapts familiar objects, everyday actions, and common spaces to create situations that look at the significance of communal experiences and the connections between people, technology, and natural systems. She is a 2023 winner of the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts and for the 2023-24 academic year she is a Shadbolt Fellow at Simon Fraser University. She served as the City of Vancouver’s first Engineering Artist in Residence in 2018-20 and as the 2021 Koerner Artist in Residence at the University of British Columbia. A focal point of Annika’s work has always been the Moving Picture in some format. The desire to capture a fleeting moment, a glimpsed reflection in time and place fuels her artistic endeavours. She is committed to fostering community and facilitating dynamic and engaging happenings, artistic collaborations, creative explorations and exhibitions. Matt Robertson: Matt Robertson is a British-born, Canadian-based, 3x Grammy-nominated composer, producer, and musical director. I’ve been printing up a storm in the studio- working on a new fantastical series that speaks to the notion of memory, and the experiences, texts, textures, and objects that make up the places we call home. I’m still very much in the experimental phase, but the sparks are coming and it’s a great place to be in. 🙂I’d like to give a big thank you the @saltspringarts council for their support through the Susan Benson Award, which has allowed me to purchase new supplies to explore this new direction in my work. ❤️

We are seeking submissions from visual artists interested in painting a vertical 4×8 ft mural. SSA will provide a primed sheet of plywood and clear coating (finished works should be able to take a clear protective coat or otherwise withstand the elements), and artists will provide all other materials. Selected artists will receive a $500 honorarium and a 1-year SSA membership. Works will be returned to the artist at the end of the exhibition. Please note: Only artists currently based in the Southern Gulf Islands and Indigenous artists living in the southern Vancouver Island region whose traditional territories include the Southern Gulf Islands are eligible to apply for this opportunity.
