HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY 🇬🇭 Ghana, formerly the Gold Coast, is the first country south of the Sahara to gain Independence on 6th March 1957. The feat also inspired other African countries to fight for Independence. 66 years on, we celebrate the day through these five highlights. On 6 March 1957 Prime Minister Nkrumah spoke to the people of Ghana about their freedom. On that day he exclaimed that, “the African People are capable of managing their own affairs and Ghana, our beloved country, is free forever.” In 1960 Kwame Nkrumah left the office of the Prime Minister to become the President of Ghana. Since then the 6th of March has been enshrined as a public holiday to celebrate Ghana’s independence. It is a public holiday which means people don’t have to work. Even if the 6th of March happens to fall on the weekend, the next working day will be taken off to recognise Independence Day and the achievements of the Ghanaian people. #kwamenkrumah #ghana #ghanawedding #ghanaindependence #ghanaindependenceday #ghanafood #ghanafashion #ghanaculture #ghanaphotography #ghanastyle #ghanamusic #ghananews #ghana🇬🇭 #ghanamusic #afrobeats #hilife #ghanaian #nkonkonsa #ghanaculture #independenceday #accra #accraghana #accraghana🇬🇭 #🇬🇭 #accrawedey #kumerica #adinkra #adinkrarepublic #adinkrasymbols

Nelson Mandela was a social rights activist, politician and philanthropist who became South Africa’s first Black president from 1994 to 1999. After becoming involved in the anti-apartheid movement in his 20s, Mandela joined the African National Congress in 1942. For 20 years, he directed a campaign of peaceful, nonviolent defiance against the South African government and its racist policies. Beginning in 1962, Mandela spent 27 years in prison for political offenses. In 1993, Mandela and South African President F.W. de Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to dismantle the country's apartheid system. For generations to come, Mandela will be a source of inspiration for civil rights activists worldwide. @followers . . . . #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #blackexcellence #blacklivesmatter #blacklove #blackwomen #blackmen #blackcelebration #february #adinkra #adinkrarepublic #ghana #atlanta #southcarolina #blackhistory365 #nelsonmandela #mandela #panafricanism #southafrica

The first African-born Prime Minister of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah was a prominent Pan-African organizer whose radical vision and bold leadership helped lead Ghana to independence in 1957. Nkrumah served as an inspiration to Martin Luther King, who often looked to Nkrumah’s leadership as an example of nonviolent activism. The evolution of Nkrumah’s power in Ghana, however, complicated relations between the two men. Just days after King’s assassination, Nkrumah expressed disagreement with King’s views on nonviolence. Nkrumah was born on 21 September 1909, in the British colony of Nkroful, on the Gold Coast. Although raised in a small fishing village, Nkrumah was educated in the United States. He received both his Bachelor of Arts (1939) and Bachelor of Theology (1942) from Lincoln University and continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received a Masters of Philosophy and a Masters of Education (1942, 1943). While in college, Nkrumah became increasingly active in the Pan-African movement, the African Students Association of America, and the West African Students’ Union. In 1945 Nkrumah played a central role in organizing the Fifth Pan-Africanist Congress. . . . #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #blackexcellence #blacklivesmatter #blacklove #blackwomen #blackmen #blackcelebration #february #adinkra #adinkrarepublic #ghana #atlanta #southcarolina #blackhistory365 #kwamenkrumah #panafricanism

Sankofa (SAHN-koh-fah) – A Twi word from the Akan Tribe of Ghana that loosely translates to, “go back and get it.” Its literal translation comes from the Akan proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosan kofa a yenkyiri,” meaning, “It is not taboo to go back for what you forgot (or left behind).” Sankofa is a phrase that encourages learning from the past to inform the future, reaching back to move forward, and lifting as we climb. #sankofa Sankofa can be shown as 2 Adinkra symbols. Adinkra are visual symbols that were originally printed on cloth, but now can be found on furniture, architecture, sculptures, logos, and more. Adinkra are saturated with meaning, historical and philosophical significance, and serve as a shorthand for communicating deep truths in visual form. The first symbol, and symbol that our program most widely uses, is a mythical bird with its feet firmly planted forward while its head is effortlessly turned backwards to reach an egg. The second version looks more like the conventional symbol for the heart with symmetrical spirals and ornate endings on each side. Wisdom is associated with knowledge, experience, and sensible judgment when it comes to making decisions and taking actions. Creativity involves using imagination and unique, original ideas in order to create something different and new. All this is required when building something as complex as a spider’s web, which is the idea behind this symbol. Since the spider’s web is woven into an intricate pattern with the purpose of trapping tiny insects easily, it encourages the Akans to emulate the creature’s wisdom as well as its creativity in order to achieve their goals. Therefore, the Akans use the symbol as a reminder to think wisely in the complex and difficult journey of life. . . #designedforroyals #royal #buyblack #accra #accraghana🇬🇭 #ghana🇬🇭 #madeinghana🇬🇭 #adinkra #adinkrasymbol #blackownedbusiness #adinkrarepublic #adinkrasocks #fashion #adinkrasymbols #kumasi #ghanawedding #akoben #blackhistory #ghana #accra #kumasi #yearofreturn #beyondthereturn #god #godisgood #akan #adinkrasymbol #accraghana #wisdom #creativity #godisgood #kwakuananse #anase

1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat, and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms. Currently there is not sufficient knowledge on the causes of breast cancer, therefore, early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control. When breast cancer is detected early, and if adequate diagnosis and treatment are available, there is a good chance that breast cancer can be cured. If detected late, however, curative treatment is often no longer an option. The majority of deaths occur in low- and middle-income families, where most women with breast cancer are diagnosed in late stages due mainly to lack of awareness on early detection and barriers to health services. #adinkrarepublic #breastcancerawareness #breastcancer #october #awareness #survivor #overcomer #accra #ghana #unitedstates #newmonth #blessings #blessed #godisgood

The akofena, meaning 'sword of war', is a popular Adinkra symbol featuring two crossed swords and representing heroism, valor and courage. This symbol is present in the heraldic shields of several Akan states and signifies legitimate state authority. According to some sources, akofena swords have been a part of Asante court regalia and used in wars since the 17th century AD. They were held by the traditional warrior groups of the Asante, as they traveled through the rainforests of the state. The sword was light enough to be used with one hand but was held with two hands for powerful strikes. In this context, the sword was known as an ‘akrafena’. The Akofena as a National Symbol In 1723, the akofena was adopted by the emperor-king Asantehene Opoku-Ware I as the City-State’s national symbol. It was carried by the emissaries of the king on state diplomatic missions. In these cases, the meaning of the symbol was embossed on the sheath of the sword, conveying the message of the mission. #akofena #designedforroyals #royal #buyblack #accra #accra #ghana🇬🇭 #ghana🇬🇭 #madeinghana🇬🇭 #adinkra #adinkrasymbol #blackownedbusiness #adinkrarepublic #blackowned #blackownedbusiness #african #mensfashion #westafrican #blackexcellence #socks #socksfetish #socksofinstagram #socksoftheday #sockslover #socksstyle #socksfashion #adinkrasocks

Happy Sunday! Time to reflect and be thankful for a new week. More than just a brand, we educate, promote and empower our communities. Our founder has a vision: To share with the world his rich and deep roots of wisdom by bringing the Adinkra Symbols to the world. Adinkra cloths were traditionally only worn by royalty and spiritual leaders for special occasions. The arrival of the Adinkra in Akan culture, Ghana, West Africa, seems to date as far back as 1817. The Adinkra symbols express various themes that relate to the history, beliefs and philosophy of the Asante. They mostly have rich proverbial meaning since proverbs play an important role in the Asante culture. The use of Proverbs is considered a mark of wisdom. We liked that!
